Video: Nokia Lumia 920 vs Samsung Galaxy SIV

Posted: 05 May 2013 04:00 PM PDT

nokia lumia 920 vs sgs4Check out this 11 minuteside by side comparison between the (now 6 month old as reviewer points out) Nokia Lumia 920 and Samsung Galaxy S4.

I was surprised at the intro when I heard the reviewer mention some downsides of both phones that even with all that heft of processing power in the SGS4, it is still branded as “a bit sluggish”. Sluggish?! Octa core stuttering vs dual core…hmm…

The SGS4 picks up some Nokia Lumia 920 qualities (sensitive screen, lenses like cinemagraph and the multiaction one and wireless charging though not out of the box) and adds a few ‘features’ of their own (some of which are gimmicky and still need better implementation like hover gesture, eye scrolling – though I do like the video pausing when you look away). Note, these gestures, however they’re implemented remind me of those really ancient front-facing camera gestures from old Symbian phones, no? (I forget the name of the app).

Apparently the difference between 1080p (5″ pentile AMOLED and 720p (4.5″ LCD )is not noticeable. The design is favoured on the lumia, nicer, also more robust, but they don’t like the weight (vs the lighter, but flimsier plastic ‘dated’ SGS4).

p.s. when can we have notification LEDs again please? Also do we want infra red back? What about thermometers? ;p (maybe not the last one)

The Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone Smartphone War Wedding Video was a bit of a hit. Over 4 million views so far. Here’s a look at the behind the scenes making of that video.

The aim was to let the audience know there’s a legitimate third choice out there, Engadget’s Winner of Reader’s Choice for Best Smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 920.

Look at the description from Microsoft, “Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone.” Nokia Lumia 920 mentioned first. Differentiating it from the Windows Phone 8 Copypasta.

Weekend Watch: Octocopter, Nokia Lumia 920, Free Running

octocopterIt appears I seem to have missed this pretty cool video that was published mid-April (I can’t seem to find a post on it).

Nokia have strapped a Nokia Lumia 920 to some free runners as well as this insane looking contraption of an octocopter!

Aargh, my palms of my hands are getting sweaty and my feet all tingly watching these guys jumping into various near death situations.

FM Radio support coming soon in Nokia Lumia 520

nokia care chat

Whilst the hardware is there, the FM Radio in WP8 Lumias still requires activation. Back in March we heard that amongst many other neat additions (double tap to wake, always on clock etc) FM Radio is coming too.

Nokia Care Chat appears to have confirmed at least that in the future, updates would allow FM Radio function.

520

After only being recently available, the Nokia Lumia 520 is already the top WP device in India with 16.9% of devices according to data from adduplex.

Look how much of this is Nokia.

The Nokia Lumia 520 is a fantastic offering. It’s not a high end flagship, but it is one of the best priced, value for money smartphone experiences available today.

Walmart’s Insane Pricing of the Lumia 521 at $129 has it Sell-Out Within the Hour

Posted: 05 May 2013 09:47 AM PDT

image14People thought that the Lumia 520 when announced with a suggested retail price of 140 Euros was unbelievable, in that case the Walmart price on the Lumia 521 is downright insane. Priced at $129 (98 Euros!!!) the phone sold out within the hour on Walmart’s online store, hopefully a great omen of things to come. Technically the 521 is supposed to deliver the same great  consistently smooth WP8 performance that comes with the 620 and 720; meaning that it isn’t your normal end of the run $100 android; for reference here’s a list of the unlocked phones you can get under the $130 mark:

MNBwp_ss_20130504_0003

This post was initially just about an update to the PDF Reader app (alternative one that we have posted about frequently) as it now has quite a bit of improvement, including an orientation lock so e.g. you can read sideways in bed in landscape without the screen rotating back to portrait (or whatever you might need it for).

Additional updates include:

  • Facebook Beta
  • Ice Age Village
  • Flashlight-X
  • WNM-Live

Nokia Canada Promising “the next chapter of music discovery” on May 15th

Posted: 05 May 2013 01:06 AM PDT

DSC022861 (1)It seems like May is Nokia month, with the announcement of a 3rd Nokia related event scheduled for this month (the 9th in India and the 14th in London); plus of course the 928 launch whenever that is. Nokia Music are promising an important announcement to be held on the 15th where they will explore "the next chapter of music discovery".

I’m not sure if Mix Radio is currently available in Canada, if it isn’t then this is quite probably a Nokia/Mix radio launch.
