Videos: Lumia 920 Vs. HTC 8X- Boot Time, Apps, Screen & Design

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 09:23 AM PST

Our buddy SamJPullen is doing a series of comparisons between the beloved 920 and the HTC 8X. So here’re a couple awesome videos showing off the boot speeds, app launching; then a second video comparing design and screens.

I was honestly surprised how long it took the 8X to boot, is it because of the O2 branding?

Of course it’s always nice to see a screen sensitivity comparison against another device; just to keep things in prescriptive.

*Also as noted in the video it seems as if the 920 has some sort of coating on the screen, possibly an oleophobic coating? There’s an obvious difference between the screen texture of the 920 and the 900; but I’m not sure what the reason behind it is? (is it just the curved glass?)

Second Shipment of 920′s Hits China; Sells out in under 20 Minutes

Last week we heard that the Lumia 920 sold out in record time after finally hitting Chinese stores, well apparently the second batch of phones has come in… and gone right out. Reports claim that the phone sold out in less than 20 minutes from the Nokia flagship store in Shanghai; with most demand being for the yellow variant.  According to the source the store didn’t allow any photography inside the actual store, but here are a couple pictures of the lines from the outside.

Video: Hands On Demo of Sailfish OS on N950

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 12:32 PM PST

Gallery Image

The luck guys/gals at engadget have gotten a chance to play with Sailfish OS/Jolla mobile on the N950. Take a look at the UI all over again with the hidden menus, gestures and built in apps.

(DAMN!! It looks so smooth! Although the font/theme does look very Androidish :/ )

I love the swiping backwards to go back! That’s one of the features that I though would’ve been a natural implementation of Swipe on the N9, but unfortunately not.

Read more and some some more images over at Engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/29/hands-on-with-jollas-sailfish-os-video/

BTW- Am I the only who felt some excess stress on the “true multi-tasking” after mentioning Windows phone :P

Forbes Absolutely Hates the Lumia 920 and Everything About it.. BooHoo

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 09:42 AM PST

Ok, I don’t even know where to start; since this “review” by Forbes is beyond ridiculous; I mean I’ve heard of Bias and fanboyism, but to this extent? Every single sentence of this review is a joke; and unfortunately somehow a site with reviews as poorly done as this still has a massive following. This so called review by Forbes is honestly some of the most shameless fanboyism I’ve ever seen, the author doesn’t even attempt to hide his hate for the Lumia 920 form the second he picked it up.

What was Nokia thinking in releasing such a subpar phone?

It has no chance to make a dent in the highly competitive smartphone market dominated by Samsung and Apple, or even attract the ex-RIM crowd.

After almost 2-months of continuous testing, the Lumia 920 is probably one of the worst smartphone that I have tried lately.

Here are my 5 top reasons not to buy it, even on sale at $39 on Amazon:

  1. it's bulky,

  2. heavy,

  3. overheats,

  4. has a short battery life,

  5. and  a horrible camera

We’ve seen some pretty awful reviews before, but this one just takes the cake; and honestly I only have one question for the man who wrote this, if the phone sucked this bad why did you torture yourself and use it for two months? Either it’s not as bad as you say, or you really haven’t used it..

Despite all the praise and the marketing around the Lumia PureView integrated camera, the results were a constant disappointment. The phone is slow at taking pictures that end up systematically a bit blur and is simply unusable under low light. In comparison, the  iPhone 5 camera did a good job under the same conditions, which I'm sure is also the case with the Galaxy S3

Seriously??? Unusable in low light??? Whatever this guy is on get me some because it’s obviously some strong Mojo. He also simply “forgot” to mention the amazing sun light readability, the OIS stabilization and the PureMotion display…Seriosuly Forbes fire this joker of a “tech writer”.

Read the rest of the mockery here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeanbaptiste/2012/12/28/nokia-lumia-920-review-thick-heavy-hot-poor-battery-life/

*note it’s worth pointing out that Forbes apparently hated the Lumia 920 from the day it was announced, claiming that it brought “nothing new” WTF?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2012/09/05/nokias-windows-8-phone-so-umm-thats-it-hunh/

Someone quite obviously has a vendetta against Nokia…

*Note: the reason i’m posting this is because it’s a perfect example for the “attempted Crucifixion” that I mentioned in yesterdays post

Thanks for the tip viipottaja

Video: How it’s made – Nokia Wireless Charging Espresso bar – Nokia Russia

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 05:34 AM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-29 at 13.28.12From Nokia Russia is an interesting video showing how quickly a coffee bar gets transformed to be QI wireless charging (Nokia Lumia 920/820 etc) friendly.

Screen Shot 2012-12-29 at 13.32.53

Like the video we saw yesterday, this just blends into the furniture. No plugging in, just resting your phone. In this instance, instead of being on the table, there’s a little stand (with the sugar/sweeteners) that lights up.

Whilst you charge up on caffeine, your Lumia charges up too.

Video: Special Edition Nokia Lumia 920 packaging unboxing by The Manalyst

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 04:55 AM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-29 at 12.48.05

Do you remember back in November we were treated to some glimpses of a special edition packaging of the Nokia Lumia 920.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/11/18/limited-edition-nokia-lumia-920-packagin…

Manal, the recipient of that 920 messaged above to let us know she’s done an unboxing.

The contents are as standard, all in gorgeous yellow. However, bundled in are the wireless charging plate and fatboy pillow. The only thing that would have completed are the yet to be released Purity Pros in yellow, no? :p Manal didn’t use her wireless charger much as she prefers being able to use it whilst it’s charging. You can still sort of do that. It’s never really been a problem for me though. I’ve never really had to ever plug in my 920 at all since owning it. (Especially with SkyDrive wirelessly transferring pictures/videos/files over to my computer).

The second half of the video looks into the phone and Manal mentions something called “Midnight Developer Challenge” – a campaign to produce more localised apps in Saudi Arabia by both Nokia and MS.

My Dream Nokia #77: Nokia Lumia Play, Xbox Phone WP8 Concept

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 04:47 AM PST

Nokia_Lumia_Play_concept_1

Possibly one of the final My Dream Nokia’s for 2012, this is a much anticipated phone concept by many. A Nokia Xbox phone for MDN #77, the Nokia Lumia Play (could have been Play 360 but Nokia already has that product :p).

The first picture above shows the two modes. It’s not dual screen, but it does have dual sliders popping out either side (perhaps a little like the N95 in some sense) where gaming buttons appear, D-pad on the left, XYAB buttons on the right.

It’s quite a striking design when you look through all the images. The angular nature looks very sci-fi futuristic, quite ‘Xbox-esque’ (at least the old one, hence old logo) whilst the bright colours sing out loud that this is Nokia Lumia.

I do also really love the glowing XBox Logo.

Despite such a form factor possibly being thick, it seems impossibly thin at 7.6mm.

  • - The Lumia PLAY is powered by Microsoft´s XBOX ®, and it is possible to use your phone as a gamepad when playing in a XBOX 360;
  • - It features a high definition, 1136×640 resolution, touchscreen with Corning ® Gorilla ® Glass;
  • - It also has a front 5MP camera capable of recording 720p videos and on the back it has a 10MP, Full-HD camera;
  • - The Nokia Lumia PLAY runs Windows Phone 8;
  • - Dimensions: 124 x 59x 7.6 mm

I’d love for Nokia to produce THE Nokia Lumia Xbox phone. That would catapult it to an enormous amount of recognition. Although it would mean that we’d be expecting some very decent Xbox titles (not just phone versions though some look awesome). Imagine Halo for Nokia? :p Though I’d suspect the other partners might not like this. Perhaps it’s something MS themselves would try :/.
