Expected Specifications of AMD Radeon HD 8000 series – Part 2

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 09:24 PM PST

Earlier I have made a post on the expected specifications of AMD Radeon HD 8000 series cards, which is a pure prediction based on previous releases from AMD. But this time, a Spanish website, Bitdreams reveals a specification sheet of AMD HD 8000 series graphic cards.

HD 8970

We know that HD 7970 has 4.32 billion transistors and 2048 stream processors, which is increased up to 20 % in HD 8970 graphics card. According to the leaked specs, HD 8970 has 5.1 billion and 2560 stream processors. Also ROPs count is increased by 50 %, to 48 ROPs.

Core clock speed is set at 1050 MHz. Effective memory clock is set at 6000MHz.

Mid- Range Cards

Interestingly, the leaked specs sheet show that AMD has concentrated much on lower end graphics cards.

Intel prepares 13W Core i7 Ivy Bridge Processors

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 08:38 PM PST

Intel is preparing a new processor in Ivy Bridge series, especially for notebooks with just 13W TDP. Its model name is Core i7 3689Y.

Like other Ivy Bridge processors, this processor is going to be manufactured on 22nm process.

Features of Core i7 3689Y

  • Dual core
  • Supports Hyper Threading
  • 4MB L3 Cache
  • 1.5 GHz clock speed (up to 2.6 GHz Turbo)

This processor is going to be integrated with the fastest graphics solution from Intel, HD 4000 graphics processor.

Core i7 3689Y supports BGA socket only. So it can be connected to DDR3, DDR3L and DDR3l – RS type memory modules with up to 1600MHz.

15W Intel Haswell has 40ES GT3 Graphics processor

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 08:28 PM PST

Intel is constantly trying to improve its integrated graphics in its processors.

With Sandy Bridge processors, Intel introduced HD 3000 integrated graphics solution, which is just capable of playing Full HD videos and some casual games.

With Ivy Bridge processors, HD 4000 graphics solution was introduced by Intel, which is capable of playing videos up to 4K resolution.

Since AMD failed to create the expected performance from its Bulldozer architecture, Intel has an upper hand against AMD in terms of processor (CPU) performance. But AMD is far ahead of Intel considering integrated graphics performance.

So Intel is constantly headed up in improving their integrated graphics solution. In this situation, it is already known that upcoming Intel Haswell processors will have graphics solutions with better architecture and more number of (ES) Execution Units.

Prior rumours revealed that GT1 and GT2 are the model numbers of integrated graphics in Intel Haswell processors, but now a rumour says that GT3 is the model number of the integrated graphics in higher end Haswell processors and 15W Haswell processors that are to be employed in notebooks.

But remember GT3 is only for high end Haswell processors for Desktops, so lower end Core i3 may not get GT3 graphics solutions.

Pattern of these processors are already sent to manufacturers, to make their products compatible with this graphics solutions.

The exact price of APU is not been revealed by the company. And we need to wait for few more days to get the exact price details about the device.

AMD’s Future Roadmap on FM2 and FM2+ Sockets

Recent News on AMD Trinity APU – A10-5800K

AMD A10-5800K Overclock
Following the launch of Trinity APU for Desktops, different reviewers around the world started conducting experiments in order to find out the method used for overclocking the APU's, A10-5800K and A8-5600K. These APUs integrate both graphic core and processor, under one package in order to improve the total desktop performance.

AMD APU A10-5800K is overclocked to 7.3 GHz

A standard AMD A10-5800K APU has four cores and runs at a clock speed of 3.8GHz and is scalable to 4.2 GHz automatically under Turbo mode. With air cooling A10-5800K had managed to reach 5.1GHz clock frequency and with the superior cooling provided by liquid nitrogen, it was again overclocked to 7.3GHz clock frequency. Also when two cores of A10-5800K were disabled, it reached a clock frequency of 7.3177 GHz. But a stable overclock that had been achieved through air cooling was 4.5 GHz only.

Successor of Trinity will be compatible with socket FM2 and FM2+

AMD has currently adapted a new focussed strategy with its Trinity APUs for desktop computers. These new Trinity APUs are compatible only with FM2 socket based motherboards only. One of the leading web sources, Fudzilla has leaked some rumours about Richland APU. Richland APU is the codename for upcoming APU, Kaveri. Fudzilla revealed that Richland APU will be compatible with the current socket FM2, and also with the future socket FM2+.

But before a few days, in one of the meeting, AMD had mentioned that FM2 would be the last socket before unification of its two sockets: AM3 + and FM2. So the leaked detail from Fudzilla contradicts entirely from the data revealed by AMD. If the leaked data is true, then future FM2 + socket is expected to follow the tradition of AM2+ socket, which was fully compatible with AM2 sockets, besides adding some improvements. So the future FM2+ will surely have a backward compatibility for FM2 socket. At least, for two more generations, AMD APUs will support FM2 socket.

New chipset from AMD, Bolton

Some rumours have also been revealed about the next new chipset by AMD, which will be codenamed as Bolton. It will be an immediate successor to the Hudson chipset from AMD that's been used in A55/A75/A85X. The future chipset, Bolton will come in two variants: Bolton D3 and Bolton D4. The Bolton D3 will be an economic version intended to replace the A55 chipset and the Bolton D4 will act as a new high-end chipset. Both chipsets will be compatible with FM2 and FM2+ motherboard sockets.

AMD Moves in a Focussed Strategy with its Trinity APUs

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 11:10 AM PDT

New Trinity APUs from AMD

Sr. Jose Luis Fernandez, Field Application Engineer at AMD, has unveiled some details about the new AMD Trinity APU for desktop computers. It is presently available for desktops, supporting FM2 socket based motherboards. Jose Luis Fernandez was questioned about the delay of launch of Trinity APUs. He has mentioned that, there are a number of factors that affected the decision. He added that the company had wished to clear the stock of old generation APUs, before giving way to new ones.

Performance of AMD Trinity APUs

AMD Trinity FM2 Platform

Both the new APUs, A10-5800K and A8-5600K run with quad-core processors, aimed at the entry-level and mainstream desktop market. AMD A10-5800K with a default clock frequency of 3.8GHz can run at to 4.2GHz and at the same time, the A8-5600K of 3.6GHz can run at 3.9GHz under Turbo mode. Both these APUs have unlocked multipliers, enabling users to increase the speed of both the CPU and graphics part. AMD is the company first to adapt this new strategy of using APU for desktop computers, which is an integration of both CPU as well as GPU. This kind of scenario is more favourable for entry level and budget desktop computers. Besides going for an entry level graphics card for casual gaming and HD video playback and creation, these APUs are the best replacements. The new HD 7000 series integrated graphics in AMD Trinity APUs, expelled the need for buying a graphic card for extra 120$.

AMD can do more, along with Microsoft

AMD gives great importance to the criteria of integrated graphics and hence with the advent of Windows 8 operating system, which carries out many of its operations using the GPU part, this modern Trinity APU will surely attract more number of users towards it. So we can expect AMD to reach a new peak in sale of Trinity APUs.

Future scope of AMD

These APUs are based on the architecture called Piledriver, which is initially used in all new ultra-thins based on Trinity APU for notebooks. These second-generation APUs will create a pressure to Intel's 22nm Pentium dual core and Core i3 Ivy Bridge processors. AMD officials mentioned that the performance and power-efficiency capabilities of Trinity APUs will be far better than its predecessor, AMD Llano APUs.

Expected Specifications of AMD Radeon HD 8970 Graphic Card

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:26 PM PDT

Leaked Details about AMD HD 8970 GPU

There have been various leaks, this year, about the highly expected AMD HD 8970 from the new AMD Radeon HD 8000 family of graphics processors. The spotted leaks from KitGuru revealed that the Venus cores in AMD HD 8970 will run with 28nm technology, which includes 5 billion transistors for playing game and surfing dodgy videos.

The proposed HD 8000 series graphic cards are
Amd Radeon HD 8990, 8970, 8950, 8930, 8870, 8850, 8830, 8770, 8750 graphic cards specification Table
AMD HD 8000 series’ expected specs
  • Radeon HD 8970 premium
  • Radeon HD 8950
  • Radeon HD 8930
  • Radeon HD 8990, a dual GPU product

Till now, no exact details have been revealed about the release date of AMD HD 8970 from Radeon 8000 series graphic cards. But it is expected that AMD will launch this new series of graphic cards before Nvidia launches its new card. Here we predict some key features of AMD HD 8970 graphic card.

Predicted Specifications of AMD HD 8970 Graphic Card

Radeon HD 8970 specs prediction
AMD HD 8970 Expected Specifications

Core area

hd 8970 has a die size of 410mm2

The core area of AMD graphic card is getting increased gradually. For example

  • The first HD 3870 graphic card had a core area of 192mm2
  • Next HD 4870 graphic card had a core area of 256mm2
  • The first DX11 graphics card, HD 5870 had a core area of 334mm2
  • AMD HD 6000 series card, HD 6970 had a core area of 389mm2
  • But in case of HD 7970, architecture is greatly changed and so the core area is reduced to 365mm2

Now the proposed new AMD HD 8970 graphic card is said to work in TSMC 28nm process with a core area of 410mm2.

Transistors count

hd 8970 has 5.5 billion transistors

The comparison of number of transistors used in various series of AMD graphic card is as follows:

  • HD 3870 graphic card was integrated with 600 million transistors
  • HD 4870 graphic card was integrated with 900 million transistors
  • HD 5870 graphic card was integrated with 2.51 billion transistors
  • HD 6970 graphic card was integrated 2.64 billion transistors
  • HD 7970 graphic card was integrated with 4.31 billion transistors

But the proposed AMD HD 8970 graphic card will be integrated with 5.5 billion transistors.

Stream processor units

hd 8970 has 2560 SPUs

HD 3000, 4000 and 5000 series of graphic cards used VLIW-5 architecture, which is relatively simple compared to the next generation Radeon HD 6000 series graphic card’s VLIW-4 architecture, which has increased the performance and reduced the stream processor units. Then HD 7000 series graphic cards used GCN architecture, which carried 2048 Stream processor units. But the expected new AMD HD 8970 is expected to have 40% increase in performance with 2560 Stream processor units.

Core frequency

HD 8970 will have 1.0 GHz to 1.05 GHz core clock frequency

The core frequency of earlier HD 3870 graphic card was 775MHz. Then AMD has reduced the core frequency of HD 4870 graphic card to 750MHz. In its next generation, HD 5870 and HD 6970 graphic cards, the company has again increased the core frequency to 850MHz and 880MHz.

Actually, AMD had used 28nm process in HD 7970 card with the core frequency of 1GHz, but at beginning, AMD launched HD 7970 with 925MHz core frequency only, and later after NVIDIA has launched GTX 680 card, AMD has upgraded the frequency to 1GHz. So it is expected that its proposed AMD HD 8970 graphic card will have a core frequency of 1.0-1.05GHz in the beginning.

Texture and ROP units

Texture units got doubled from one generation to another. For example, it was only 80 in HD 5870 and it was increased to 128 in HD 7970. So AMD HD 8970 is expected to have 160 Texture units. Since the change in ROP units is not so obvious, we cannot predict some exact value. DX10 had 16 units, whereas DX11 had 32 units and hence the expected AMD HD 8970 will have something around 48 units.

Memory size of AMD HD 8970

In recent years the memory capacity ranges from 1GB to 3GB, so the new AMD HD 8970 series is expected to have the maximum memory capacity.

Memory bandwidth

Bandwidth is mainly linked with memory frequency, bandwidth, and memory type. Though HD 3870 used GDDR4 and HD 4870 used GDDR5, the memory bandwidth remained almost same and it was almost equal to 264GB / s. But the new AMD HD 8970 will have a greater change in memory type and the bandwidth, which is expected to reach 312GB / s.

Equivalent memory frequency

The memory frequency of AMD HD 8970 may reach 6500MHz or even higher than NVIDIA GTX 680, which has 6008MHz. But NVIDIA GK110 core uses 384bit memory, so it is still unknown what AMD will do to compete high with its rival, Nvidia.

TDP power

AMD has reached the TDP of 250W in its existing HD 6970 graphic card and hence the TDP of AMD HD 8970 is likely to reach 280W

Expected price of AMD HD 8970

The users generally have a feel that AMD graphic card is cost-effective. The expected pricing of various series of graphic card are as follows:

  • The earlier generation HD 3870 cost $ 249 only
  • The next generation HD 4870 cost $ 299 only
  • The cost rose to $ 379 in HD 6970 compared to $ 369 of HD 5970
  • The cost of HD 7970 was suddenly increased to $ 549

So it is expected that AMD HD 8970 will maintain the high price of $ 549.

AMD Piledriver Processors Specifications Officially Confirmed

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 12:42 PM PDT

List of new AMD processors with Piledriver modules

Next generation AMD FX processors and desktop version of AMD Trinity APUs have been talked about for a long time. AMD's next flagship model will be 'FX-8350'. It is designed on 'Piledriver' or second generation 'Bulldozer' architecture. Not only that, FX-8350 will be clocked at 4 GHz clock frequency or even higher (Turbo). This has been known from the leaked, official AMD document.

AMD Vishera and Trinity APUs for desktop platforms specifications officially confirmed

The document is entitled “2012 Consumer Platform Quick Reference Guide for Desktops". In this quick reference guide, AMD cited the upcoming Piledriver based FX processors, desktop Trinity APU models and their number of cores, frequency, and the TDP specifications.

AMD Vishera (Piledriver CPU) Processor Specifications

This time, unlike Bulldozer release, AMD is going let out only 3 Vishera processors. They are FX-8350, FX-6300 and FX-4320. AMD's flagship, FX-8350 will have a clock frequency of 4.0GHz with a Turbo speed up to 4.2GHz. It will have 8-cores i.e. four Piledriver modules. Each module has 2 cores. The TDP of this processor is mentioned as 125W. The six-core model, FX-6300 has a clock frequency of 3.5GHz; under Turbo Boost it can go up to 4.1GHz. It has a TDP of 95W. Finally, it is the quad-core FX-4320. It is clocked at 4.0GHz by default; under Turbo Boost it can go up to 4.2GHz and the TDP is same as 95W. These processors do not have an integrated graphics like AMD Trinity APUs.

Specifications of AMD Trinity APUs for Desktops

Till date A10-5800, A10-5800K were rumoured to be the flagship model in Trinity APU desktop range, but now they are left out. The official list includes A10-5700 as the top model. Let us see the specifications of Trinity desktop APUs.

AMD A10-5700 Accelerated Processor comes with 4 cores clocked at 3.4 GHz by default, which can be boosted up to 4.0 GHz through Turbo Boost technology. It has an integrated AMD Radeon HD 7660D Discrete class graphics with 384 Radeon cores. In terms of graphics performance, AMD Trinity desktop processors can easily take out Intel Core i7 3rd generation processors. But regarding the CPU performance, until we see the actual benchmarks, we cannot assure about it. Last time, the expectation from AMD Bulldozer architecture was seriously high, but they failed to meet the expectations. AMD had already said that there will be 10-15% improvement in performance per core from Bulldozer to Piledriver, but we have to wait for the benchmarks to get out, to see the actual performance of Piledriver architecture. In any means don't expect some miracle to happen.

AMD A6-5300 and A6-5400 are dual core Trinity desktop APUs. They will play some serious game against Intel in the entry level segments. Users, who are on tight budget and wish to build a basic gaming or multimedia pc, can opt for these two dual core processors. AMD A10-5500 APU is a quad core processor with 256 Radeon cores and clocked at 3.2 GHz by default. All the AMD Trinity APUs for desktop platform has 65W TDP, even the most entry level E2-1800 APU clocked at 1.7 GHz. I guess, more AMD Trinity APUs may be added later to this line-up. But it's widely said that AMD will release 3 Vishera processors only.

AMD Athlon II with FM2 Socket from Trinity Platform Leaked

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 12:27 PM PDT

AMD introduced the FM1 socket based Athlon II X4 631/641 from AMD Llano platform and they do not belong to the APU products, because they do not have integrated graphics core in them. It is said that in October 2012, the desktop version of the AMD Trinity APUs, based on FM2 Socket interface, will be launched. Now the scenario is that it won't be just Trinity APUs but also Athlon II desktop processors based on AMD Trinity APU platform but without the integrated graphics core.
These AMD Trinity based Athlon II desktop processors will use the same FM2 socket interface and are just ordinary quad-core processors, as there is no integrated graphics core. But they will use the same Trinity APU architecture. The specific models of upcoming Athlon II X4 processors will be
  1. Athlon II X4 730
  2. Athlon II X4 740
  3. Athlon II X4 750K
All the three processors are equipped with 4MB of L2 cache, clocked at 2.8GHz, 3.2GHz and 3.4GHz respectively. Athlon II X4 730 and Athlon II X4 740 will have a TDP of 65W with locked multipliers. Athlon II X4 750K will come with unlocked multiplier and a TDP of 100W.
At present we are unable to determine the exact release date of these three processors. But, taking into account, the desktop version of Trinity APUs, these Athlon II processors cannot be expected to be released before October 2012, the release date of AMD Trinity APUs. So we should wait until next year, 2013 for the release of the Athlon II processors.
If AMD release these processors anywhere near February with a more economical price, then computer users, who want to build an entry level rig and who cannot afford to get Core i3 processors will opt for this. If AMD postpones the release till April 2013, then Athlon II will find no market aginst Intel Haswell processor.

FM2 Socket interface of AMD Trinity processors

Moreover AMD Trinity processors will use FM2 Socket interface, which is not backward compatible with existing FM1 Socket interface. Although A75/A55 Chipsets can support AMD Trinity APU, FM1 Socket won’t support them. So the new FM2 socket motherboards should be purchased to use AMD Trinity APUs. In addition AMD has introduced new FM2 Socket chipsets, such as A85 Chipset.

AMD Piledriver is backward compatible with AM3+ Socket

In addition, an upgraded version of Bulldozer processors, AMD Piledriver will also debut in October 2012, which is compatible with existing AM3 + Socket interface of AMD BulldozerRegarding AMD Piledriver AM3+ Socket interface, existing 990FX/990X/970 Chipsets based motherboards will be completely compatible with AMD Vishera (Piledriver modules based) processors. But they may need a BIOS update to support any newer features that AMD Piledriver may bring in.

AMD Memory modules road map 2012

AMD Memory Profile – AMP

The surprise doesn’t ends here, AMD brings us another one too. Memory vendors have launched “AMD MEMORY PROFILE” technology, referred to as the AMP. In fact, something similar to Intel’s XMP memory, AMP has a default set of optimized timing for the BIOS to read the RAM.

AMP Boot sequence – AMD Memory Profile

There are three series of Patriot Memory Products. They are Value, Enteratinment, and Perfomance series Patriot Memory products.
