I am not a huge music fan (only one mix on Nokia Mix Radio) to the extent that I would pay a subscription to any service and that is what is keeping me from investing in Beats Music beyond the 3 month trial that AT&T users get. Even with that, I will download it and give it a go as Beats could have totally overlooked the Windows Phone platform leaving us with another sad tale of apps only being for iOS and Android.

Head on over to the WP Store via the download link below to try out Beats Music. Do we have any Beats fans here? Do you have their brand of products or any particular experience with the company?

Have a great day,

50 million Windows Phone users at the end of 2013?

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 11:39 AM PST

Screen Shot 2014-01-30 at 19.38.46

Extracted from data from Adduplex, there may have been as much as 50 million WP users in the world by the end of 2013. It’s a relatively big number for WP. That might be Nokia’s old smartphone numbers in a couple of quarters (and a fraction of Android/iOS) but nothing to scoff at. Definitely a big enough market now for developers to consider. BlackBerry have been rather proud of their 70 odd million users (most on the old BB OS). Adduplex estimates around 38 million being WP8. 12M being WP7. Most, being pretty much Nokia.

Adduplex and Paul Thurott explain that, as Belfiore mentioned, despite the lower lumia sales than the previous quarter, WP activations have apparently been consistent.

in his own blog post,AdDuplex’s Alan Mendelevich provided the same theory I did above to explain how Nokia’s sales numbers and Windows Phone activations are in fact perfectly consistent. And he has usage data to back that up

UPDATE: The wait is over!!! Lumia Black and Windows Phone GDR3 are now available for the Nokia Lumia 920 AND 820 on AT&T

Nokia-Lumia-920-and-Lumia-820

Dear MNB Readers and AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 AND Lumia 820owners!

Lumia Black and GDR3 is now available for the AT&T branded Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820!!!

From Nokia Conversations (I added additional Windows Store links for the apps):

The Lumia Black update combines a host of new features, improvements in imaging, new apps and app updates from Microsoft and Nokia to make your Lumia smartphone experience even better. So what can you look forward to, once Lumia Black is installed?

App Folder. This brand new feature makes your Lumia experience even more fluid by giving you an option to further personalize and organize your Start screen. With App folders you can group similar apps and settings into one folder, a tile, on your Start screen.

Nokia Glance screen 2.0. Helps you keep track of information in real-time, making all your most important notifications including: phone, messages, email, outlook, calendar, or any apps that use notifications such as Twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp, or games; always visible at a glance on your screen. It saves you time and energy.

Bluetooth LE. Will now be enabled across the full Windows Phone 8 Lumia range for compatible gadgets like the Adidas MiCoach accessories.

Nokia Refocus. The amazing Nokia Refocus comes to all Windows Phone 8 Lumia smartphones with 1GB of RAM and upwards. This app has to be seen to be believed..

Nokia Beamer. Sharing what's on your phone is easier than ever with Nokia Beamer. No longer restricted to just photos, you can now beam documents, presentations, anything you like, to any HTML5-enabled screen by simply scanning a QR code on the screen. It's coming to all of the phones with 1GB RAM upwards.

Nokia Storyteller. This app debuted on the new Nokia Lumia 1520 and Lumia 2520 late last year. Now the experience comes to other Lumia smartphones. The app arranges your photos for you, by date and by place, making it easier to tell the stories behind your pictures, and give extra context through the close integration of interactive maps.

Nokia Camera. Combines Nokia Pro Camera and Smart Camera to simplify the photo-taking experience, and ensure you get the perfect shot every time. The app has been available for Lumia PureView smartphones since last year, but it's now coming to the rest of the WP8 Lumia range.

The latest Nokia Camera update also brings raw DNG support for Lumia 1020 owners – something that's already available for Lumia 1520. The DNG format gives you access to pure and untouched visual information, allowing you to do more and be more creative with your images. If you are an enthusiast or professional photographer, now you can use your professional workflow with your smartphone images.

Latest generation of imaging algorithms. The Lumia Black update further improves the image quality, especially in Lumia 1020. Among others, the improvements include a new oversampling algorithm, making your images more natural looking with reduced noise, while ensuring your photos remain wonderfully sharp.

The Lumia Black update also brings a series of enhancements from Microsoft to Nokia Lumia smartphones. These include safe driving mode – which cuts out unnecessary distractions when you're on the road; customised ringtones for each contact. You can now also close apps within the in multitasking view and lock the screen rotation if you wish.

"Nokia Lumia Black updates the imaging experiences on your Lumia and makes using the Windows Phone even more fluid. New App Folders and the ability to close apps in multitasker are my personal favourites. I also encourage everyone to try out the Nokia Refocus app that introduces a whole new dimension to photography," says Samuli Hänninen, vice president of software program management for Nokia's Smart Devices business.

To check to see if your device can be updated, go to:

  • Settings
  • Phone update
  • Check for update

It is great to see AT&T get the Lumia Black update out so quickly compared to the looooooooonnnnnnnggggggg wait for the Amber update for the Lumia 920.

Sam from Windows Phone Central has updated their original article stating that the AT&T Lumia 820 Lumia Black and GDR3 update is available as well.

Update: Our friends at Nokia Care (US) tweeted out that the Lumia 820 on AT&T is also getting the Lumia Black update! Enjoy

What’s your favorite feature of Nokia Lumia Black/GDR3 feature? What do you think of AT&T’s update frequency as of the last few months? Sound off in the comments section below, even if you have Lumia Black and GDR3 on a different device or carrier.

@Nokia Lumia 1520 first impressions of the flagship @windowsphone phablet

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 10:18 AM PST

1520IMG_2745

The Nokia Lumia 1520 arrived on my door last Friday. I kept the package hidden away until Saturday evening as I knew I’d get distracted with the 1520 all weekend if I opened it. Got to keep uni/education/studying in balance peeps :p.

Anyway, so I’ve had it roughly since Sunday. About 5 days. What do I think of it?

I love it!

Some reasons why I love it. Not really in any particular order.

1) The big 6″ 1080p display.

It’s quite glorious to look at. Bright, crisp and so much information on the screen. I half keep getting annoyed at sites that will only view on the mobile version. I want to see moooar!

Reading Kindle, news apps or PDF textbooks has never been so good.

Usability of the big screen hasn’t been an issue. In fact, typing in portrait has, unexpectedly, been even more comfortable.

1520IMG_2766

2) The design.

It’s quite a stand out design and definitely whiplash inducing sleekness to it. It’s like a bigger, more refined 925. The size shocks some (those used to piddly little blackberrys :p) whilst it fascinates some others. “That’s a phone, it’s more like a tablet”, is the response of those who have never heard of the word phablet and thinks it’s something I’ve just made up (they’ve been around for a while, non-geek peeps! It’s like when I got told about Nokia cameras being surprisingly good in comparison to iPhones. Erm. They’ve been insanely awesome before, during and after iPhones)

3) WP8 tweaks for the big screen.

There aren’t as many optimisations to the bigger, higher resolution screens but it’s definitely there and much better than simply increasing the size of everything.

  • In emails/messages you see more text per line
  • In mails menu you see a more of the preview of the message
  • More albums in view (triple column vs 2)
  • More items visible in menus

4) Triple column homescreen

This is really part of 3) but the homescreen is such a big aspect of what you interact with and the identity of WP. Whilst it seems so trivial that there’s an extra column for the big square (so 6 mini columns in total) it really does change how my homescreen looks.

It’s so much more dynamic. More, larger active tiles visible at ones, or much more mini tiles. But of course you have the option to have as much or as little on your homescreen at all.

I’ve found I tend to scroll a lot less since everything is pretty much visible on the first part of the homescreen. I really wish an update in future would mean triple column for smaller displays (heck even the 92x range/1020).

5) Battery Life

Man, this thing is a beast in terms of battery life. The first few days of a new smartphone’s life is usually the worst for me because I’m using it heavily to get to know it. It lives up to Nokia’s claims and GSMArena’s findings. At least 14 apps providing toast notifications, lots of active tiles.

6) Speedy

WP is consistently speedy from the entry level hardware to their flagships. But, like the other reviews have said, there’s just something extra in opening apps and processing that is most appreciated.

7) Closing tasks.

It’s a small change that a lot are welcoming. Purists of WP say it isn’t needed since WP is meant to manage the tasks preemptively. But I like that added sense of control. Perhaps it would be nice to have flick close gestures like N9/W8?

8) The Camera

I looove this camera. Perhaps it’s partly because the viewfinder is so big and clear but also because Nokia Camera is much more responsive. Quicker to start, quicker to process, quicker shot between shot. This is due to smaller files to process (20mp vs 41mp) and the faster processor.

  • The colours look better than my 1020. What I see in the viewfinder is pretty much what I see in the gallery. This may also be partly to do with the screen having less of a yellow tone on top of the 1020 not yet being on black (amber has more yellow tones).
  • Much closer Macro. The 1020 has to be a quite a bit further than, say the 925 on close up subjects. A bit like the 808 PureView. The 808 compensates by having all that zoom. The 1520 is able to get super close, so I get more versatility in that sense for framing close up shots. Plus there’s still a bit of zoom in that 20mp.
  • The flash is surprisingly quite good. Just like Steve Litchfield’s findings. I need more time on this though.
  • Video is nice and stable, like previous generations. This also needs a bit more time to test.

9. The MicroSD slot

Finally. MicroSD slot on a flagship. 32GB internal is great but 64GB means I don’t have to keep an eye on remaining memory as often.

10. Wireless charging built in

Slim, yet the wireless charging is built in. The 1020/925 omitted inbuilt wireless charging but had it as an optional accessory.

Dislikes:

1) The screen seems awfully easy to have microscratches. Now, not even considering the previous post, the 1520 was picking up a lot of fine scratches on the oleophobic layer from being in a fur lined pocket. I recall some mentioned this happen with the 925. I didn’t experience this until some months down the line with the 925 but the 1520 got these fine scratches (you’ll only see with the screen off and reflecting against some light) fairly quickly.

2) Nano SIM.

Not a big issue. It just made things slightly more inconvenient to switch to the 1520 immediately.

3) Several non 1520 specific/more MS/WP related things.

The usual WP8 complaints, plus requests to make MS office actually usable?

4) Glossy back is a bit slippery

Well…

Overall:

I love the Nokia Lumia 1520. I didn’t think I’d like it this much. Especially after the 1020 camera has spoilt me so much. I thought I couldn’t escape having PureView and Xenon

But the camera is more than good enough at the moment. I’m ready to have it as my main device. I think that says a lot. When the 925 arrived, I still kept using the 920 as my main device.

Setting up the 1520 seemed so much easier this time around. Signing in to my Microsoft account brought back my contacts, messages and settings as it was on the 1020. Both 1020 and 1520 routinely sync so that my texts are both visible on both devices. Perhaps others might not like that but I found that helpful.

Ask.FM Comes to WP Via Unofficial Client

Ask.Fm is a nifty little site that allows you to create a profile and receive completely pointless questions from your friends or from complete strangers (anonymously); the app is pretty popular amongst the younger crowds, especially when trying to find out if your crush has feelings towards you. Until now there isn’t an official app for WP; but thankfully an unofficial client has just graced the store, with some pretty sweet functionality. The app allows you to browse your questions, answered questions as well as ask questions to other users (and view your friend’s answers). If you’re an Ask user you’re probably gonna want to grab this from the link below:

Nokia Lumia Across Egypt

@Nokia Lumia 1520 cracked screen :(

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 04:49 AM PST

1520WP_20140130_12_13_01_Pro

Absolutely gutted. My 1020 has survived greater falls, but perhaps it was just unlucky this time with the 1520. Sitting on the bus, the 1520 slid out of my pocket onto the floor. I thought it picked up some dust on the screen but it turned out to have cracked!

The screen was initially still usable but the BING button is having some spasms and so I can’t do anything without the BING button being pressed straight after.

I’ve contacted/visited some repair places but none have 1520 screens at the moment.

I actually just ordered a wallet case (I like to keep my phone and cards together as then they’re all in one place) which would possibly help reduce the little micro scratches that the 1520 had been obtaining from simply being in a pocket.

The polycarbonate is fine. The impact was low, kinda like fragility fracture in an osteoporotic individual.

That’s a shame really as I’ve just picked up a new Three SIM.
1520WP_20140130_12_13_14_Pro

It’s somewhat less visible with the screen on. 1520WP_20140130_12_13_31_Pro

Clearly FAKE. No sinkhole was produced when this fell.

Google sells Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for 2.91B USD

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 04:09 PM PST

moto

A surprise move indeed. Google has sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for 2.91 billion USD. Lenovo was previously rumoured to be buying Nokia. Turns out, they were after another old giant.

Google was said to have picked up Moto (12B USD) for the patents to protect Android. It was initially feared that Google was going to give preferential to Moto treatment now it owns its own phone manufacturer. Whilst there were some privileges, that wasn’t always the case with Moto devices often not launching with the latest build that was available for Nexus and other Droids.

Lenovo isn’t just getting the phone business, but about 2000 Moto patents. Google also retains the rest.

We believe that Motorola will be better served by Lenovo – says Google.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25956284

Perhaps we might see MS sell off Nokia D&S once Nokia D&S manages to serve its purpose for them? (or not? Motorola unit has been costing Google a fair bit with their losses)

Larry Page says this does not signal a shift to Google’s hardware efforts.

What does it mean for Lenovo’s Android/Windows efforts?

Nokia’s OIS available for other OEMs as ST Microelectronics exclusivity ends

Lumia 920 OIS. Image Credit: The Verge

Lumia 920 OIS.

When Nokia introduced Optical Image Stabilisation to smartphones (920), it changed how mobile photography was perceived. Low light became another battle ground. Who could do it better? Phones had become quite similar in daylight (only a few shining through, e.g. Nokia). In low light without flash, Nokia’s PureView Phase 2 was a clear winner.

Nokia has been famous for its optical image stabilization on smartphone cameras since the Lumia 920. We've tested it against every other smartphone you can think of, and there's no denying that Nokia is superior.

http://pocketnow.com/2014/01/29/nokias-ois-tech-available-to-others?

With flash, the xenon equipped N8/808 had previously shown the power of a real flash. The 1020 had both OIS (different ball-bearing based one), PureView phase 1 41MP oversampling and PureView phase 2 OIS.

Whilst others have made attempts at also adding stabilisation (digital or optical), none were reaching what Nokia could do.

Recent reports suggest that other OEMs may now utilise Nokia’s OIS as Nokia’s exclusivity deal with the chip maker that contained the OIS has finished.

I wonder what Nokia’s Juha thinks? Knowing his passion for imaging at Nokia, this will spur more improvement as challenges of the past have driven tons of exciting innovations in Nokia cameras.

Video: How to Insert the Nano SIM into the Lumia 1520 (and Micro SD Card)

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 10:43 AM PST

DSC04859In the past I’ve found that these tutorial guides on how to insert the SIM into Lumia’s or simply, how to remove the back cover to be wildly popular on Youtube; so here’s a quick one showing how to do just that with the Lumia 1520.

http://youtu.be/Rq6nmUuLe30

The Lumia 1520 is actually the first Nokia ever to use a Nano sim (and one of only a handful of other phones to use it, besides the iPhone I believe only one or two other phones have adopted Nano so far- Moto X I think?); and it’s actually a lot more difficult to cut your Sim into a Nano sim than it is to make a Micro sim, so word of advice, don’t waste your time as you’ll probably end up with a ruined sim and a wasted hour of your life (I cut my SIM fine, and even grinded it down since Nano sims are also thinner than normal Micro sims, however it seems I cracked a connector in the Sim’s microchip while cutting so I had to get a new one).

Poll: What size memory card do you use in your main phone?

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 09:32 AM PST

Memory cards. Nokia fans have been taking advantage of them for a long time, and it was something to differentiate against the iPhone in the early days of ‘smartphones for average Joe’.

The 6600 was one of the first mobiles with expandable memory. I sure loved filling up my MMC card on my 7610 with ‘ebaumworld’ videos :/ and super compressed films to watch on smartmovie.

1520WP_20140129_16_05_37_Pro

The likes of the N9, early WP and the 92x range were unfortunately missing this feature too. For most, it’s not an issue. The N9 in some markets had a 64GB version. As does the 1020. But for others, being able to add more memory later should they want to is a must. Shooters like the 1020 should have joined the likes of the N8/808 with expandable memory.

Fortunately the 1520 has one (as does 1320, 520, 620, 720, 820 etc. Just not the 920/925/1020). Nokia camera eats quite a bit of storage on the 1020. Quite a bit less so on the 1520 but still nice to have more space for apps (especially those big games with some requiring 3GB+ just to install) and other space for pictures, videos and music.

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 16.49.27

Whilst the big name suggests it might be ‘better’ in all aspects, including camera in comparison to the 9xx range, the 1320 sports a standard ‘Lumia’ 5MP camera. Not PureView, No OIS etc.

But it’s decent. AF appears quick and accurate. Sound is not compromised (HAAC mics in all Lumias).

Gogi Rana

The description has a link to a 1320 review.  I guess that should be the main bit of this post but the video is what’s new to me.

If you love the windows phone OS and don't have any issue with the size, the Nokia Lumia 1320 could be the perfect companion. It is loaded with powerful hardware capable of playing many high end games. The screen is big (6 inches) and the camera quality is very good plus you can watch and record full HD videos. It is an excellent device for reading, watching movies and browsing.

Accessories: Nokia Lumia 1520 with 64GB Sandisk MicroSD XC Class 10

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 08:44 AM PST

1520WP_20140129_16_19_24_Pro

This is the first time I’ve actually gone all the way up to 64GB on a memory card before. I usually just stick with 32GB (in 820) and in my 60D.

With the 1520, the first of Nokia’s Lumia ‘FLAGSHIPS’ to have a MicroSD, I wanted to shove in some more memory on top of that 32GB. 32GB worked well on my 920 but less so on the 1020 due to the super large files, I occasionally had to reduce the number of pictures I had. Nokia Camera and the likes of Smart Camera do store much more than the 5MP shot that you view on the phone.

This should also hopefully mean I can make more use of Nokia Storyteller, now that I don’t have to remove pictures from the phone too often due to memory constraints.

This came in Amazon Frustration Free packaging. Cheaper if you go down that route. Here’s the amazon blurb.

1520WP_20140129_16_20_23_Pro

1520WP_20140129_16_00_48_Pro

Very small card.
1520WP_20140129_16_05_37_Pro

It slots into the tray of the 1520. No need to turn the phone out or remove batteries. My SIM tray for the nano sim is still empty even though I did receive my SIM pack in the house yesterday. It was unfortunately misplaced. I’m yet to see a nano-SIM.

The N8 is still around in case any MicroSD card needs saving.

http://mynokiablog.com/2010/11/16/n8-saves-the-day-formats-josh-topolskys-fried-memory-card/

1520WP_20140129_16_06_51_Pro

When you pop it in, the card is instantly recognised. It just asks you if you wish to store NEW pictures, music and videos to the card. I don’t know if it needs formatting. I certainly don’t know how to do it from the phone if I needed to do that.wp_ss_20140129_0003

And then, 90GB memory total.

1520IMG_2800

This card comes with an adapter to use in a full size SD slot. I’m not quite sure what the read/write speeds are but they are hopefully more than adequate being Class 10 standard.

I still remember one of the first memory expansions I got.  I think it was a eMMC card for my 7610. 128/256MB. And then my parents got me a 512MB card. So much memory! (1GB was the max support I believe).

The only real WP8.1 image so far, says Tom Warren

SavedPicture-2014129124930.pngWith the flurry of supposed images of WP8.1, Tom Warren has tweeted to say that the only one that has been real is the blurry notification centre settings that we saw some time ago.

It did look odd at the time due to it appearing to be a screenshot and then the blur purposely added. Tom also adds that it might be just an early version of the settings.

Black update for Lumia 520/720 brings double tap to wake

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 02:42 PM PST

I loved the Nokia N9, it was a device with so many experimental UI innovations that along with WebOS shaped the new smartphone UI experience across all operating systems.

(you should know that the main guy behind WebOS is actually the guy who led the team who made the Nokia N9)

Skärmavbild-2011-10-18-kl.-14.28.38

Pictured Nokia N9 with a double tap to wake joke :).

See before the Nokia N9 I would hold my Nokia N8 and press the home button and notice how uncomfortable it is to press something physical and then switch to the air like navigation of a capacitive touch screen.
Luckily the Nokia N9 not only solved this problem by removing home buttons but even introduced a feature that will probably live for ever. (as more OEMs are “knocking” it off :D.)

User feedback convinced Nokia to reintroduced this feature again both on its 5xx Asha line and on select Lumia phones later on via the amber update.

Lumia_625_tap

Sadly low-end Lumias didn’t get a piece of the action that is up until Nokia Black update which added “double tap to wake” to even more Lumias including the Lumia 625 which got the feature to the surprise of many but today as the rollout for Black update started we are glad to report the “double tap to wake” feature now made it to the Lumia 520 and the Lumia 720 too.

Nokia-Lumia-720-520

This feature will give the Lumia 520 new found bragging rights, it already have super sensitive touch which is only found on top Samsung models (and few other flagships), now they’ll have double tap to wake too which is only available on top LG models too and is starkly absent from any Samsung.

So tell us did you get the Black update for your Lumias? are you enjoying the double tap to wake too? Shout off about your experiences in the comments bellow.

Have a good day and happy updating.

YELLOW Nokia Lumia 1520 Unboxing Video & Gallery

Although Jay beat me to posting an unboxing of the Lumia 1520, here’s my video and gallery of the gorgeous yellow Lumia 1520 unboxed. It seems that me and Jay have switched sides however, as he was the face of #TeamYellow while I was all for #TeamRed when it came to the 920; but I think the matte yellow finish on the 1520 is irresistible (much nicer than the glossy finishes.. just look at the 920 in the pics below to see why).

Which do you guys think looks better? The Lumia 152 in red or yellow? or perhaps you’re more partial to the White or Black?

In terms of size, true the 6″ 1520 isn’t for everyone, but the larger screen size and higher resolution is killer; look at the gallery for example, you can see almost 3X the amount of albums in the same screen than you would on any other phone, same goes for the start screen of course.

Weight wise at around 200 Grams it’s not the lightest phone in the world, but it is certainly amongst the lighter phablets out there, and the weight distribution is quite nice; so if you’re worried about that, don’t be.

WP8.1 Blue, Release to Manufacturers March, Devs – April, Users May

This was just tweeted by Nawzil8. Tom Warren from TheVerge confirms that the source is from Mary Jo Foley. Is this update wise? As Nokia already has 8.1 devices appearing in February according to rumours.

https://twitter.com/Nawzil8/status/428150748145549312

So much is expected of WP8.1. Nokia’s done what they can and more with Amber and Black. It feels like Microsoft has slacked so much. We better see some significant improvements in 8.1.

Windows Phone 8.1 won’t be available to consumers until later this April…

…Windows 8.1 Update 1 will be focused primarily on making Windows 8.1 more useful to business users.

Another Nokia photographer that isn’t a stranger to our audience. Richard Dorman aka Sheridan01 has some mesmerising panoramas in this collection.

Rich is blessed with a photographer’s eye and living in one of the most beautiful locations to snap pictures. I came across some 925 Helsinki photos that iPhoto swiped a copy of and had to check the EXIF to make sure it wasn’t from my 60D. There’s a couple of shots of the Grand Canyon there too.

@Nokia_Connects is tagged to nominate Rich for MVC award.

Digitimes’ MWC 2014 expectations from Nokia: WP8.1 devices, Nokia Lumia 1820, 1525 and 1520v?

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 05:33 AM PST

Digitimes is expecting some WP8.1 devices from Nokia, by the name of Nokia Lumia 1820, 1525 and 1520V.

Should the 1820 exist, then the naming of these Nokia devices feel utterly stupid. qHD? qHD? Erm, what?

“1820 is likely to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 5.2-inch qHD display and 3400mAh battery”

Yes, I understand it’s more powerful than the 1520, but any particular reason to go to 1820? The ’1320′ is ‘just’ dualcore with entry level specs but is ‘up there’ in the nomenclature due to screen size.

Something called the 1525 supposedly has a 6″ display.

Based on what @evleaks has spilled before, Moneypenny should be expected as well as gesture based goldfinger, both tipped as the first WP8.1 devices.

Forbes: Just How Much Brand Damage Is Microsoft Doing To Nokia?

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 11:44 PM PST

Tero Kuittinen, contributor at Forbes asks: Just How Much Brand Damage Is Microsoft Doing To Nokia?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/terokuittinen/2014/01/23/just-how-much-brand-damage-is-microsoft-doing-to-nokia/

The question arises after Nokia’s surprise Q4. Expected continued growth met possibly with opposition to the Microsoft acquisition of Nokia’s D&S?

Is it a consumer reaction to the news or just continued elevated competition? Was this something Nokia had predicted and thus sold of D&S?

Nokia was expected to deliver 11-13% sequential smartphone volume growth. It delivered -7% decline – an abrupt reversal that blindsided both Wall Street and industry analysts. Something in the European and Asian attitudes towards the Microsoft purchase of Nokia has eluded American tech experts.

Kantar Worldpanel: WP 10.3% EU sales, 3rd month EU double digits

AAWP reports on Kantar’s data that WP has garnered 10.3% of EU sales. This is oddly higher than the 10% of last month despite Nokia’s sales reports.

News on the radio here say that Q4 has been pretty tough, so much so that even Sammy had to issue  profit warnings due to stronger competitors this month.

Kantar says:

Windows Phone has now held double digit share across Europe for three consecutive months. Unfortunately for Nokia the European smartphone market is only growing at 3% year on year so success in this market has not been enough to turn around its fortunes – reflected in its recent disappointing results. Its performance also deteriorated toward the end of 2013 in the important growth markets of China, USA and Latin America."

Cheers all for the tip!

Nokia X/Normandy Specs Leaked

Posted: 27 Jan 2014 11:37 PM PST

Nokia_Normandy

With just under a month until Nokia hits the MWC stage in Barcelona, to announce new devices, one of which is the heavily leaked Nokia Normandy, otherwise known as Nokia X. We have seen screenshots of the UI and a variety of colours, but little was known about specs until now.

Evleaks has tweeted that the Nokia X will have a dual-core Snapdragon Processor clocked at 1GHz, 4″ WVGA screen, 512MB RAM with 4GB internal storage and microSD slot. It will feature a 5MP shooter on the back, powered by a 1500MAh battery. As we saw earlier, there will be six colours, and dual-sim. Nokia Store will be on-board as well as “third-party” (apps or store?).

Not the first time I had seen these specs pop up though. Earlier I was linked to a vietnamese site (since taken down) that has the Nokia Normandy listed, and has these specs. Does that validate the leak? Or just show where evleaks’s source got the info from?
