Video: Symbian Belle FP2 leaked on RDA? Looking sweet!

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 01:10 PM PDT

Remember those screenshots of Belle FP2?

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/06/07/screenshots-nokia-belle-fp2/

This is supposedly a video leaked on a Remote Device Access. I think Accenture is doing a great job on prettifying up Symbian, cleaning it up here and there and making it more streamlined and consistent.

What do you reckon?

GSM Arena’s Nokia 808 PureView battery test

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:17 PM PDT

GSM Arena have published their battery tests for the Nokia 808 PureView.

It scores quite well, 3G talk time, web browsing and video playback. This is helped both by having Symbian, a relatively less power hungry processor and less pixels to process on screen.  Video playback is super high at 9h and 53 minutes!

Owners of the Nokia 808 PureView, how has your battery life been?

Cheers rishabh for the tip!

RIM eyeing up Windows Phone 8 for future BlackBerry devices, abandon BB10?

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:13 PM PDT

BlackBerry makers RIM wanted to go it alone with QNX and BB10. However, today we hear that they’ve met yet another delay and are pushing back BB10 for ‘Early’ 2013 (Remember what ‘early 2011′ was for PR2?. Yikes. Well, that’s better for WP8 for two reasons. It’s already hard enough with the current competitors and secondly, because RIM might be considering going WP too.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/29/us-rim-options-idUSBRE85S04J20120629

Reuters reports that WP8 might be an option now for RIM, possibly dropping BB10 too instead of having WP8 concurrently. RIM could also get Microsoft to buy a stake in the company for ‘marketing and other expenses’. That option is not the most ideal for RIM apparently because it could mean the end of their independence. RIM’s board however would prefer to stick to developing BB10.

It was previously rumoured before that both Nokia and Microsoft would combine to purchase RIM, but that is not discussed.

What effect would RIM WP8 devices have on Nokia Lumia?BTW  Did you know that BlackBerry are making ‘Nseries’ devices now? Nseries with Qt…from RIM…hmm…

Cheers Jonas, Zipa and others for the tip!

Video: Nokia 808 PureView Caterpillar Macro

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 01:49 AM PDT

Here is an example where the ‘lossless’ digital zoom comes into great use with the Nokia 808 PureView.

Like with the N8, when taking close up video, you don’t have to physically get closer. Just use that zoom in video. No worries about loss in detail. Compare post production zoom and zoom in video with the 808 and you’ll see it makes a heck of a difference.

Sometimes, if you’re taking snaps of these little creatures, going physically closer might disturb them so zoom is a better option.

This video also showcases the continuous AF, which is really fast and accurate. Touch focus is also possible on the 808 should you want to (pretty much) manually direct the focus points.

Note, when zoomed in, vibrations/shaking is also magnified so be warned. You might want to have a tripod if you don’t have super steady hands.

Listen out for the channel separation in the audio.

This is more representative of the kind of footage an every day user would get. We’ve seen Topolino70′s work showing the very best of the best, but that requires a little set up and some equipment (well a tripod).

Inappropriate uses of Nokia 808 PureView: #1 Cinema Filming

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 01:08 AM PDT

I got tipped this nearly two weeks ago now but I didn’t want to post it because we’re not condoning this type of activity. @Jenjeman tweeted me a similar video today of someone else giving this a go. I thought it might be worth sharing at least to show the quality of both video and spectacular audio from the Nokia 808 PureView.

Note: Do not try this yourself as it’s most likely illegal to do so.

The 808′s recording quality is phenomenal. But with such great power comes great responsibility. Use your 808 wisely.

Cheers Евгений and @jenjeman for the tip!

Note, although this is numbered, this is not intended to be a series so don’t go around looking for inappropriate uses for your 808. It was just there for the title.

Video: MASSIVE Nokia 808 PureView review (65 minutes of in-depth reviewing)

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:34 AM PDT

Francesco from NokioTeca has tweeted me to let me know his 65minute video review is up. I’ve had a quick glance of the video and it is very in depth. They explore things such as USB OTG, HDMI ouptut, the browser, video, NFC etc.

I don’t have enough time at the moment to write up a translation of the video as I’m finalising a few things before I leave for Europe tomorrow. But when I get a chance, I will. (Unless someone is amazing and does it first)

Here’s the video:

N9 PR 1.3 coming “soon” – Small but valuable update? PR 1.4 possible?

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:03 AM PDT

As always, take these with pinches of salt.

So Nokia Philippines tweeted that the N9 will get PR 1.3 soon. We knew it was coming, with rumours suggesting end of May. Its now July (almost) and the only info we have had, that it still is in the works despite all the job cuts, was an email to a developer.

We have seen Nokia PR stuff up when it comes to announcing updates, so I’m not getting my hopes up at all. In fact, I’m pretty content with the way my N9 works after a few tweaks made recently.

The second rumour, comes from NokioTeca. They have apparently been told by a Nokia spokes person that PR 1.4 is planned for the N9. This post was a few weeks back, before we heard of the cuts at Nokia, so there is even less chance that this is true.

In my opinion guys, be happy you got 2 great updates. Anything after 1.2 is a huge blessing.

Marketplace to be available to more than 180 countries at WP8 launch

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:45 PM PDT

According to the Windows Phone blog, more than 180 countries will have access to WP marketplace at launch. Finally! WP shot itself in the foot with the limited availability of marketplace (and language support). It currently stands at 63 and was even less than that when the first Lumias were launched. Nokia may have helped add their expertise in this as their own Nokia Store was already available in over 180 countries (though I’m not sure how many could purchase apps, but it was growing).

The table above shows the full list (though may still change) and you can see what new countries are available today. Developers can make app submissions from around 38 markets.

New App Hub:

This has apparently been rebuilt from the ground up to be more robust and scalable. Devs will have faster certification, publishing times, better reporting and more.

They note that the new architecture allows for app filtering based on resolution and other ‘key characteristics’ to help better target audiences. I hope there won’t be fragmentation involved due to inappropriate screen resolution. Any scaling going on?

RIM Close to the Edge Again: BB10 Delayed, More Jobs Cut!

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 09:45 AM PDT

I guess that the end of June 2012 is the moment when everyone realized that Research in Motion is actually a dying patient, not someone in need of a transplant. The company just announced that they’ll let an extra 5,000 employees ago, added to the 2,000 cuts already announced. And worst of all, the product they took so much pride in over the past month, BB 10 OS will be delayed…

The platform is now scheduled to arrive in 2013, which is a real bummer, since that means that we might go through the entire year of 2012 without a single new RIM phone. This disaster could end with RIM getting bought for pennies, as its value keeps dropping. Samsung, Microsoft and Facebook have all been mentioned as buyers over the past year, but still they won’t sell. Firing 7,000 people in 2 months, changing the management a couple of times lately and not offering even 100k in your app store is a huge problem nowadays.

BB10 OS was the last hope for the Canadian company and now we’ll learn their move during the company’s conference call for earnings, that should happen soon. There are two options here: RIM starts working in other fields, focuses solely on software or they just sell the whole business.

Google Search Versus Apple’s Siri; Google Wins! (Video)

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 01:47 AM PDT

Google I/O 2012 wasn’t all about the new Nexus Tablet, or Nexus Q or even Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It had some extra novelty that people neglected, like the cool Google Glasses, the arrival of Chrome in a finalized version or the new Google Search with voice input and the features of a real voice assistant. So, is it better than Siri? Let’s find out from a comparison done by Techno Buffalo.

For one thing, the Google Search by voice offers results faster, so it wins the speed duel. Also, its voice output is more human sounding than the robotic Siri, so yet another point scored by Google’s solution. Siri has the advantage of more polished graphics when delivering results such as a basketball player’s height or scores for a recent game. While Google’s assistant may not look fancy, it’s certainly efficient, intuitive, responsive and very fast.

Among the tasks involved in this comparison there was a request to show the weather, the scores for a recent game, a sportsman’s height, the setup of a countdown and a remind to “review the Nexus 7″. In each of these tasks Google Search was faster. So, is Siri dead yet or do you still like it? One thing’s for sure: both these solutions are better than Samsung’s S Voice.

Lenovo LePhone K860 Features Quad Core Samsung Exynos CPU

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:34 AM PDT

It appears that Samsung will be lending its quad core Exynos processor not only to the Meizu MX 4 core device, but also to a new Lenovo handset. I’m talking about the Lenovo LePhone K860, that’s pictured below and has the format of a phablet, rather than a phone.

This device was spotted in China and it comes with Android 4.0 ICS, a quad core Exynos CPU at 1.4 GHz and a 5 inch HD display. There’s an 8 megapixel camera at the back with LED flash, a 2 megapixel front cam and 1GB of RAM. There’s also 4GB of ROM on board and this device weighs 185 grams and measures 9.6 mm in thickness. Taking all these dimensions into account, I have to say that this device is slightly smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Note, at 5.3 inches.

Lenovo hopes to sell 18 million smartphones this year and the K860 and their Intel CPU-based effort should help reach that figure. Lenovo LePhone K860 should launch in China in August and I suspect that the price will be better than the one of the Galaxy Note.
