Windows Phone 7.8 Rollout Resumed; Live Tile Bug Hopefully Fixed Posted: 14 Mar 2013 11:25 AM PDT After a brief pause in the WP7.8 rollout due to a bug that lead to some Live tiles crashing or not updating; @Nokiahelps has just tweeted that the rollout has been officially resumed. Hopefully that also means that more devices will get it, seeing how a lot of users are yet to revive it (including many At&t users who should have been the first to receive it).
So have you got it? |
Nokia Updates Have Permission to Modify Root Storage in WP8? Posted: 14 Mar 2013 11:17 AM PDT I’ll be honest; I’m not exactly sure exactly what the screenshot above means. As I was updating my Lumia 820 (it suddenly decided to receive a billion updates from Nokia- 1, 2, 3) I noticed the weird text at the top of my app drawer. “@C:\Data\Programs\….” which sounds a lot like what I see on my PC, these came up every time one of the Nokia feature apps were being updated, such as Display & touch, Network +, Extras + Info.. I’m not sure exactly what this means, besides the fact that a lot of these bug fixes and improvements that have been coming from Nokia are accessing the root storage and modifying system files on WP, and maybe even the chance of future proper file management? But then again I really don’t know much about how this stuff works to be honest.

Video: Stunning video made using Nokia’s Here Maps 3D data Posted: 14 Mar 2013 10:06 AM PDT A couple of years ago when we saw Nokia Maps 3D, we were in total awe of what Nokia managed to achieve. Whilst it’s a shame they did nothing with it in terms of bringing it to consumers in the masses, especially on mobile, props on Nokia for enhancing location services with their range of location apps. In the video below, someone created a cinematic film using Nokia Maps or should we say, Here Maps 3D. It’s like the fly-over feature that was used by CNN at the Royal Wedding (using Nokia Maps) and later integrated by Apple into their maps (though, they did it so badly they had to publicly apologize for it) It looks very realistic, appearing either like real life footage or some high quality video game. For the next step, it would be cool to see someone use similar fly-overs and integrate it with normal footage to create a minifilm.

Video: Audio Comparison – Nokia Lumia 620 against competitors Posted: 14 Mar 2013 09:54 AM PDT Although the Nokia 620 is priced as an entry level smartphone, it has high end experiences and features like Rich Recording which pricier members of the competition don’t have. In the video below, Nokia compares the audio and video from the 620 against competitors. No wonder there’s been so much praise and love in the blogosphere for the Nokia Lumia 620.

HERE Drive + Updated; Brings Favorites Sync Across All Map Apps and More Posted: 14 Mar 2013 09:52 AM PDT One of issues with the previous version of Nokia/Here maps was the fact that it didn’t sync my favorites between Drive and Maps; meaning that I couldn’t find my “Home” location unless I saved it twice, one in Maps and once in Drive. Thankfully that has now been fixed in the latest Drive update along with some “customization options” (I think there are also some UI changes, like the favorites marker on the map itself). You can grab the latest version from here: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/here-drive-beta/9a0f7585-9f16-47d5-8041-28018fcea606

Lumia 928 Pops up on Verizon’s Servers again; This time in Red, White, Black and Cyan Posted: 14 Mar 2013 07:25 AM PDT We previously saw the Lumia 928 make its appearance on Verizon’s internal severs a couple weeks ago; this time its popped up again in multiple colorful variants of white, red, can and black. I think Verizon will push the red most seeing how it’s their signature color, hopefully yellow will be added to the mix as well for the adventurous of us. Of course the 928 is rumored to be an aluminum built device, which means the colors might not be an exact ringer to its polycarbonate brother the 920; especially if Nokia use the same method of “coloring” used in the N8 (and ipods) called anodizing- informational video below. |

AAS has performed a couple shootouts recently. Check out how the 2010 N8 is going against that 2013 Sony.
As we have said before in previous comparisons, whilst we highlight and acknowledge how awesome Nokia’s camera’s have been, we must also consider some other factors for the fullest smartphone experience for the larger, mass market. The OS, is it something users can rely on and get along with easily? The build, can they cope with the weight, the size, the thickness? For the cameraphone fanatic, they won’t mind very much and will be willing to compromise for the best performing camera quality. For others, a great camera is a nice big plus but they’ll also want a rounded experience too. Great marketing as well as other factors for sales performance are also important but that’s another article all together. |
Babbel gives 11 Language learning apps for free on WP8 Posted: 14 Mar 2013 02:35 AM PDT Engadget’s Darren Murph who writes about this story says he’s had a positive experience with Babbel’s language learning service. I’ve not tried it before but positive experience from other notable users is good to hear. In the store, it mentions that these are lesson 9. Engadget spoke with a Babbel spokesperson who says the apps “are mainly vocabulary trainers with 3,000 words broken down into themed lessons”
These ones are really just for learning vocabulary. You’ll need to register for free if you haven’t already got a log in to unlock the rest of the vocab. It speaks the words for you which is nice, but then it also has a “deep learning” bit where it shuffles the words and you have to pick out what is the correct word. I’ve already learnt what a locksmith is (la serrurière?). I wonder if they’ll bring a Finnish one out? Or possibly the full suite where you’ll learn phrases?
