Video: The Best unboxing ever – Nokia Lumia 920 unboxed and shown off in epic badass cinematic style

Posted: 13 Mar 2013 05:10 PM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-03-14 at 00.00.30Modestly titled “Terrible Unboxing” this is in actual fact, the best unboxing ever of a Nokia device I’ve ever seen. Heck, it’s the best unboxing of anything I’ve ever seen. You get the usual, quick look at what’s in the box, but the main theme of it is badass movie style in the way it shows off the features of the 920 better than any Nokia promo in the past.

I like the use of Nokia memes, ladies, play on words, guns, explosions, tons and tons of humour and super high production value. The Lumia 920 OIS bike scene, oh that killed me with laughter. Very memorable ways of presenting these features from Nokia. Ha, NFC tags.

I urge you to watch it. Major kudos to the folks behind this video.

Leaked Photo Sample from Lumia 928. Update: Picture Removed.

@evleaks just posted a link to the image above; stating that it was taken with a Nokia Lumia 928. According to the Exif data on the image it was indeed taken with a Lumia 928, running Windows Phone; the claim is solidified by the fact that the person who posted it appears to work at Nokia according to his G+ profile.

The photo has been removed from the Picasa link, luckily we were fast enough to get a screenshot of the Exif data (you can’t hide on the internet).

*The photo above is the original image and not a screenshot; for those of you interested in a closer look.

54eac1398ca03bd3c0a50ec0bd7a8783I must say I was really hoping for a larger aperture, something like the 720 with a f/1.9; is there a way to figure out how many megapixels were in the image?

Times of India crowns Nokia Lumia 920 as best smartphone camera too, against HTC Butterfly, Sony Xperia Z and BB Z10

Posted: 13 Mar 2013 08:57 AM PDT

1 920Joining the likes of Gizmodo, The Times of India’s camera smartphone battle has the Nokia Lumia 920 as their winner.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/personal-tech/gadgets-special/Nokia-Lumia-920-wins-smartphone-camera-battle/articleshow.

In our review, Nokia Lumia 920 was found to have the best smartphone camera in the market right now. Its low-light imaging capabilities are miles ahead of the competition and features like Cinemagraph add to the value of the package

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/02/19/nokia-lumia-920-wins-best-smartphone-camera-test-daylight-and-low-light-and-this-only-gets-better-for-nokia-at-mwc/

Big wins for ease of use, OIS, low light capture, low noise, and Nokia’s suite of lenses.

No mention of 808 here as it’s not available in the Indian market, no?

Cheers Aba for the tip!

Round up and More Nokia Lumia 928 Rumours (+Verizon rep mentions hearing about 12mp Lumia for a while)

Posted: 13 Mar 2013 06:39 AM PDT

So far, yesterday fleshed out some information about a possible Nokia Lumia 928 on Verizon.

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/03/12/aluminium-nokia-lumia-928-with-xenon-flash-coming-to-verizon-launching-in-april/

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/01/25/nokia-laser-flagship-lumia-wp8-coming-to-verizon/

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/03/02/lumia-928-shows-up-on-verizons-internal-servers-possibly-catwalk-920

  • Laser (codename)
  • Aluminium
  • 10.2mm at thinnest
  • Design more like the 720 (squared/angular look)
  • Curved back
  • A lot lighter than the 920
  • OLED screen, 4.5″
  • SV LTE
  • Same processor/RAM as 920
  • Xenon flash + LED
  • 8MP
  • due April launch.

A few more rumours have sparked.

On Reddit, someone reckons these are the supposed dimensions.

Screen Shot 2013-03-13 at 13.21.27

TheVerge does not mention but dimensions are: 133 mm tall, 68.9 mm wide

Believe me or not, I don’t care :)

The poster is quite prolific on Reddit technology related boards (not just WP). He says the dimensions are 133mm tall, 68.9mm wide. Rich compares that to the 920 which was 130.3mm tall and 70.8mm wide.

This next one comes from WPC forum. I’m not quite sure of the poster, but they seem to work closely with/for Verizon (WPC via WMPU)

When questioned about release dates:

Honestabebread”

Easter time. Verizon’s going to steer away from Android advertising until the S4 and whatever Moto launches in June. Spring is time for change, and the Z10 and the Windows Phones will be leading the pack.

You would not believe the conversations about Windows Phones that the financial departments are having. They’re about $100 cheaper to Verizon than Android phones, and about $150 cheaper than iPhones. This benefit will trickle down soon.

http://forums.wpcentral.com/upcoming-rumored-devices/218472-nokia-lumia-928-coming-soon-verizon.html

Additional info suggests

  • Multiple Colours (As you’d expect, given how Nokia’s all about the splash of colour
  • Possibly Less internal storage but…
  • Expandable storage
  • $550 of contract, $200 on contract unless subsidised further
  • Brand backing from Verizon, Verizon wants WP8 to succeed.
  • WP for customers who want easy to use smartphones. They apparently require less tech support.
  • Has apparently heard of a 12mp lumia for a while (in the work setting)

Honestabebread”

From what I’ve heard, it looks kind of like a bigger 8X, will be in white, black, cyan, and red, and will be 16GB + Micro SD

_________

It will probably be $550 off contract.

On contract price will be $200 unless Nokia works a deal. Verizon never gives away the farm because phone pricing has never hurt them. I don’t think the S3 has ever been less than $200.
That said, I’m pretty amazed at how long the 822′s been free, so maybe it will come out swinging.

It won’t have some massive party like the One or the S4 but it will be up on the website and junk.

__________

I know it doesn’t seem like it, and I wish I could provide documentation without getting fired, but VZW really, honestly, wants WP8 to succeed.

I attended a meeting where the head of finance for a whole region specifically told us to make sure there was a specific reason a customer was NOT getting a Windows Phone. For example, if someone just browses the web and emails, they want that person in a Windows Phone. The phones are just cheaper to the company. Less subsidy and less tech support costs.

___________

I think all of you guys are expecting it to be a large departure from the 920.

I would expect a 920 with less internal storage, an SD slot, a bit smaller frame and MAYBE a higher megapixel camera. I’ve been hearing about a 12 megapixel Lumia for about 6 months now.

Wireless charging, OIS, and the screen should all be the same. I’ve even heard guys say “Hey you hear we’re getting the 920?”

As for a release date, I might find out like a week before you guys. Tops.

MS job posting talks about Engineers testing WP9/W9 on Nokias?

Posted: 13 Mar 2013 06:11 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-03-13 at 13.01.50

It may or may not come as a surprise that MS are already working on the NEXT version of Windows, Windows 9 and Windows Phone 9.

Job postings from Microsoft detailed testing of W(P)9 on Nokia. I wonder what Family Room features on WP8 are? Note the listing says Windows Phone test service team, testing Windows 9 OS on Nokia (not Windows Phone 9). Could be a typo, or as speculated, another name change (as some people already call WP8 windows 8)

Anywhoo, we have heard recently that major updates will be compatible to current WP8 Lumias. That should be obvious but knowing what happened with WP7.5, it’s better to be safe and certain than sorry. Whether this update will be a 0.5 style update (e.g. 7.0 to 7.5 that does bring in some useful features), something quite major (like the Service Pack like Blue update that apparently will appear through the store to update things like the browser) or an actual full integer update, I don’t know.Screen Shot 2013-03-13 at 13.01.26Source: MsftKitchen.com via NeoWin

PureView vs UltraPixel (PV, Phase 2.) (PS, PureView v1 kicks Ultrapixel’s ass)

Posted: 13 Mar 2013 05:45 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-03-13 at 12.31.08

Yesterday, we talked about how PureView absolutely demolished the HTC One in terms of review praises for the camera. That was PureView V1.

I was elated when I got the tweet about PocketNow’s PureView vs UltraPixel test because the PureView V1 will just embarrass the competition.

Well, it wasn’t quite the 808 but it’s still PureView (v2)

http://pocketnow.com/2013/03/13/htc-one-vs-nokia-lumia-920-camera-comparison

I don’t think there’s any mention of the 808, although I do find it funny that there’s mentions of ‘large sensor sizes’ when talking about the HTC. (Question, how big is the sensor in the N95, announced 2006?)

Folks, it is NO Content. PureView vs UltraPixel. Side by side comparison will just be formalities.

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/03/12/theverge-calls-htc-one-ultrapixel-camera-mediocre-remember-nokia-808-pureview-as-astounding-breathtaking-stupefying/

We should add tests for zooming, cropping, super low light with flash and movement (people, the fan test etc).

If we’re speaking simply on terms of phone-camera performance, then the 808 with PureView V1 wins. We have to also think about practical terms. Even if PV1 was to come to Lumia, could the mass market stomach a hump? WP might be easier to stomach than Symbian, but can the masses handle all that extra lumps?

PocketNow warns Nokia to keep innovations flowing as the ultra-low light battle is no longer a once horse race. True. The 720 is pretty great in low light, as is the 808 :p.

Cheers Nabkawe5
