My Issues With Windows Phone 8- One Month On Posted: 11 Jan 2013 01:24 PM PST I’ve just realized that today marks exactly one month with my Lumia 920, happy anniversary. With the time I’ve spent with my 920 I completely love it, the design is beautiful (as always), the minor build quality issues that were present in previous version have been rethought (specifically the metal plating around the camera on the back of the phone). But on a software side WP8 is a mixed bag, although it brings some great new (much needed) features, it does that on the cost of stability and performance that made me fall in love with WP7, so here’s a quick list of flaws I think need refining or fixing in WP8/Lumia 920 on the software side. *Note not all of these are real issues; but this is what bugs ME in Windows Phone 8 (some of it might seem like nitpicking but then I guess I’m a nitpicker)
After re-reading this it would seem that I completely hate WP8; but I don’t I’m just very critical of the phones I use (see you can be critical of something you love, and not every criticism means you hate something), but I honestly love the 920 it just needs some *tweaking*. |
Posted: 11 Jan 2013 11:27 AM PST If you follow the whole app story around Windows Phone the most heard argument is the lack of premium apps from large companies, like Instagram. This isn’t news about them finally releasing an app for WP but it is about GoPro getting ready to launch an app for Windows Phone 8. It's hard to not know GoPro, but for those of you who never heard of it. They are basically the most well known company that makes small rugged camera's for outdoor purposes, adrenaline junkies or any other use where a regular camera just won't fit or can get destroyed. Once you’ve seen them you’ll notice them everywhere. Much like Nokia, they have some pretty good image quality going on, albeit only for outdoor use, indoors nearly every GoPro sucks. To get an idea of what those cameras are capable of take a look below at the awesome Hero 3 promo vid. Anyway, this isn't about GoPro but about them making an app for Windows Phone. The app is already available on Android and iOS and it lets you connect with your GoPro and see what it is filming (no LCD for that on the device itself) or change settings. The app will only work with the new Hero 3 camera's and should also work with the Hero 2, but only if you have a WiFi bacpac on it. No release dates were given out, but WP central were told that GoPro expect to release it somewhere towards the end of February. |
“Network +” Update for WP8 Available Posted: 11 Jan 2013 11:10 AM PST I just got an update on my 920 called “Network+” which brings “additional settings to ensure you get the most from your mobile network and your phone” . I’m not sure exactly what’s new besides the name change from “Call + SMS settings” to “Network +”, possibly more text language support? Anyways on a side note it is really nice to see all these little updates and fixes constantly coming (at least one or two a week), which means that now Nokia or MSFT can deliver minor changes and bug fixes individually without having to wait for a large rollout. |
Chat With Juha Alakarhu; Nokia’s PureView Magician Posted: 11 Jan 2013 10:52 AM PST Although a lot of people seemed to have linked Pureview and Nokia imaging to Damien Dinning (who joined Jaguar late last year) there’s a whole lot more to Nokia’s imaging team. WPC had a sitdown with Juha Alakarhu at CES and chatted about PureView and the 920 and others; below are some of the interesting points that were mentioned, but be sure to check out the full talk over at WPC. - WHy are there so few camera setting options on the 920? to keep it simple for the user. This is in contrast to the 808 Pureview, which has three different modes for taking photos and each with a corresponding group of settings -Thoughts about variable aperture in mobile photography? Nokia does not see physical variable apertures happening anytime soon due issues with sharpness and other complications. -Optical zoom anytime soon? Nokia doesn't seen physical zoom lenses coming anytime soon to our mobile phones. Instead, they'd rather concentrate on things like the 808 Pureview and its 41MP sensor. With that many megapixels, cropping a small portion of the image still results in an astounding image and cropping is technically a form of "zoom". Because it has no moving parts and it can be manipulated in post-processing, Nokia is betting on that technology over a physical moving lens for the immediate future. *that last question has got me thinking about the future of pureview, everything points to more oversampling in the next Pureview! Swype Beta For S^3 & S60 Updated at Beta Labs Posted: 11 Jan 2013 10:36 AM PST Swype was definitely my favorite way to enter text in Symbian (until it was never updated to show your text box while typing); but for those faithful to swype will be glad to hear that the beta version at the Nokia beta labs has just received an update.
Pick up the update by heading to the beta labs page on your phone, or downloading the .sis file and installing it from here: http://betalabs.nokia.com/trials/swype-for-symbian/download_and_installation

Video: Quadrocopter Nokia Lumia 920 launch (vs SGSIII) Posted: 11 Jan 2013 12:34 AM PST
The first video this morning comes from the Nokia Lumia 920 launch in India. It shows off the Nokia Lumia 920 on a Quadrocopter against the SGSIII. The result is played back, with the obvious winner going to the optically stabilised Nokia.
