Screen Shot 2013-01-25 at 00.14.52It’s less than a month to go before folks fly out to Barcelona ready for MWC 2013. Notable keynote speakers of course includes Stephen Elop for Nokia, but another (ex)Nokia person, Marc Dillon who is now CEO of MeeGo based Jolla Mobile.

If you’re not sure what Marc looks like or sounds like, here he is talking about Sailfish.

Nokia Laser, Flagship Lumia WP8 coming to Verizon?

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 04:00 PM PST

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 23.57.10Tom Warren from TheVerge reports that a Nokia Lumia 920 like device is headed over to Verizon, codename, Nokia Laser. It’s also supposed to debut alongside codename Nokia Catwalk, the Aluminium bodied Lumia.

Microsoft is said to be backing Verizon’s Nokia Laser very heavily.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/24/3912250/nokia-laser-verizon-windows-phone-8

As a high end flagship for Verizon, the Nokia Laser will be marketed alongside rival top tier devices. As it should.

Nokia’s Turn To Pay Microsoft; Licencing Fees Now Greater Than $250 Million Quarterly Donation

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 09:16 AM PST

DSC01507One of the bright sides of Nokia joining the Windows Phone entourage was the fact that Microsoft agreed to shell over a quarter of a billion dollars per quarter. This effectively had given Nokia an edge over all other WP OEMs seeing how for the past year they were operating at an almost no cost expense to use Windows Phone; or in fact were making money by using the platform.

However with the increase in Lumia sales (4.4 Million) the tides have turned, seeing that the amount of software royalties Nokia has to pay has for the first time exceeded the 250 Million quarterly payout by Microsoft; but this is a small price to pay for success; one that Nokia can now afford seeing how they’re officially in the black again.

Also it’s likely that Nokia will be receiving a bit more payout in the future due to licensing Nokia Drive to other WP8 OEMs; which should once again give them an advantage over other OEMs.

Of course this could explain why Nokia are interested in continuing to produce WP 7.X devices (such as the 505 and the 510 etc.) seeing how the licensing fees are sure to be less than those for WP8.

Symbian Era Officially Over, Nokia Announces 808 Was The Last Symbian Device

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 04:19 AM PST

DSC01490

Along with Nokia’s quarterly earning today they also slipped in a little nugget of information; something all of us knew, but most were secretly hoping wasn’t so. In the sales report they confirmed that the 808 Pureview was and shall remain the last Symbian device from Nokia.

Perhaps a fitting end for Symbian though, the one device that pulled it together (in most places), and till now remains unchallenged in the imaging arena; perhaps making way for a Lumia brethren with the same sensor?

During our transition to Windows Phone through 2012, we continued to ship devices based on Symbian," the company wrote. "The Nokia 808 PureView, a device which showcases our imaging capabilities and which came to market in mid-2012, was the last Symbian device from Nokia

Now that Nokia is officially in the black again perhaps in a few years once they got their ship in order they can build up a new side project for the Symbian/Meego loyal? But for now hold course I say.

Farewell Ducky.

Nokia Will Not Pay Dividend to Investors For the First Time in 143 Years

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 04:00 AM PST

Nokia+logo,+Helsinki,+Finland+87570Earlier today Nokia published their Quarterly earnings for Q4 2012; announcing that they’re back in black with $585 Million dollars in profit. Q42012 is the first time in almost 2 years (7 Quarters exactly) that Nokia has netted a profit; Nokia’s choice to not pay dividend to investors is a strategy to assure people they know they still have some work to do, according to analysts:

The dividend omission "is a very important step because it shows management is conscious of the work that is ahead," said Eric Beaudet, an analyst at Natixis Securities in Paris. "It's clearly a strong signal to the market that says 'Don't worry about our balance sheet, we'll do what it takes.'"

Nokia Q4 2012 Results: $585 Million Profit

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 03:12 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 11.09.47Bit of a nice headline at TheVerge. After several quarters of losses, Nokia seems to have recorded a profit of $585 Million ($10.83 Billion Revenue). Good (small) steps in the right direction no? As noted by the Verge, that’s significantly better than the 700M+ loss last quarter or the 1.2B loss last year (as part of the restructuring efforts). Nokia’s net cash rises from $4.7 Billion to 5.8 Billion.

Most of the profit, coming from, oddly enough, NSN.

Here’s the PDF document:

http://www.results.nokia.com/results/Nokia_results2012Q4e.pdf

Fourth quarter 2012 highlights:
Nokia Group non-IFRS EPS in Q4 2012 was EUR 0.06; reported EPS was EUR 0.05.

  • - Nokia Group achieves underlying operating profitability, with Q4 non-IFRS operating margin of 7.9%.
  • - Nokia Group strengthened its net cash position by approximately EUR 800 million sequentially, of which
  • approximately EUR 650 million was generated by Nokia Siemens Networks.
  • - Devices & Services Q4 non-IFRS operating margin improved quarter-on-quarter to 1.3%, due to an increase in
  • gross margin as well as a decrease in operating expenses.
  • - Nokia Siemens Networks non-IFRS operating margin improved quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year to a
  • 14.4% in Q4, the highest level of underlying operating profitability since its formation in April 2007, primarily
  • due to an increase in gross margin.

Full year 2012 highlights:
Nokia Group full year 2012 non-IFRS EPS was EUR -0.17; reported EPS was EUR -0.84.

  • - Nokia Group achieves underlying operating profitability, with full year 2012 non-IFRS operating margin of
  • 0.4%.
  • - Nokia Group ends 2012 with a strong balance sheet and solid cash position. Gross cash was EUR 9.9 billion and
  • net cash was EUR 4.4 billion, after incurring cash outflows related to restructuring of approximately EUR 1.5
  • billion and dividend payment of approximately EUR 750 million.
  • - To ensure strategic flexibility, the Nokia Board of Directors will propose that no dividend payment will be made
  • for 2012 (EUR 0.20 per share for 2011). Nokia's Q4 financial performance combined with this dividend proposal
  • further solidifies the company's strong liquidity position.

79.6 Million mobile phones

6.6 Million Smart devices.

There’s an odd split here though…(total 86.3M devices this quarter)

9.3 Million Asha Smartphones

4.4 Million Lumia Smartphones

2.2 Million Symbian Smartphones.

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 11.27.32

The Nokia Outlook:

  • - Nokia expects its Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin in the first quarter 2013 to be approximately negative 2 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. This outlook is based on Nokia's expectations regarding  a number of factors, including:
      • - competitive industry dynamics continuing to negatively affect the Mobile Phones and Smart
      • Devices business units;
      • - the first quarter being a seasonally weak quarter;
      • - consumer demand, particularly for our Lumia and Asha smartphones;
      • - continued ramp up for our new Lumia smartphones;
      • - expected cost reductions under Devices & Services' restructuring program; and
      • - the macroeconomic environment

Nokia continues to target to reduce its Devices & Services non-IFRS operating expenses to an annualized run rate
of approximately EUR 3.0 billion by the end of 2013.
- Nokia expects Location & Commerce non-IFRS operating margin in the first quarter 2013 to be negative due to
lower recognized revenue from internal sales, which carry higher gross margin, and to a lesser extent by a
negative mix shift within external sales.
- Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks expect Nokia Siemens Networks non-IFRS operating margin in the first
quarter 2013 to be approximately positive 3 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. This outlook is based
on Nokia Siemens Networks' expectations regarding a number of factors, including:

      • - competitive industry dynamics;
      • - the first quarter being a seasonally weak quarter;
      • - product and regional mix;
      • - expected continued improvement under Nokia Siemens Networks' restructuring program; and
      • - the macroeconomic environment.

Nokia Siemens Networks now targets to reduce its non-IFRS annualized operating expenses and production overheads by more than EUR 1 billion by the end of 2013, compared to the end of 2011. Nokia Siemens Networks previous target was to reduce its non-IFRS annualized operating expenses and production overheads by EUR 1 billion by the end of 2013, compared to the end of 2011.

Cheers Alvester for the heads up.

Jessica Alba can be seen above sitting next to Sigourney Weaver taking pictures on her Ivory White Nokia Lumia 920 at ‘Dior’s Show’ in Paris.

Even though the catwalk is the focus of the show, the focus of this camera man is Jessica and that wonderfully positioned 920.

Video: Official WP7.8 Update on Nokia Lumia 900 (AT&T)

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 02:45 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 10.40.09This is an almost 5 minutes hands on of the Nokia Lumia 900 with the official WP7.8 update from AT&T.

No surprises, you get the new tile set up, which I find a lot more functional than the old one. That’s what a lot of other users have mentioned too – it might not seem like it but it makes a big difference. You still get usable live tiles, but now things take up the size you want and gets positioned where you want. You see more but without things getting cluttered.

  • New Accent colors, matching Windows Phone 8, bringing the total to 20 + 1

  • Bing Wallpaper of the day, which will auto-update your lockscreen image. Sadly developers to not have access to this, meaning we don't expect 3rd party 7.8 apps to have this feature.

  • New boot screen with updated WIndows Phone logo

  • New Office logo, though OneNote is not a seperate app like in WP8

Cheers Munir for the tip!

I’ve not heard of the show, “Arrow” but it has a pretty high rating on IMDB. (I might start watching it). Anyway, the above screenshot was taken by Munir, who says it’s from Season 1 episode 11. You can see the new Nokia Lumia 920 with a very different incoming call screen.

Seems NeNoRmAl also caught the show, but with subtitles :) .
