Quick and dirty camera comparison Lumia 920 and Lumia 925

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT

This far from scientific and probably even further from a proper camera comparison, but this is one thing I was personally very interested in. How does the Lumia 925 camera compare to the 920?

Lumia 925

Full size picture from the Lumia 925

Unfortunately I don't have a Lumia 925 on hand, but luckily my fellow writers Ali, Michael and blog owner Jay do have one to play with. The pictures you see in this post are courtesy of our resident cookie lover Ali. Normally I wouldn't post this up as it is Ali's material, but the difference between the two phones just got me excited.

As the post title suggest, this is really quick and deserves a far better follow up, but I'll leave that to Ali or Jay. There are, however, some pretty significant differences to be seen already between the 920 and 925. Just looking at colour and detail says enough. The image is far truer to what your own eyes would see, better detail and all in all more pleasant to look at even though these images were taken inside with the night setting in.

100% crop from the Lumia 920 on the left and the 925 to the right.

This small and quick comparison has made me wanting more, I'm especially interested in seeing how outside pictures with large viewing distances will turn out. Is there anything in particular you, our reader(s), want to see from the 925?

T-Mobile Set To Announce the Lumia 925 on July 10th, Calls it “Their Boldest Moves Yet”

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 12:28 PM PDT

Tmo_PressIn contrast to Nokia’s more recent strategies of rolling out devices to the US first then the rest of the world  a month or two later; the Lumia 925 is yet to hit US shores. That’s set to change soon enough as T-Mobile have sent out press invites for an event being held on the 10th of July with the tagline Our Boldest Moves Yet.

The usage of the plural S is most interesting, perhaps they have a number of WP devices to announce? Or maybe just the 925 alongside a couple androids or something. Hopefully we’ll hear something about the sales numbers of the Lumia 521, which so far has shown to be a hit selling out almost immediately whenever it becomes available (psst, you can still get one one off Amazon for $129 provided you wait a week or two).

So any of you guys planning on grabbing one of these hot aluminum babies?

Stephen Elop Receives “European Communication Award”

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 12:26 PM PDT

DSC02029Love him or loathe him, Elop has left his footprint on the history of Nokia, making what can safely be described as the most drastic change in Nokia’s history (short of switching from a rubber company to a phone manufacturer). Apparently Elop has been awarded with the European Communication Award for 2013 which:

honours outstanding communications achievements on a European level, and is given to the individual or organisation whose communication efforts over the past year stand out on a European level.

The reason stated for bestowing him with this reward was:

Stephen received the award in recognition of his unique communication style and commitment to which always puts his employees and customers opinions first.

In a way I can see how the “customers opinion” is true to some degree, sure not many wanted WP but in terms of the little things there has been some noticeable feedback response. Such as the Lumia 925 shedding weight and bulk after the Lumia 920 was picked on for those factors, plus the increased response time for bug fixes and maintenance.

AndroidCentral prefers Nokia design when it comes to Wireless chargers

Android Central had a Wireless Charging showdown which included the Nokia Wireless charging plate. I agree in the cons that I would have liked a standard MicroUSB power input rather than the odd pin one that they have.

Reddit has the answer for that it seems:

Anyway, the winner amongst these is of course, Nokia. Moreover, Nokia has multiple designs when it comes to Wireless chargers (Stand/Fatboy pillow/Car charger) and no doubt they have even more in the design room.

Joe Belfiore just tweeted asking folks to update their ratings on the Facebook app update. The update turns the Metro looking facebook app into what the Facebook Beta one looks like. You’ll need to sign in again btw after updating.

Joe says the next update is already coming on Friday. I dunno if he’s saying to keep FB Beta as that’s what will be updated?

GSM Arena reports on KantarWorldpanel’s latest findings of marketshare. They say Android continues to dominate but WP is closing in on iOS.

GSMA notes an avearge growth of about 2.5%. Here’s the post from last month for comparison.

Video: White Nokia Lumia 925 intrigues White Swan (1080p outdoor cloudy/windy sample)

I found a couple of videos that I also took today near the hospital duck pond. The White Swan was certainly intrigued of the gleaming white Nokia Lumia 925 immediately swimming up and asking some questions. Dear Swans of UK, the White Nokia Lumia 925 is exclusive to O2.

Video + Gallery: Another Lumia 925 Unboxing ( + Arabic Unboxing)

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 06:19 AM PDT

DSC03189You guys probably saw Jay’s unboxing of the 925 earlier this week and his unboxing video; well in case you felt the need for more aluminum beauty look no further. After all I can’t let Jay have all the fun now can I?

I also did a second unboxing in Arabic if anyone is interested:

And of course here’s the Flickr gallery with a couple glamour shots and comparisons with the Lumia 920:

My first thoughts on the device would have to be that I actually feel bad for thinking it was sort of “ugly”; I’ll admit at the launch I was not impressed (and mentioned that in a couple comments/posts here). Truth is the phone is incredibly beautiful, the design is pretty awesome (even my iPhone loving brother agrees), and the polycarbonate back isn’t tacky as I first assumed, instead it seems to give it a bit more “character”. I was honestly hoping for a black device, but I must say the matte white finish looks amazing, I’m starting to wish my stormtrooper was matte instead of glossy white.

For some reason I was under the impression that the actual back plate was interchangeable to switch out the colors, but apparently it’s not… The Amoled screen gives the colors a nice vibrant pop, however it does unfortunately “show” that it’s a pentile display, not as bad as the 800/N9 mind you; but it was a bit disturbing at first.

One interesting thing is how the camera hump keeps you aware of where your fingers are at all times, it took me awhile to adjust to keeping my fingers above/below the hump rather than over it (which I guess is how I hold my 920); but the hump certainly does give you the impression (placebo effect?) that the phone you’re carrying is an imaging beast… and I like it.

(I knew I had seen the 925′s color scheme somewhere)

925 BEE 2

I was walking back from a meeting with my supervisor, not really intending on having a ‘photo day’ to test out the Nokia Lumia 925 yet as I’ve got a mountain of coursework I’d like to finish first, when out popped some bees.

I was really surprised at how nice the pictures came out, especially since I barely had to stop walking to take them. I stopped for a couple of minutes more to snap some pics and I think they look great.

The first above is actually a crop (mainly to have a smaller bandwidth thumbnail). I thought it came out quite nicely. Click to view in fullscreen, I think they look even better over a large 1080p display. These are the original images below.

The bees oddly didn’t mind the Nokia Lumia 925 being there to take pictures.

Or videos:

There’s another bee here somewhere…

I took this whilst jogging to badminton on Saturday. I think I was mid slow jog, no stopping. OIS helped a lot.

Experience Europe through the Lumia 925′s 6 lenses #FaroVision

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 04:30 AM PDT

MNB IMG_9791 Nokia lumia 925

As Jay mentioned the other day, I am travelling Europe this month (in fact by the time this is published, I will probably be somewhere over the Indian Ocean). Nokia has generously provided me with a Lumia 925 to document my trip, and of course show off its awesome imaging capabilities.

I’ll be posting the pictures to my flickr and twitter (using the #FaroVision hashtag coined by @MobileNova) during the journey, and when its all over, I will be posting a gallery here.

What I’m also wanting to do is get you guys involved as well. By using the MNB group on flickr, I want people to upload images they have taken on their Nokia’s (doesn’t need to be a Lumia) of sights/monuments in their city, or when they’ve been travelling. The most common camera used on holidays is your phone, so why not have a way to showcase it with a whole bunch of Nokia fans!

Happy snapping everyone!
