TheVerge: Jolla – what Nokia could have been, what if MeeGo wasn’t abandoned for WP?

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 12:57 PM PST

Screen Shot 2013-11-29 at 20.45.51

TheVerge looks at the Jolla phone and reminisces of what could have been for Nokia if they continued the path of MeeGo.

Remember Vlad’s opinion on the Nokia N9 was the beginning of the turn around regarding praising Nokia in both Hardware and Software. N9 felt fresh in design and in usability. Whilst Nokia went a different path, some ex-Nokians kept the candle burning and forged a new path inspired by N9/Qt/MeeGo. The first result of that is this device from Jolla.

I myself would have preferred Nokia sticking Maemo on their phones. Mmm. N900 slim with 41mp. :D

Oh the Family!

Screen Shot 2013-11-29 at 20.49.42

Their feedback on the Jolla device isn’t as flattering as the N9 was.

  • ‘highly unintuitive and unwieldy to the point that the UI paradigm can be considered broken’ – Hoping it’s initially just difficult to learn but then is easy to use thereafter? Ideally you’d just pick it up ASAP though. VLAD seemed to find it a frustrating learning experience (more info on why in the link). Unlike the N9, Ahtisaari was proud that he had simplified the Swipe UI better than Apple.
  • Fundamental issues with apps crashing
  • Slower to load
  • Jolla wanted to get the phone out to customers ASAP. Bug fixes will come to iron these things out. (Best that way given that the current audience won’t mind that anyway. Better than waiting months/years to perfect something that suddenly is obsolete).

Hardware wise, a good first impression. Blocky utilitarian sandwich design appeals.

Since we talk about anything Nokia related and Jolla’s connections are still very strong with Nokia, we’ll share more Jolla news.

For just Jolla things, you may like to try, as per suggestion in comments

How to: Access Google Play Store from Jolla Phone

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 12:26 PM PST

Screen Shot 2013-11-29 at 20.22.31

Jolla Sailfish has less to worry about regarding ecosystems as Jolla can utilise Android apps without having to rewrite them (e.g. BB10). But how do you get these apps to the Jolla Phone?

There are many ways and currently, some instructions floating around the web by a Jolla user says they’ve found a way to access the store directly. Now you do this at your own risk.

  1. Enable Jolla Developer Mode and allow SSH-connection.
  2. Download http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip and extract it.
  3. Plug your Jolla with USB to computer in normal mode.
  4. Copy system-folder from your extract files to Jolla.
  5. Open SSH-connection to your phone and login.
  6. Write “devel-su” and press enter. After that, write your password.
  7. Write command: rsync -av –ignore-existing /home/nemo/system /opt/alien
  8. Reboot phone
  9. Install Google Play services to Jolla
  10. Install Google Play Store to Jolla
  11. Start Play Store and do updates.

Sony Sponsored iSellMobile Awards crowns Nokia Lumia 1020 as Phone of the Year

An interesting result for the Nokia Lumia 1020 which is described as the run away winner of the Phone of The Year by the Sony sponsored iSellMobile Awards (not something I’m familiar with).

It beat the Xperia Z1 from Sony, Note III, HTC One and iPhone 5S.

Nice job online community for at least raising the profile of the Nokia handset there.

The tablet category couldn’t escape Sony fans though.

Video: Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Galaxy Note 3

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 03:27 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-11-29 at 10.58.49

Here’s another video comparing the phablets from Nokia and Sammy. The 6″ 1520 goes up against the 5.7″ Note 3.

The video (almost 15 minutes and 20 seconds long) compares design, screen, layout of buttons, camera, OS, apps.

Despite being on the same processor and the Note 3 having 3GB RAM, they note that the 1520 is more consistent and snappy whilst they see some lag in the Note 3 and there’s sometimes a hitch with performance.

I like how in demoing smart scroll with eyes they had to move the Note 3. It’s neat to think about (as well as hover gestures) but at the moment, current implementation leads pretty much every user I’ve encountered to just turn these off. Similar features are said to be worked on (3D touch? Or is that a different implementation). I hope it’s actually a useful feature (like being able to use gloves when it’s cold).

Battery life, better than average on both.

Screen Shot 2013-11-29 at 11.09.42

Atm, it’s a deeper software experience on the Note 3. It takes a better advantage of that screen space (hence why even after finding it on initial release, I warmed later to the original Note). But you’ll also appreciate the 1520 experience, which in user reviews seem really pleased so far.

Price wise, $100 on contract really surprises. An impressive price point considering the features, and performance. The $300 for the Note 3 is apparently greatly out of proportion.

What we’d like to see in future:

  • Tiled multitasking, e.g. snapping like in Windows 8
  • More information on screen
  • More customisation of homescreen
  • Pen support (well, I can use any pen, not just S pen, pencil, fork etc thanks to the super sensitive display, but it would be nice to have additional use with the pen too)
  • Improved voice recognition/consistency

Nokia “Guru” Headset to Launch Mid December; Official Name “BH-121 Touch”

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:37 PM PST

Nokia-GuruA while back we heard rumors of an upcoming Nokia device/accessory being called the “Nokia Guru”. Now we can confirm that the device will launch under the name “BH-121 Touch”; although the touch part of the name refers to the fact that the device has NFC on board for quick pairing. The device is somewhat a successor to the BH -221 that was launched back at MWC 2012.

The other piece of information we can add to this is that the launch date is scheduled for mid-December at the moment (week 50); so it should make it out before the holidays. However we’ve heard that the device is slightly different from the renders @evleaks previously shared (as seen above); but we don’t have any exact info on what’s changed.

Now if only the Nokia treasure tag would become official…

Video: Nokia Lumia 1320 – Big and beautiful, 6″ display at affordable price tag

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 10:17 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-11-28 at 18.09.52

The Nokia Lumia 1520 isn’t the only 6″ WP Phablet. For those who want the inches but at a more affordable price, there’s also the 1320. 6″ display, 720p screen, super sensitive display with PureMotion+, Sunlight readability enhancements, Clear black, 5MP, MicroSD, 1080p video.

$339 unsubsidised – 207 GBP. Not bad at all. And consider how much that will be when the prices drop further once it’s eased in the market (like the 620/520), it should sell quite well given the huge trend now for bigger and bigger displays.

Elop less likely as MS-CEO? Still in mix but Mulally and Nadella ahead

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 10:09 AM PST

According to Bloomberg, those in the know at MS say that the next CEO is more likely to either be Alan Mulally, CEO at Ford or Satya Nadella, EVP MS Cloud and Enterprises.

Elop and Tony Bates are still in consideration but less likely now. Could Elop’s chances have been affected by the rumours of scrapping Xbox and bing?

Even if someone else other than Elop were to take over, it doesn’t completely prevent him becoming CEO. TheVerge says that Mulally could act as a ‘caretaker’ CEO until someone emerged internally.

Bill notes that MS has only had two CEOs, something quite unusual. Could there be two in quick succession?

From the looks of the video below, Bill wants to find the ‘right guy for the right time for the company we both love’. Right guy at the right time. Could the right time mean something else needs to be done first? He chokes up at this bit.

The Other Half

The Other Half is a smart cover – it changes your Jolla phone with a few easy moves.

Make sure you have a Jolla Account so The Other Half can download content from the Jolla store.

When you replace the back cover of your Jolla with a Jolla Ambience Other Half, it starts communicating and tells you what new Ambiences it has for you. You get a preview of the new Ambiences and it asks you if you want to add them to the ones you already have.

When the Ambience Other Half has finished installing the new content, you can create new favourite Ambiences with ringtones and colours for your different moods.

From now on changing the Other Half changes the Ambience.

Ex-Nokian creates “PulseOn” – “Most Accurate Heart Monitor In The World”

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 04:32 PM PST

PulseOn

With all the hype of Jolla today, selling their first handset, comes another great story from an ex-Nokian start-up. Tero Mennander, former Nokia engineer, claims to have created (and patented) the world’s most accurate heart monitor, PulseOn.

PulseOn is a wearable device that looks like a watch, so unlike traditional heart rate monitors, it doesn’t need to be big, or bulky, or even strapped to the wearer’s chest. Apparently other monitors can be fooled by the consumption of alcohol – and will give a false reading.

"If you drink alcohol before you go to sleep, wake up in morning, a motion-based activity tracker (like the Fitbit or Fuelband) will tell you you've been sleeping long and well, even though you haven't," Mennader says. "PulseOn will tell you you've been sleeping a while, but your body hasn't really recovered."

If this shapes up to be a success, it would change the fitness and health side wearable technology, and would show just how talented the people coming out of Nokia can be.

We will keep you guys updated with any information as this progresses.

Camera comparison: Nokia N95 versus Nokia Lumia 1020

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 10:24 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-11-27 at 18.17.32

Nokia has always had a history of producing top notch imaging. The likes of the N95 was available when the very first iPhone was launched. Remember the N95 had VGA video recording. iPhone couldn’t record video. N95 was a stellar 5MP snapper. iPhone was powered by potato. N95 had LED flash. Stay pitch black in the iPhone. And so forth regarding the technological excellence in the Nseries compared to Apple. If only the UI/UX could have matched, eh?

Anyways, in terms of cameras, Nokia handsets from back then can rival handsets from competitors. My N82 still whips many bottoms thanks to that stellar Xenon.

AAS looks back at the N95 and compares it to the 1020.

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/18784_Nokia_imaging-seven_years_of_p.php

Quite literally, the results are like night and day. In fact, the N95′s result is way too dim, compared to what my eyes registered, while the 1020′s result is too light, though the latter’s is impressive in how crisp it ends up being, despite a long shutter time, thanks to the presence of OIS. The usual arguments over how true to life low light shots should be will rage here, of course.

__________________

It’s fair to say that the Lumia 1020 camera is a clear generation ahead of the N95′s overall, though the latter shouldn’t feel too disappointed – the N95 camera still matches results from some 5MP smartphone cameras in 2013. I’m not sure whether the same could be said of many other smartphone metrics from that same era

Screen Shot 2013-11-27 at 18.18.09

Low light with and without flash, the 1020 shows how far Nokia’s come. Imagine what kind of imaging Nokia could make should they be still allowed to have phones as thick as the N95 (though it does look slightly thicker due to that slide. I remember wishing the phone was just as thick as the screen part. I think some now are right?)

Upcoming “MoneyPenny” Device to Come in Dual Sim Variant As Well

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 09:15 AM PST

Previously we heard from @evleaks that “Moneypenny” a codename for a Nokia device in production is going to be one of the first devices to carry WP Blue. It seems it will also be the first Dual Sim Lumia (and Windows Phone) device.

Since he states that it’s another version of the device, I hope it isn’t a low-end device; but instead a proper device that people would actually want to buy; that just happens to have a dual sim version as well.

Of course there’s also the fact of what dual sims will work like on WP8; will they merge contacts and call lists etc? Or will it have separate profiles?

Anyone been holding out for a dual sim Lumia out there?

Urpo Karjalainen appointed as Newkia CEO – first phone in development

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 11:58 PM PST

newkia_fakelogo

The spin-off Newkia has appointed a CEO, Urpo Karjalainen, according to ZDNet. An ex-Nokian (and from BlackBerry), Karljalainen is described as “most accomplished mobile executive in Asia over the last 15 years…Under Urpo’s leadership, Asia became Nokia’s largest and most profitable market… No other mobile executive in Asia has the contacts, reach, and credibility among Asia’s mobile operators, distributors, and dealers that he has.”

Urpo may not have been a familiar name as he was SVP at Nokia China from 2001-2004, Asia Pacific VP and strategic manager as well as VP Sales Nokia Mobile Phones, 1997 – 1999.

Urpo believes Nokia would have gone a better path under Android and are moving rapidly towards development of their first phone (hopefully not just a generic Android box with Newkia on it).

Urpo said:

I see a huge opportunity for Newkia in the current market, and I am very excited to be part of creating something new built on Nokia’s incredible legacy. We are building a team that will carry forward the best know-how and qualities of phones that made Nokia the world-leading mobile phone brand for 14 years.

MNB Reader Generated: Nokia planning “bounceback”, “new weapons”

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 02:08 PM PST

nokia logoJanne’s latest piece looks again at Nokia’s potential come back to the consumer market. Something some thought would be wishful thinking what with the sale of D&S. But some recent news from key Nokians suggest there may be Nokia branded consumer things in the future.

Cheers Janne!

_______

In continuing on the theme I’ve posted on previously, the post-D&S sale Nokia (http://mynokiablog.com/2013/10/25/mnb-rg-what-will-the-post-ds-sale-nokia-look-like/), here is a bit more from two links tipped by myself, prashant and Jiipee yesterday. I thought I’d combine these into some sort of coherent post. What will Nokia do, once the mobile phones side of thing is sold off to Microsoft in Q1?

Well, we know Nokia is re-grouping into its Karaportti campus in Espoo, Finland, where NSN is already headquartered (http://mynokiablog.com/2013/11/21/nokia-house-becomes-microsoft-house/). Karaportti campus is home of a few new office buildings, Karaportti Midpoint – the new Nokia HQ – and the NSN HQ. These are much newer buildings than the Nokia House was, by the way, although the in-land Karaportti location is not as glamorous as the seaside Nokia House. Karaportti campus itself, though, is quite old and used to house, I believe, an NSN factory at one point and the buildings have been renovated into new uses of Nokia and NSN. It is a sprawling area of many, many Nokia and NSN office buildings and is actually rated as an area of special national significance – the Finnish army regularly practices the defense of the area, like they practice the defense of TV stations for example, so don’t get spooked if a tank blocks your way to the new Nokia HQ.

Here are the recent articles tipped:

Nokia, Once The World’s Biggest Mobile-Phone Maker, Is Planning The Next Bounceback
http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-once-the-worlds-biggest-mobile-phone-maker-is-planning-the-next-bounceback-2013-11

Tässä ovat Nokian uudet aseet – katso!
http://www.iltasanomat.fi/digi/art-1288624188915.html

The English story speaks for itself, for the Finnish one I’ll quote Jiipee:

  • Nokia is now free from the device and ecosystem shackles and can offer their tech to anyone interested. Looking for new ways to introduce innovation to market
  • Nokia's future is to become technology company, whose core is research. Nokia is about to use half of the cash gained from NMP sales to research. (I wonder, if he can say that now, when the new strategy is not public)
  • Nokia will continue to research mobile phone tech and may license it to others, not only phone manufacturers. They may also manufacture/design some devices themselves or only license.
  • Then there are some (lame) examples of tech Nokia has been working on.

Jiipee’s personal note:

They are now talking how they are preparing for the "programmed" world. Ollila et al have said that Nokia didn’t have enough sw competence. How are they going to compete in the new programmed world, when they've closed down their sw operations?

Janne’s personal note:

An interesting note in the article was that Nokia was now looking at being able to take advantage of their research better, when they wouldn't be constrained by trying to fit them into phones.

Hello guys. Thank you so much for your patience in sticking with the issues the site has been having, particularly those who are persistent in attempting to share their comments/tips with us despite the horrendous comment system.

Every attempt at fixing it hasn’t worked so far and unfortunately due to uni getting super busy, I haven’t had much time to fix them properly.

The interaction between our readers is very important to us. A lot of the time, I get much more from the comment I’m reading from you guys than the post and sources itself.

We stuck with the default wordpress system as it worked best for us regarding: Spam control, tip messages, folks on mobile browsers having an easier time with wordpress comments (vs disqus) filtering inappropriate words. But it might be time to discuss the use of disqus again.

If your comments aren’t appearing they aren’t because of censorship. They are more likely due to:

  • WordPress error
  • Use of profanity (you can bypass them by using “***”)
  • More than 4 links
  • Spam phrases
  • overzealous spam

Feel free to test the comment box below. If that still doesn’t work, you can get in touch to jay@mynokiablog.com just so I know it’s still not working.

Apologies for the inconvenience. It’s hard enough having the situation Nokia’s going through without the site itself being a pain to use. And because of that, thank you so much for those that persisted with us.

This sneaked into my twitter feed somehow (not RTd as far as I know and not following rockstar) but they just announced that Grand Theft Auto is coming to a select number of Mobile Platforms.

I wasn’t expecting WP to be mentioned, and it’s not. But that’s probably because there’s a typo as they mention Windows Mobile.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for mobile also comes equipped with full controller support, including Made for iOS controller capability on iOS7. It will be available for select iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle and Windows Mobile devices. Stay tuned for more details in the weeks ahead.

The 4.7″ 4G Nokia Lumia 625 is available for just £129.95! You would need to top up £15 but that’s credit that goes back for your use. At the till, it’ll be 144.95.

If CPW continues the trend, their handsets tend to be unlocked – something you’d usually pay extra for.

Well, the case anyway. There’s not much more to it.
