Lumia 920 Wins “Innovative Handset” of the Year Award 2013

Posted: 15 Mar 2013 10:08 AM PDT

nokia-lumia-920-award-01Nokia has been claiming the Lumia 920 is the “most innovative smartphone ever” for a while now. Well just in case you weren’t willing to take Nokia’s word for it, the Lumia 920 won The Mobile News Award for most Innovative Handset in 2012.

It’s nice to see that the 920 is getting the recognition it deserves.

Video: Jeremy (unpacked kid) off air – Nokia fighting talk tweets

Nokia’s twitter peeps have got a lot of fighting talk in their tweets. Their latest shares this funny video where the Samsung Unpacked kid actually has a Lumia :p (even funnier because a lot of the time in real life when promos are made, the actor/person is actually an iPhone user :/)

Anyway, here’s the video and below some of the recent Nokia tweets.

Copy back Nokia :p keep innovating but also bring in more hardware features users might want, regardless if it’s in another device first (though the ones that will actually have significant user appeal/usefulness and not just throwing things against the wall and seeing what sticks). Bring back irDA perhaps :p I miss the remote control app from my super old gen 1 Symbian phones.

Video: Lumia 920 Vs. Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung Galaxy S4 versus Nokia Lumia 920

As much as it annoys me, Samsung is the big dog right now; which means that a new device like the Galaxy S4 is what most people will be talking about for the next few days (or weeks).

Thankfully I was asleep when it was announced  but a quick run through of the specs does show some interesting features, mainly the ability to record from both the front and rear facing cameras at once (although it’s mostly a gimmick it would be cool to get yourself and your expressions into those videos), and I’ll be honest that super thin bezel is might fine looking (although I find the overall design repulsive).

Here’s a quick video comparison between the two by WPC (follow the source link for more images):

Nokia’s youtube channel just uploaded a video titled “Nokia Lumia 920 Low-light comparison – Don’t miss a moment” where in the end the guy with the 920 gets the pretty girls number; while the S3 user (or is that the S4 :P ) ends up with a dark mess.

New Nokia Lumia 620, 820 & 920 Firmwares live on Navifirm

I just hit post about the new firmwares out for the Lumia 620, 820 & 920, and decided to check if Navifirm had anything. It seems like it does. All the devices have multiple (I think all) variants of the firmware update available. Either this means the roll out is sooner than we think, or someone uploaded them to the servers prematurely.

My Lumia 820 is undergoing a flash as we speak, so I will detail the changes I notice shortly!

Nokia Lumia 620, 820 & 920 shipping with Updated Firmware; Updates for exisiting devices coming later

Posted: 15 Mar 2013 12:23 AM PDT

No Updates

I just noticed a tweet coming from Nokia Developer with regards to some updates for the Lumia 620, 820 & 920. It appears that the devices are being shipped with updated firmwares to what is currently available. (This makes sense as we have seen some new features demoed on new handsets).

The new Lumia 820 and 920 firmware version will be 1232.5957.1308.00xx where xx is simply the handset variant. This is said to include:

  • further performance and stability improvements
  • enhancements to display stability during a call
  • improved automatic display brightness adjustment

The Lumia 620 will have the new firmware numbered 1030.6407.1308.00xx (same deal with the xx). The update for the Lumia 620 will bring:

  • improved touch behavior
  • enhancements to system stability
  • enhanced camera picture quality, such as corrected camera exposure when the flash is used in bright light conditions

Here’s what the blog post had to say:

As part of Nokia's continuous development practice, we will be introducing new software updates for Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820. This software, version 1232.5957.1308.00xx, includes further performance and stability improvements, enhancements to display stability during a call, and improved automatic display brightness adjustment.

In addition, Nokia Lumia 620 has some new software in the pipeline. This software, version 1030.6407.1308.00xx, will include improved touch behavior and enhancements to system stability and camera picture quality, such as corrected camera exposure when the flash is used in bright light conditions.

We are starting to deliver the latest software on new Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 smartphones now. Current users of these smartphones will be receiving the updates to their phones later. In case you haven't updated your phone software before, see this Nokia support page for useful instructions on how to receive and install an update on your Nokia Lumia phone.

Hopefully this will be the update that will bring the fix for other storage, as well as a few issues that seem to still be around on a few devices (like my Lumia 820 randomly rebooting).

I guess it’s in a timely manner, post S4 announcement but of course, this could apply to more than just Sammy.
