WP8.1 with Quiet Hours, Office Lens, Apps to memory card, backups with app data and more

Posted: 16 Feb 2014 10:35 AM PST

Daniel Rubino shares some more info about the WP8.1 features. I’m somewhat lost at what’s coming, including Quiet Hours (so there’s no need to switch back on forth to silent mode and then forget you’re in silent mode), office lens and more. The list appears to be more changes on top of the ones we’ve already heard about. It’s quite a lot:

Original source here: http://sinclairinat0r.com/2014/02/15/more-features-to-look-forward-to-in-windows-phone-8-1/Screen Shot 2014-02-16 at 18.25.15

  • Sharing secured WI-Fi Networks with contacts if they have Wi-Fi Sense. They don't get to see the shared password though
  • Social notifications will now show up in Action Center by swiping from the top of the screen
  • Operators can now control Data Sense limits remotely
  • Operators can also install certain applications once a SIM card is detected
  • Along with normal updates, there are now "important" updates.
  • Options to always download emails and pictures within them
  • Encrypted and signed e-mail support
  • Change default SMS app. You can also change which SMS app will show notifications.
  • Enterprise enrolled phones can have their passwords changed and remotely locked
  • "Write, when I swipe through letters". That should be self-explanatory
  • Geofence monitoring support. Geofence is a boundary around a place of interest to you. Location services can monitor geofences to tell your apps when you're entering and leaving them. This would be really good for IFTTT
  • Office Lens support. Will scan in documents and screens
  • The phone will have to update to the latest version before you can restore it to factory settings
  • Option to update store apps automatically -
  • Option to update store apps when only on Wi-Fi - Nice additions. Will be useful for users. It’s nice every now and again to find out what got updated. Perhaps the next thing they should add is to tell you what changes were made? Surely some will want to disable this in case they get apps that progressively get worse with each update (such as several apps on my iPad. It’s like the developers don’t want you to use their apps. e.g. numbers).
  • App Suggestions by location
  • Manual Update checks
  • Password protected Office document support
  • Trusted app list for NFC that will remove the need for asking whether you want to open a particular app.
  • In-call speech commands. You'll be able to say "Call XXXXXX".
  • Double-Tap to unlock your phone (Feature from Lumia devices on Amber Update and newer)
  • Quiet Hours -
  • Double Tap to Power Off - I’m intrigued to how this will work. Hopefully no one will be double tapping to unlock only to turn the phone off.
  • Notification if charger isn't of adequate power - Good. I like the chime that WP does when it is plugged in, and although annoying, the repeated chime when it isn’t plugged in properly/not sat on the wireless charger properly. Better than thinking it’s charging when it isn’t.
  • Screenshot button combination is now Power + Volume Up – Perhaps easier to perform? My mum found the original method difficult at first, constantly heading home instead.
  • Chkdsk for SD Cards essentially
  • Apps on SD Cards are only allowed from ONE originating phone. If it detects that apps from another phone are installed on the SD Card, then it will ask to delete those first. -  Cool beans. This would be neat. Especially as it means reduced restriction for those with smaller on-device memory but large memory cards.
  • Voice Narrator for Accessibility
  • The Search button will be the new way to open Speech instead of the Start button (Since the newer phones will have the start button on screen) - Makes more sense. The search button can actually have an intended use versus the ‘damn I pressed the stupid Bing button’ – I recall from other posts there’s a feature to reduce mispress of this unfortunate button.
  • New Email sync options with accordance to usage patterns (i.e. If you get a lot of mail on particular days and if you don't check mail every day).
  • Change the size and amount of tiles on your start screen. Someone please remind Joe Belfiore to get his 30 minute presentation on changing tile sizes ready.
  • Wallet supports tickets and membership cards
  • App Syncing - meaning? Does that mean user data is saved so I don’t have to restart games over and over when I switch phones?
  • Backups now include application data (ABOUT TIME) - Hurrah!
  • Screen Reader functionality (Maybe Text-To-Speech for apps?)
  • Screen Recording functionality - Interesting. Useful for app reviews perhaps.
  • Inner Circle of contacts. Up to 40 contacts can be in the inner circle.
  • You can favorite photos by tapping a heart icon
  • Virtual SmartCard support

Indicated by the YouTube comments, Nokia is showing support for Same Love this Valentine’s weekend in this video that shares Valentine pics.

Nokia, Connecting People. All people :).

Juno/Inception/X-Men  star, Ellen Page delivered a powerful speech this weekend at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation to show support from an industry that otherwise places crushing standards on everyone.

WP8.1 coming with a lot more features than those seen in SDK. A lot!

Posted: 16 Feb 2014 06:06 AM PST

Screen Shot 2014-02-16 at 14.02.25News about WP8.1′s new features is coming in left right and centre as info leaks from the WP8.1 SDK. But, Tom Warren (Windows specialist at TheVerge) says there’s a lot more features that aren’t in the SDK. A lot that is hidden. He reiterates once more that it’s a lot.

Hopefully these are features that will help WP8.1 not only meet up with expectations but exceed them. All those WP UserVoice requests? Hopefully the practical ones will be met.

The only disappointing thing is that we have to wait quite a while to see it (consumers as downloads). Possibly around summer time if we’re lucky.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!

Whilst we are aware of many of the new features coming to WP8.1 in April, the changes here visually look subtle.

WP 8.1 to Also bring Backgrounds for Start Screen, Browser Sync and More

Posted: 15 Feb 2014 07:46 AM PST

BgcXgRiCEAAnfhN

As the leaks for WP 8.1 keep coming, it starts looking better and better, this latest one from the Verge references a feature that many have been asking for, the ability to superimpose your start screen on an image; similarly to Windows 8.1. This would overall help with the unique customization of each person’s device and help make your phone more “personal”. Another possible addition to the start screen is the ability to place three columns of medium sized tiles on all devices, regardless of the screen size or resolution (under the “show more tiles option- like Windows 8.1).

Another much awaited feature is the ability to sync your IE (11) browser with that of your Windows 8.1 device, so you can have your favorites, and browsing history everywhere you go, as well as syncing open tabs. Another feature change in IE 11 will be a newly added “reading view” similar to that available in Safari on iOS/MacOS, as well as private browsing and a password manager.

One trend you”ll notice from all these features is that everything that was added to Windows 8.1 is coming to WP 8.1, more sings of the impending merger of RT with WP I presume. What do you guys think of these latest features, and the WP 8.1 update in general? It sure is shaping up to be a good one.

Nokia Motion Monitor Beta, count your steps intellegently.

Posted: 15 Feb 2014 02:18 AM PST

Nokia had an experimental app back in the days of the Nokia N8 called Wellness Diary it was an excellent step counter with food intake logging and general health advice.

wellness diary

Nokia switched to Windows Phone and soon there after the Wellness Diary beta got closed with no option to keep the app running.

This is why when Nokia announced the Lumia 1520 with a step counter in Glance screen I was over come with joy, I love motion tracking apps and I just bought a Fitbit (I’m kind of mad I only found out about this app after my purchase!)

here’s some screenshots and extensive info by Nokia Beta labs team.wp_ss_20140215_0004

motion montior 1

How does Motion Monitor work:

  • Motion Monitor application runs always on in the background
  • Application uses dedicated core on Nokia Lumia 1520 and Nokia Lumia Icon to off-load sensor data processing from main processor, enabling algorithms to run using low power
  • Once the application is started it starts to track your physical activities
  • Requires 10 days to learn your average day-to-day activity, then compares a day’s activity against your whole activity history
  • Compares your activity against previous day’s activity for the first 10 days

Known limitations and issues:

  • This application works only on Nokia Lumia 1520 and Nokia Lumia Icon devices
    • Application uses specific hardware that is available only in these devices
  • Glance screen support works only if you are running the Black SW update
  • This version is only available in English
  • App uses power – but consumption is low
  • App may detect steps while inside moving car

Tips and tricks:

  • Please go through the guided tour. It will provide basic tutorial for the application
  • You can navigate in week and month views using vertical swipes
  • Tapping a given day in week and month views opens dashboard view for that day
  • You can add Motion Monitor to your Glance screen and lock screen from Motion Monitor >> Settings
  • You can reset all collected motion data from Motion Monitor >> Settings >> reset

We understand that this app is 3 months old now, but it only came to our attention now and as we never reported it back then, it seemed fit we do now that the Lumia 1520 is actually worldwide. :)

Whatsapp for WP Getting Custom Backgrounds and Notification Tones in Next Update

Posted: 14 Feb 2014 12:29 AM PST

WhatsappWhatsapp is one app that a lot of people rely on, unfortunately its performance on WP isn’t exactly the best out there; with random crashes, delayed notifications and a pretty ugly chat UI. However a lot of that is changing in the upcoming update for Windows Phone. The latest update to the Whatsapp beta brings the option to add a custom background to your messages, something that will give it a much nicer look and make it seem less depressing (the settings list has also been revamped with a nicer layout.

WhastsApp_background_set

Another major change is the ability to set a custom notification tone, a feature that was made possible by Update 3 for WP; under the settings you have the option to set a custom tone for both group messages as well as individual chats, meaning we can finally do away with the standard Windows Phone notification noise (it can get VERY confusing if sitting with more than one person who has a WP).

Custom_whatsappThere isn’t an expected release date for these features just yet, but hopefully we’ll be seeing them soon

Windows Phone 8.1 outfoxes Android’s navigation bar

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 03:00 PM PST

It was almost three years ago Nokia announced the Nokia N9, it was the first smartphone to come without physical or capacitive buttons, it was a financially sound decision where making smartphones without hardware or capacitive buttons will be way cheaper and easier to do.

galaxy-nexus-lumia-800

Naturally Android soon followed suit with the Galaxy Nexus via the ICS Android update and later many Android handsets started using on screen navigation bars, sadly as Android is all about customization a limitless amount of navigation bars existed further fragmenting an already fragmented OS experience.

Android’s navigation bars took some screen real state too except in certain OEM apps, that real state was only brought back by rooted apps and custom roms both of which meant breaking warranty and being a little bit of a geek to achieve, it also wasn’t the prettiest looking solution.

Sony_Walkman-660x391-600x355

It was only on Android KitKat offered users the ability to see beyond the navigation buttons in the home screen, it also gave developers the option to let their apps go full screen without the bars via a mode called Immersive mode.

phpppjq67

Kitkat users still couldn’t enter that mode on their own though, Cyanogenmod added the option to go full screen to users but some apps and games would crash instantly upon forcing immersive mode on them.

Another problem I personally had with Android’s navigation bars is screen rotation blackout; in the moments it takes to switch from portrait to landscape, your access to the navigation buttons is gone,  you’d think that wouldn’t annoy anyone but it actually drove me crazy.

(Samsung insists on using hardware buttons still for the above reasons too)

Windows Phone was lagging behind other OSs for a while but it didn’t mean it wasn’t learning from Android’s mistakes, Windows Phone 8.1 the major update for WP8 handsets will also use virtual navigation bars for upcoming devices, so how did Microsoft implement its navigation bar?

virtual navigation bar

Well, we might not get a glowing theme matching navigation buttons (except on that horrid Huawei) but you’ll be able to set the navigation bar bellow the button to match your themes accent color.

If that’s too fun for your taste you can go with the always dark option! and if you’re one of the few who like using the Light theme the Match Background option will ease your sorrows.

[I can't shake the feeling that this option hints at new background options- fingers crossed-]

Virtual navigation bar options
Windows Phone 8.1 however understood the need to hide the navigation bar so instead of the developers enabled immersive mode, users could take matters into their own hands and actually hide the navigation bar immediately using a neat little arrow, WP8.1 also limited the search button responsiveness which will be a welcome change for old WP8s and a must for virtual on screen buttons.

Navigation buttons

I can’t believe how proud I am of what Windows Phone 8.1 update shaped up to be, its dauntingly beautiful that Microsoft introduced a completely thought out navigation bar while Android still didn’t manage to perfect its navigation bar three years after its debut!

Thank you WP team.

Upload files from browser from WP8.1, and another look at week view

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 02:22 PM PST

11

As part of the new WP8.1 features, it seems we are also finally getting file upload from the browser. This was a relatively new thing to iOS on my iPad too (though thanks to iOS7 and the constant reloading when I switch tabs, it has returned to being an unusable browser).

Also, here’s a look at week view with entries put in.  It’s nice that it’s here but it looks disappointing. Will it look better in landscape view?

Nokia Goes Green for Valentine, Hinting at an Android Powered Phone?

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 02:00 PM PST

1511064_745728258779445_424293820_nIf you head over to any of Nokia’s social networking mediums (Twitter, Facebook) for almost all regions that have entered February 14th have been plastered with green… A very “Android” like green. It’s possible Nokia are making a very subtle hint at a certain upcoming device that’s going to be powered by Android. It definitely isn’t the most far fetched of ideas, given how much Nokia love to tease their followers; after all green has never been a strong color in the Lumia palate, or even the Ashas, and the unified colors all around along with the lack of any explanation make for a strong case. What do you guys think? Plausible?dcbe8039e714d2e57ffb46a117a436173ce0f4dbc2ded7d7219133a958232529 7d8f12a0454626da4ccb6b666e89641b

Video & Gallery: Nokia Lumia 1320 Unboxing and Impressions

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 05:39 AM PST

2Along with the super-specced and super-large Lumia 1520 comes a second phablet, one that’s a bit more reasonable in terms of specs; making it more affordable, the Nokia Lumia 1320. This is our unboxing.

http://youtu.be/EDsvHahncD8

1The Lumia 1320, similar to the 1520 is a 6″ beast, with a 720 p display instead of the Full HD 1080p one in the 1520, the 1320 clocks out with a ppi of 245, which is acceptable for the intended price-range of the device. The screen is an LCD IPS Gorilla glass 3 display, with Nokia’s amazing Clear Black display, meaning what it lacks in pixels it makes up for in actual display quality. 3

Inside the Lumia 1320 is well equipped to deal with the featherweight requests of Windows Phone, with a Dual core 1.7 Ghz Snapdragon S4 processor and 1 Gb of ram it essentially has the same processor as the Lumia 920 (which has a 1.5 GHz S4). 4

The 1320 has pretty much the same size and dimensions as the 1520, also sharing the same weight range (220 grams), meaning if you’re comfortable with one, you’ll feel at home with the other. In fact the slightly rounded back of the 1320 and curved corners make it more comfortable to hold in the hand.5

So far the lower ppi of the screen isn’t much of a deal breaker, in fact it actually looks quite crisp when its on; the only time I instantly noticed the lower resolution was when the sleeping screen came on and the clock showed jagged edges.

I’ll be sure to post more coverage of the Lumia 1320 as I play with it some more, but in the meantime if there’s something in particular you’d like to see please leave a comment below. 6 7 8 9 10 11 13

Inforgraph: Actual Screen Size Vs. Bezel

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 12:32 AM PST

BgM3tjwIQAAVXJzConsidering how Nokia haven’t had the best track record when it comes to properly utilizing screen real estate, here’s an interesting infographic showing how each phone compares in terms of actual display to bezel percentage. The Lumia 1520 does pretty good at 71.2%, only a few percentages bellow the LG G2 which has a full width screen with no side bezel; and I must admit the proper space utilization on the 1520 is great, as it keeps the actual phone size to a minimum (well as minimum as possible when you’re dealing with a 6″ screen). The Lumia 1320 also fares quite well with an acceptable 70.25, however after that it gets pretty horrible, with the 920 at 60.4% and the 1020 at 59.8% (thank god the Lumia 800 isn’t up there).

Hopefully with WP 8.1 and its on screen buttons we’ll see less and less bezel, and more screen utilization; something I’m sure many of you would appreciate (although I fear the toll on durability of devices would take a hit).
