nokia_tablet_fccNokia’s much rumored and leaked tablet, the Lumia 2520 seems to have passed through the FCC. The tablet has the cellular bands for the three largest carriers in the US (At&t, T-Mobile & Verizon). We’ll almost definitely see this announced in Abu Dhabi come the 22nd of next month, until then theses slightly blurry images will have to suffice.

Report: Blackberry’s Downfall; Many Parallels to Nokia’s

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 11:59 AM PDT

DSC018 71Blackberry is in a very tough spot at the moment, with it’s future extremely doubtful; after a recent buyout offer from another Canadian company. As things dwindle down, more details about how Blackberry got in this mess have come to surface, as detailed in a very long 9 page report by theglobeandmail. Some factors about BB’s decisions parallel Nokia’s own almost exactly and seems to be the same story, from a different angle.

Blackberry, as with Nokia dropped the ball with the iPhone release, at the time BB were one of the largest (if not the largest) market share holder in the US, but similarly to Nokia they dismissed the iPhone’s touch screen as a gimmick, and their ego and self esteem clouded their judgement. What neither company factored in was what a colossal affect the software aspect of Apple (apps), would have on the market thinking that users would always choose Hardware over Software.

But smartphone users were rapidly shifting their focus to software applications, rather than choosing devices based solely on hardware. RIM found it difficult to make the transition,

Once the true threat of Apple was recognized, Verizon wireless (the largest carrier in the US) who were cut out of Apple’s earning due to their exclusivity deal with At&t wanted a hero phone of their own to compete against the iPhone, and gave BB the chance to make it. BB’s response was the BB Storm which as you might guess, wasn’t a huge success.

RIM executives jumped at the chance. At one management meeting, Mr. Balsillie called it RIM's most important strategic opportunity since the launch of its two-way e-mail pager.

The product was the BlackBerry Storm. It was the most complex and ambitious project the company had ever done, but "the technology was cobbled together quickly and wasn't quite ready," said one former senior company insider who was involved in the project.

The product was months late, hitting the market just before U.S. Thanksgiving in 2008. Many customers hated it. The touchscreen, RIM's first, was awkward to manipulate. The product ran on a single processor and was slow and buggy. Mr. Balsillie put on a brave face, declaring the launch to be "an overwhelming success," but sales lagged the iPhone and customer returns were high.

Similarly Nokia even had their own full touch screen device in the pipeline before the iPhone was even released, but dropped the ball and thought it wasn’t what consumers wanted, for fear that it wouldn’t have been accepted. Blackberry faced a similar issue, not knowing if they should embrace the touchscreen phenomenon or hang on to their roots and winning horse, QWERTY phones. Eventually falling behind without making a definitive decision, which was delayed by management multiple times along the way to the store shelves.

The other major parallel between the two is the software aspect, where both had to move on to a more modern system (BB to QNX, and Nokia away from the lagging Symbian onto Meego/Maemo). Blackberry made the decision to rebuild BB10 from the bottom up, but had many obstacles on the way, including poor communication between their BB7 and BB10 teams.

There’s also the decision of both CEO’s (Heins & Elop) to go against the suggestions of their fellow board members, with Elop deciding to go WP against the advice of his board and team, and Heins choosing to go full out with the touch screen Z10 rather than stick to the trusted Qwerty phones.

There are a lot more interesting parallels between the two, and it’s definitely worth a read, so check out the full article at the link below:

BBM for Windows Phone? BlackBerry hints being open to platforms other than iOS and Android

TheMobileIndian reports on the possibility of BBM for Windows Phone.

Gary Klassen, creator of BBM, said:

BBM will not be limited to just Android or iOS. We are open to other platforms also

BlackBerry Messenger was the main reason that folks were still picking up BlackBerries but the cross platform Whatsapp soon saw BBM become less relevant. With the reason to get a BB waning, getting BBM to multiple platforms may at least stem the decline of people who care about BB, and perhaps may even see it grow

Nokia Lumia 920 – £200 on Amazon.co.uk, Back in stock unlocked for £220 with Tesco

Quite a few of you managed to jump onto the Tesco Sale of the 920 for £220 before it went out of stock immediately so hurry quick as Tesco have another batch.

Amazon has the 920 also, for £200 free delivery in UK. This is dispatched via actual Amazon not a third party seller.

My sister upgraded from a 710 to a 920 in yellow due to that Tesco sale.

Thanks Kojo for the tip!

Anssi Vanjoki on Reddit front page

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 04:17 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-09-29 at 12.05.49

This story has hit the front page of reddit again. In Reddit’s “today I learned” subreddit, the top story (pushing to the front page) is how Anssi Vanjoki, whilst a Nokia Executive, was hit with a huge speeding ticket. Given that in Finland, fines are tied to the income of the offender when exceeding the limit by a certain amount (as opposed to a blanket approach where it’s all the same) Vanjoki’s fine was 103,600USD. Something he could afford but also something that would be memorable for him to not do it again.

A Finn explains:

Just as an example from Finland: Last year i was caught on speed camera doing 83 km/h on a 60 km/h stretch and got a little bit over 300€ ticket. My yearly income is a bit over 30k. If you exceed the limit for more than 20 km/h the fine will be based on your salary. Under that, the fine varies from 75€ to 115€.

There is a ticket calculator provided by the police:https://www.poliisi.fi/poliisi/lp/home.nsf/pages/F3BCD1C2A09C374FC225759900338B68?opendocument

Looking deeper into the comments, the original fine was supposedly 12.5 million dollars (possibly a mix up, as others claim that was his income in 1999 :/)! However, an appeal by Vanjoki meant the fine was reduced. Not to the 100k in the title, but to 7K.

We were lucky enough to meet Vanjoki at his last Nokia World. Some people reminisce what Nokia could have been like were it to have remained with a Finnish CEO, and Anssi being prime candidate.

Screen Shot 2013-09-29 at 12.06.06The highest priced speeding ticket was actually awarded in 2003.

The most expensive speeding ticket ever given is believed to be the one given to Jussi Salonoja in Helsinki, Finland, in 2003. Salonoja, the 27-year-old heir to a company in the meat-industry, was fined 170,000 euros for driving 80 km/h in a 40 km/h zone.

But Vanjoki and the Nokia connection may have sounded better.

o2 UK Push Nokia Lumia 1020 as an “out of the ordinary” Business Phone

O2_Blog_Banner_Nokia-1020_13-10339

It seems that o2 UK (part of Telefónica) have been pushing the Nokia Lumia 1020 in many ways, with things like the the exclusive 64GB version only in the UK by o2, and the promo’s in the o2 store, but it seems o2 have gone one step further and are pushing the 1020 towards business users, in what they are describing as “Working out of the ordinary: the Nokia Lumia 1020″.

The article does emphasis the built in office, the amazing camera and more, so have a read for yourself…

Nokia Lumia 1020 Billboard: The most megapixels you can fit into a pair of skinny jeans (California) (+ O2 store 1020 promos)

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 03:29 AM PDT

MNB skinnyjeans

This picture was shared to us from California, Lombard Street. (Cheers anonymous person)

It takes an interesting stance that this camera has 41MP and it’s the most amount of MP you can fit in skinny jeans.

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/07/31/nokia-lumia-1020-in-a-jeans-pocket-with-camera-grip-in-the-pocket/

As someone who has unfortunately fallen for the skinny jeans trend (I blame losing some weight in the leg area) yes, 1020 fits in my jeans fine. BTW, there are “spray on jeans” for men now. I was recommended them yesterday as they didn’t have the regular stretch skinny in my size. They look like man tights. :/ Though  they are oddly comfy and roomy. I have to confess I do kinda already own some super skinny but by accident. They didn’t have any in my size and so I went from a 30 to a 26. Yeah, those don’t get used much. I generally don’t put anything in those pockets cos the outline is seen clearly (even something like a card).

Whilst we’re speaking of physical ads, at the o2 store in preston they had some Nokia Lumia 1020 ads playing. There was the cool video showing the 1020′s camera internals, another video which included quotes on how awesome the 1020 is and possibly something else. It did cycle between Nokia and iPhone but that was about it. I had to wait a few cycles to take this pic as people were standing in front of it.

MNB WP_20130928_14_00_53_Pro

The Phones4U display still wasn’t showing much about the 1020 like the post from last week but they did have a little poster at the bottom. You can’t really notice it.

MNB WP_20130928_14_18_55_Pro

I think once people know that there’s a super awesome camera, with 41mp they get really interested. Last night, whilst getting ID’d, I got stopped by one of the bouncers at the entrance of a club after he saw me take a picture with my 1020. He was intrigued upon finding out this phone had 41MP (to which he oddly asked if it was a Samsung. Nay! Tis a NOKIA!) I got a picture of the other bouncer and showed him the detail to which blew his mind. He grabbed the phone and just played with the zoom, asking his other friend “what’s this?” pointing to a mark on his face “what’s that” pointing to something else on his face which he couldn’t see with his own eyes.

I’m not sure what goes on in the stores, but once people see a demo of how good the 1020 is, they get really interested. Yes, for those interested in apps, and certainly specific apps, you’d have to look more closely whether the 1020 is a fit for them. Sometimes, unfortunately they might not be. But for others where the main apps are covered, then it’s just about usability, user experience and then other differentiating factors (such as having an amazing camera).

BTW, I’m loving the 1020 camera for low light xenon. Awesome snapper for when people MOVE in low light! I loved the 920/925 for most pictures, but the brilliant DUAL LED isn’t enough to freeze in low light for this particular scenario. Plus, I find colours slightly better with xenon.  And it doesn’t look intrusive (aka an actual camera) so it looks great for spontaneous pics (could do with having faster start up times).

The Nokia Lumia 520 is THE Best Selling Windows Device (Phone, PC or Tablet) Ever!

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 11:24 AM PDT

DSC02904The Lumia 520 has been Nokia’s success in the WP market, giving it a nice boost in the US as well as many other regions, and its success story just got a bit cooler. According to Microsoft’s company wide announcement this week, the 520 is the best selling Windows product available crushing the Surface tablet, and even Windows 8. Pretty impressive eh?

Earth VS Air who wins? #Lumia920

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 01:33 AM PDT

When the Lumia 920 first launched, it made sense that its OIS capabilities would be used for capturing alternative sports, Nokia made several videos to show case it too including a lovely parkour one.

However they neither really hit the point, nor were that entertaining to forgive the lack of Lumia screen time.

Today however Nokia released one of my favorite videos of the week, its a little silly competition between a BMX bike and a guy using an Air glide thingy (please remind me of its name in the comments)

BMX

The action is all captured using several Nokia Lumia 920, featuring sine amazing music, some good laughs and a simple story line with a twist “PERFECT”.

I think this the first video I’d brand as an Amazing everyday video. :)

enjoy it guys.

N1 – 13MP Swivel Camera with dual LED, 6 Element lens, 5.9″ display, 3610mAh

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 12:45 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-09-28 at 08.26.33

A while ago something like this would have belonged in our “My Dream Nokia” section (remember those side barrel rotating huge lens with 41mp concepts?). The specs and the name seem Nokia like.

N1, 6 element lens, and swivel camera as seen in the likes of the N90 or 3250 as a couple of examples. But this is neither a concept nor is it a Nokia.

It’s a device from Oppo and it’s real. I thought since it was shared with us by a MNB reader that it’s good to consider this form factor at least for future devices.

It’s the ultimate for selfies and group photos, no since not only do you have the main camera and viewfinder positioned towards you but you also have the dual LEDs there. The camera is said to open in 0.6 seconds but the demo video (using an engineering sample) looks a bit slower (4-5 seconds).

All that of course is for nothing if the camera quality actually sucks. We’ll wait to see if that’s any good. The long term durability of that hinge is a concern. Oppo claims to have tested it for 100,000 movements.

Check out engadget’s hands on post for more details: http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/23/oppo-n1-hands-on-video/

It seems it has a cool touch panel at the back, useful for taking a picture on something so large as this phablet perhaps.

Something else quite interesting is this gesture to start apps thing. At first it looks a bit overdone as you have to pull down a drawing pad and then draw (Say a V) to start the torch. You could just as simply press the homescreen button and press the torch app (should that be your set up). But what’s cool is a bit like the first time you see double tap to unlock, you can do these gestures when the screen is off.

On the processor side, it’s Qualcomm S600 (1.7GHz Quadcore)

Currently only TDS-CDMA for China Mobile only.

Video: Ballmer’s Tearful Goodbye to Microsoft & Employees

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 12:42 AM PDT

Before Microsoft announced their plans to purchase Nokia’s devices and services division, Ballmer announced that he would step down as CEO of Microsoft within the year. Yesterday during a company-wide meeting, he said his final last goodbyes to Microsoft and his employee’s; in a mix of tears, shouts, fist pumps and chest pounding their was a lot of true raw emotion. Enough to have my eye’s getting a little watery too; point is regardless of what we as Nokia fans think/thought of Ballmer, he had a genuine love for his company, and it shows; he loved his employees, and it seems a lot of them loved him back (after all they always got free Xboxes, devices, and laptops :P ). I’m trying to imagine what Elop’s farewell speech would have been like? He probably won’t have one to give, but if he did; would be half as emotional as this? I imagine lots of booing and a couple of rotten tomatoes.

Concept: Exchangeable Type Covers for Windows Phone

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 12:20 AM PDT

6f6c072c0695dcbb33710b47bdcd9325

Here’s a really awesome concept called “Plumage”, it’s basically a Windows Phone QWERTY device, except the keyboard is a type cover similar to the Surface. The cover folds over itself doubling as a case for the phone as well when not in use, and of course the coolest idea of the concept is the fact that the cover is exchangeable, meaning you can switch it out for another cover to fit your needs (Music cover?, Simple Tp keypad if that’s your thing).

Unfortunately this concept means you’ll also lose half your screen real estate, which is kind of a huge trade-off, still the idea is pretty awesome; and the concept phone looks AMAZING.

LeakyLeak: Nokia Asha 502

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 12:04 AM PDT

BVNQjTBCAAAT2hM@evleaks has just posted another image of an upcoming Asha device, the 502. This features that “dual shot” design; colourful polycarbonate encased in a clear shell.

Last week we saw a very similar looking 500 which appeared to have slightly more rounded corners, but short of that was almost identical to this; so perhaps their just a Dual/single sim variant of each other? Or one with 3G and one without? Either way that brings the count of devices to 4/6 for the Abu Dhabi launch (1520,2520,500,502)- ones that we’ve actually seen.

The annoying @WindowsPhone restore process – Fix it please. (oh – Model: NOKIA 909? What does your 1020 say?)

Posted: 27 Sep 2013 02:30 PM PDT

MNB IMG_2329

First up: What does your Nokia Lumia 1020 say in the about bit? Mine says the model is the NOKIA 909. The early name of the 1020. This is possibly because it’s from Nokia and not the retail version.

Secondly, the main brunt of this post, to whinge about the WP backup process.

The backup and restore process in WP has been relatively swift and easy for me, switching from one device to another. Except today. I think having multiple WPs and cancelling the restore process and halting backup may have done something to whatever it is that MS does for saving a backup as transferring contents from my 920 to 1020 did not restore my messages at all. Only up to the point where I cancelled said restore on the 925/1020 when it forced me to log in to download an app. (It restored some random messages from December)

That’s simply not good enough. Here are some niggles I wrote about back in November:

  • Ideally one step backup for everything on the PC/Cloud
  • Ideally back up text messages when you want
  • Restoring tile lay out (Helps to take a picture to remember what it looked like).
  • Restoration of game/app processes not available.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/11/17/how-to-back-up-messagesappspicscontacts-hard-reset-and-restore-process-on-windows-phone-8-nokia-lumia-920-very-nice-d-niggles/

To reiterate, I posted that in November. The niggles that existed then of course still exist now because unfortunately, there is only one being working at the windows phone team and that’s possibly some type of early primate. Clearly if it was a human being, it would be actually doing stuff? No?

Why should I only be able to restore when I first log in? Why should I not have the ability to backup text messages when I want and restore when I want?

Admittedly perhaps people won’t be switching phones as often as someone reviewing them but still, I expect it to work. That’s the whole point of there being a ‘back up’.

The settings restored OK. Most of the app list is there bar possibly some that are no longer in store (though I don’t know how I still have BBC News Mobile, I thought that got removed?) Contacts are always connected to the main account so that’s something I’ve never had an issue with. For pictures/videos, the auto-upload to skydrive has done its thing. I don’t particularly want to put all those pics over to the 1020. I’m gonna start a fresh :p. You can also use Nokia Photo Transfer for macs and the general Windows Explorer for PCs to drag and drop photo folders.

GDR3 rumours mentions the ability to restore backup via WiFi? (is not not done over WiFi already but over mobile data? Oh I do remember not being given the option to restore messages on the 820 when I didn’t have a SIM in it – though the 1020 prior to putting a sim in, it did attempt to restore messages after logging in to download an app. I don’t know, this whole update thing for Windows Phone is beyond annoying.)

TheRegister: New Nokia Devices? Why Not?

Posted: 27 Sep 2013 11:50 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-09-27 at 19.43.09

Quick heads up from TheRegister who talks to Dr Michael Halbherr, EVP Nkoia design who says that whilst Nokia has sold their devices and services business to MS, that doesn’t stop them from building new devices. That’s perhaps why some say MS can’t use the Nokia name for smartphones?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/09/24/new_nokia_devices_whynot

Nokia will still plan and ‘concept’ new devices. However, TheRegister then adds “Just don’t expect to see Nokia making phones again – or at least any time soon.”

I’m not sure if that’s their conclusion or the jist they got from Halbherr.

It would be wrong now to think about this from a phone perspective. With the cloud and the internet-of-things, we’re seeing a convergence of form factors where you do a few things well in a totally seamless way.

We will still surprise people with leading-edge hardware.

What other type of Nokia Devices could they make?

The rest of the article talks about HERE Maps. According to many past stories and discussions in our comment area, the whole NAVTEQ bit of Nokia was said to have been quite a deciding factor to Nokia going against Android  (Nokia didn’t want to let go of their maps).

The other two parts of Nokia include NSN which has been going from strength to strength, and also their ‘Advanced Technologies Group’, the latter being a great generator of intellectual property for licensing new technology.

Cheers viipottaja and jiipee for the tip!

TheNextWeb: Nokia Lumia 1020 vs iPhone 5S vs LG G2 vs Moto X – 1020 BEST Cameraphone out there, competes with standalone cameras

Posted: 27 Sep 2013 04:46 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-09-27 at 12.42.07

TheNextWeb have just compared the Nokia Lumia 1020 against the new iPhone 5S, the LG G2 and Moto X. This is a camera shootout of the flagship devices of each of these respective companies, all of whom boast about how great the camera is in their phone. So the main concern here and in the discussion should be just about imaging.

They think that the 1020 is the best camera phone out there and with ProCam is good enough to compete with standalone cameras.

http://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2013/09/27/smartphone-camera-shootout-lumia-1020-iphone-5s-g2-and-moto-x/#d6a62e_4

  • 1020 – clear leader – photo fanatics should definitely give the Lumia 1020 a try
  • iPhone 5S – trouble in low light but good form factor
  • G2 holds its own but they find the images too harp and flat and wishes LG would focus more to improve the sensor rather than upping MP
  • Moto X was disappointing

Lightning storm? Why not charge your Nokia phone?

Posted: 27 Sep 2013 01:16 AM PDT

Pink

What’s Nokia been up to these days you ask? well they’re harnessing lightning!

Nokia Conversation just published a crazy article about an experiment they’ve been working on with the University of Southampton, they’re harnessing lightning and using it to charge a Nokia Lumia 925!

"We were excited by this challenge presented to us by Nokia," Neil explained. "Using an alternative current, driven by a transformer, over 200,000 volts was sent across a 300mm gap – giving heat and light similar to that of a lightning bolt. The signal was then stepped into a second controlling transformer, allowing us to charge the phone."

What happened next surprised even the scientists, and Neil adds: "We were amazed to see that the Nokia circuitry somehow stabilized the noisy signal, allowing the battery to be charged in only seconds." [Talk about a lightning connecter :D ]

Lumia 925

Still in a world where wireless chargers are still a commodity, don’t expect to be charging your phone with this any time soon,  Neil Palmer a scientist at the University of Southampton explains:

"This discovery proves that the device can be charged with a current that passes through the air, and is a huge step towards understanding a natural power like lightning and harnessing its energy,"

Not only does this experiment speaks volume of the creative circuitry Nokia puts in their phones, it also shows how Nokia aren’t done innovating and their R&D will be able to entertain us for a long time to come.

Enjoy the video which also features some footage out of the Lumia 1020 an electric yellow one. :D

Lumia 1020I love how they managed to get a yellow mount for the 1020

You can also read the full article over at Nokia Conversations

P.S If you live in an area with enough lightning bolts to actually use this technology to charge your phone daily you should move :D

Thanks for reading.

Press Release: NSN paving the way for 5G

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 03:52 PM PDT

Making use of shared spectrum frequencies now a reality on the way to 5G

In a live TD-LTE 4G network trial with a commercial operator and a spectrum-owning local agency, Nokia Solutions and Networks demonstrated that Authorized Shared Access (ASA) is a technology that paves the way for future 5G networks. With dynamic access to underutilized spectrum frequencies, operators will be able to harvest extra capacity to offer unmatched coverage and customer experience for mobile broadband users.

Increasing subscriber demand for faster networks requires innovative approach to spectrum sharing and reducing network congestion. Earlier this year, NSN and CORE+* consortium took a giant leap forward with the worlds' first spectrum sharing trial of ASA on a live 2.3GHz TD-LTE network. The ASA concept allows mobile operators' networks to share frequency bands from other types of incumbent systems, such as government agencies or TV broadcast networks, while guaranteeing quality of service for both. Increasing spectrum is one of the core pillars of NSN's Technology Vision 2020, and the company has again demonstrated it has the technology and expertise to drive the vision forward.

"The benefit of ASA is that it provides both the technology and regulatory framework for sharing spectrum", said Marc Rouanne, executive vice president, Mobile Broadband at NSN. "Our trial showed that operators can get up to 18% extra bandwidth for mobile broadband networks cost effectively. This technology works with existing LTE and TD-LTE networks and does not require specific software for the end-user devices, making it easy to deploy and transfer the benefit directly to the mobile customers."

For the live trial, NSN deployed its network elements in three Finnish cities: commercial Single RAN Flexi MultiRadio 10 Base Stations in Ylivieska, commercial Core Network in Oulu and commercial NetAct network management system in Tampere.

To share your thoughts on the topic, join the discussion with @NSNtweets on Twitter using #mobilebroadband and #LTE.

Unified store planned for Windows Phone and Windows. RT on Phones?

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 02:32 PM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-09-26 at 22.21.58TheVerge reports that Microsoft are planning to have just one store for both Windows and Windows Phone, hopefully signifying the importance of Windows Phone to Microsoft as it gets integrated more towards the main platform.

MS’ Terry Myerson said:

Windows RT was our first ARM tablet. And as phones extend into tablets, expect us to see many more ARM tablets, Windows ARM tablets in the future

Phones extending into tablets. Soon WP8 (via Nokia’s GDR3 phablets) will have the same resolution as the 1080p Surface pro. Would WP remain its own entity or would it eventually blend into RT? That’s one way to make a unified store easier to handle. Or they could go down the Apple route and just scale up phone apps to tablet?

This may come as soon as 8.1 (W8.1/WP8.1), with TheVerge proposing possibilities of Snap View. That’ll be nice, especially for multitasking on Phablets.

Cheers zxv for the tip

LeakyLeak: Nokia Glee (music focused device?)

Quick heads up as I’m posting this whilst on a treadmill.

@evleaks notes something called the Nokia Glee. Due to the show “glee” being about music, there’s a lot of speculation that this device might be music centric.

Engadget: Z1 vs 1020 – no way that the Z1′s camera module can technically match the Lumia 1020 (Spoiler: Nokia wins)

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 11:54 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-09-26 at 19.42.42

Quick comparison in the review of the Xperia Z1 which engadget says their camera section hasn’t been the same since the 1020.

  •  no way that the Z1′s camera module can technically match the Lumia 1020
  • It boils down to the laws of physics: the Z1′s sensor is smaller (1/2.3 of an inch, versus 1/1.5); it has fewer pixels to play with (20.7 million versus 41 million); and it lacks optical image stabilization (OIS).
  • not as perfect as the Lumia shot directly beneath it, which has less noise and slightly better color balance and contrast
  •  Z1 is being put up against the full might of the Lumia’s optical image stabilization, which allows it to keep its shutter open longer and therefore allow more light to hit the sensor.

Screen Shot 2013-09-26 at 19.45.30

Here is where Engadget tries to even things up for the Z1 by disabling the 1020′s OIS. They note that for taking pictures of things that move, you don’t really want to have OIS there to keep the shutter open longer to cause blur. (Alternatively you could then just as easily set the shutter speed to something faster? Or perhaps choose xenon to freeze time? I’ve been throwing things in the air and catching them mid flight with the 1020 haha)

  • Even with OIS disabled, Nokia’s handset takes less noisy action shots in low light
  • the Lumia’s advantage is significant

Day light, things are closer. But that’s the case with phones now, hence the importance of low light photography (and where OIS, bigger sensors, xenon, faster lenses, will give the best versatility).

Engadget aren’t too pleased with video.

  • Regrettably, if shooting video is as big a deal for you as shooting stills, then the Z1 has little to offer beyond other non-OIS Android phones.
  • The lack of image stabilization means that a large portion of its total data rate (2.1 MB/s) is taken up with the artifacts of hand wobble.
  •  The Lumia, meanwhile, captures much richer video because it does away with this wobble and instead deploys its 2.5 MB/s data rate for the correct purpose: carrying actual detail from the scene.

I find my 1020′s OIS at the zoom end to be amazing! Whilst the 808 takes amazing videos, when zoomed in, my hands unstable shakiness would kinda ruin it. The same thing goes when taking zoomed in shots without flash. The 1020 however renders them crisply (as the 925 has been doing with ProCam for my lecture slides.  I can’t wait to test the 1020 in lectures tomorrow afternoon!)

  • Sony has thrown everything it has into the new 20-megapixel camera module, and yet it hasn’t managed to beat Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone
  • he evidence is clear: the Z1 shoots noisier stills than the Lumia 1020 and its video recordings suffer immensely from the lack of optical image stabilization.
  • That potentially compelling reason to buy the Z1 has already evaporated.

It’s great that the 1020 is still ‘winning’ in the camera department here against the famed Honami that’s some claim would easily take its crown (what more against the 808?). Credit where it’s due the Z1 is of course a great phone if you’re a fan of Android, want a good camera but don’t want the bulk and crapugliness of the S4 Zoom. Which btw goes against what some might claim that being bulkier obviously means it should take better photos when the S4 zoom does not against the 1020.

Thanks Zahid for the tip!

AAS: In depth comparison between Nokia N8 and Nokia Lumia 1020! (+Colour Balance in Creative Studio)

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-09-26 at 18.53.56

We’ve seen a quick comparison before between the Nokia N8 and Nokia Lumia 1020.

This time it’s Steve Litchfield’s turn to show us how the long running champion of camera phones (till the 808) fares against the 1020.

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/18448_The_legendary_2010_N8_versus_t.php

I have not yet taken the 1020 on a night out (cue this Friday!) for low light xenon shots but Steve’s comparisons against the N8 seems to put the 1020 ahead. I think, so far, white balance is a bit of an issue. Ali recommended using the auto-fix feature in WP which does help. I’ve found Creative Studio and whacking the colours more to the left in the colour balance option makes the colours look more towards how the N8/808 would capture it (vs the slightly yellow tint).

There are times when the colours do look better on the 1020 and Steve points this out too (e.g. leaves) and oddly the xenon picture has the 1020 being slightly more accurate apparently.

The higher resolution and bigger sensor in the 1020 means it’s getting in a lot more effective detail.

The scores are very close! 65 to the N8 and 67 to the 1020. More of a testament really to the greatness Nokia achieved in the N8 as the 1020 is so widely praised (not just in the tech blogosphere by phone/gadget fans but photo enthusiasts like DPReview!)

As usual, it’s interesting to tot up the scores: Nokia N8: 65, Nokia Lumia 1020: 67.

So a win for the much newer device, though by a comparatively small margin. Don’t take the scores too seriously though, since any result here will depend hugely on the choice of subjects and how often (or rarely) I allowed PureView zoom at capture time. I picked the subjects almost at random but tried to include as wide a variety as possible.

The takeaway here is the answer to the question that most Nokia N8 owners have been asking (at least, those who didn’t already upgrade to the 808 PureView): “My phone is getting old and battered but I want something with a camera that’s as good and yet which is much more modern in terms of OS and ecosystem. Should I be considering the Lumia 1020?”

The answer is a definite ‘yes’ from me. The narrow victory here doesn’t reflect a number of extra camera-related factors which N8 owners will want to also take into account:

  • Nokia Pro Camera has more settings to fiddle with and a far more intuitive UI.
  • Optical Image Stabilisation helps keep the phone still during capture.
  • Terrific OIS-smoothed 1080p video capture.

Provided you’re not addicted to Symbian (in which case run, don’t walk for one of the remaining 808s!), you can also then add in the ever-expanding Windows Phone ecosystem, a far faster device overall, and a feature set which includes almost everything that N8 owners will have been used to.

Asking me to pick between an 808 and a Lumia 1020 is a very tough call. However, much as I love the venerable old N8, I’d pick the Lumia 1020 in a heartbeat.

Creative Studio: Colour Balance sliding to the left.

WP_20130923_21_59_14_Pro WP_20130923_21_59_14_Pro20130923230258

The autofix version looks like this. Note, saving it overwrites the original. A little bit more range – the water fountain is more visible. You could always then change the colour balance again.

WP_20130923_21_59_14_Pro

It doesn’t always cast a yellow tint when xenon is fired. E.g. if there’s some room lighting already, or a bit of cloudy light, the colours (well for skin tones/woods) with xenon fired seem to have less of that yellow tinge. I do have to test this out more though. Things that are already yellow/white/blue/red look wonderfully vibrant though and that splash of xenon makes every detail so, so sharp!

Ideally, we wouldn’t have to adjust any colour balance at all. It would be nice, if in future updates to ProCam that this colour ‘issue’ gets ‘fixed’ or we get some options to change white balance/saturation/vibrancy.

[Non flash colours so far I’ve found don’t really need fixing. But again, I need to play with the 1020 a lot more)

Put down your pitchforks says UnwiredView; No Nokia incompetence or board conspiracy for Elop’s deal?

An interesting read over at Unwired View by Stasys Bielinis (part 2 of how these conclusions came about appears tomorrow). I suggest you read that before commenting. In a related post, we highlighted some comments that tried to go against the grain regarding the anti-Elop bandwagon. One of the links we shared was also another good read from WPC.

This one is another article that attempts to say there isn’t all that drama that we seem to be in. There was neither the incompetence by the Nokia board, nor were they actually attempting to sell the company by hiring Elop.

http://www.unwiredview.com/2013/09/26/enough-with-the-witch-hunt-already-there-was-no-incompetence-or-conspiracy-in-nokia-boards-25m-elop-deal/

There was in fact supposedly more incentive for Elop to do well for the company, rather than what’s previously suggested. He stood to make $55 Million dollars if WP paid off for Nokia apparently. Furthermore, the previous CEO is said to have made between 11-17M euros (note, not even dollars) for his departure.

As previously noted, it seems quite usual practice that CEOs get quite large severance packages (Thorstein Heins could get $55, HP’s Apotheker got $25 for an 11 month stint).

Stasys doesn’t ignore Nokia’s mistakes of the past, one of which he believes is going 100% WP. But as for being grossly incompetent , ill intent, conspiracy to destroy nokia…well we’re told that looking at the public annual Nokia reports indicates otherwise.

Nokia Lumia 625 Review

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 09:26 AM PDT

DSC03556Now that the Lumia 625 is safely on its way back to the Nokia Connects office (huge shout out for the trial), I can share my thoughts on it (I feel like I’m never done with the device till it’s out of my life). Put simply the 625 is a great phone, and it’s possibly the best medium/budget-end phone Nokia have made (yes I said it).

http://youtu.be/XP3S4NdQnVw

It has none of the issues the 520 had in terms of dropped frames while filming or poor build quality, in fact the build quality is equal to that of the 920 or 1020, and the design can parallel that of the 925 if you like flashy colors. The screen although 480p doesn’t have any real issues, the ppi is perfectly acceptable for a budget device in my opinion; and as I mentioned in the video the 625 hides it’s low ppi well. For the full review which I’m too lazy to type up, check out the video below

In case you missed them here are the rest of the 625 review videos (Unboxing, Camera tests, and gaming performance).

Nokia Takes Another Dig at Apple, After Apple Maps Tells Users to Drive Across an Airport Runway

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 05:44 AM PDT

BVFqomVCYAITDMeNokia’s twitter account has pushed out some great digs/cheekiness at their competitors ever now and then, recently taking a dig at the 5C’s colorful copying; which went viral becoming one of the most RTed product tweets ever. Now they’re at it again, earlier today a story hit the news that Apple maps was directing users to drive across an airport runway in fairbanks Alaska, which as you can imagine caused a whole lot of commotion (read more here). So Nokia went ahead and tweeted this (the airport in the image above is the same airport that users drove across):

Maybe they should’ve dropped Tim Cook a mention while they were at it

Thanks for the chuckle Nokia.

Gallery: Incredible #Lumia1020 Images

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 04:26 AM PDT

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been looking at various Lumia 1020 galleries, most likely because I’m super jealous. Two of the best galleries I’ve seen come from David Detko and Richard Dorman. Both have always had some stunning mobile images, and I thought why not bring their efforts to a wider audience. (Click images to see the full flickr page)

Here are a few from David’s Gallery;

Xenon flash and its time freezing abilities never cease to amaze

I love all of David’s close-up photos of the human eye

You can actually see the hairs on the Bees’ backs

No special trickery here but the colouring and clarity is impressive for a standard “out and about” shot

Spiral with the lights and the red colouring makes for a cool effect

Richard’s gallery is more scenic and capturing natural beauty.

Here are a few other images floating around that I like too

Another guy I’ve been following for quite some time is Daniel Cheong. His photo’s are just wow! These are a few he caught on a 1020, but man does he have some amazing stuff captured with DSLRs.
