Nokia 6600-esque device in Emirates Airlines Private Suite Posted: 28 Jan 2013 01:26 PM PST James Burland tweeted the above picture of the Emirates Airline Private Suite. What a sweet way to travel (pun intended…oh dear…) The first thing I noticed however was the device next to the coffee. What does it look like to you? I thought it had an uncanny resemblance to the Nokia 6600, albeit, now hulk-like/morbidly obese. It’s got the two tone colouring, as well as what looks like a joy stick with two soft keys on the side. If you tilt your screen to it squishes the image, it sort of just looks like a 6600 :p.

As Ali just posted, Portico is being rolled out to users in UK, Germany and Italy. I just assumed I didn’t have it yet as I was accustomed to a notification message telling me to update. I didn’t get that at all. After Ali messaged me about the update, I checked Settings>Phone update and checked for any updates. I wasn’t expecting anything but lo and behold, it begins to automatically update as soon as it found there was an update. I didn’t see if it mentioned what it was as I just left it in the background to reply to Ali and when I came back it was already downloading. It’s currently installing as we speak. Version before. Hurrah, update ready to be installed. It was stuck on 100%. I thought it would automatically do something but tapping it seems to have engaged it. If you postpone it, you can come back to it later so you can install it at your own convenience. The Phone is now restarting (21:07). Got some Cog action going on.
21:20 Hmm.. It’s now saying migrating Data. Now it’s done Or almost. It says it wants to restart one more time. Oh now it’s done.

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 12:31 PM PST The flood gates have been opened on Windows Phone 8′s first OTA update, as the first stream of update begins to roll out to unbranded devices in Italy and Germany; as well as Lumia 920′s in the UK from Everything Everywhere. Hopefully it won’t be much longer for us users in the rest of the world, but for now if you’re one of the lucky few get updating.

Videos: 3D Printing Functional Nokia Lumia 820 cases Posted: 28 Jan 2013 08:59 AM PST
With a bit of trial and error on the materials for 3D Printed Nokia Lumia 820 covers, imaterialise found one that looks good, but has functional buttons. They went from materials that may be too brittle, to ones that are strong but the buttons are too hard and don’t work (as they’re on the case). They found the solution, which was to double print (as well as do a bit of engineering). The result was functional buttons that also looked good with the two tone design. I also liked the clear resin – hopefully there’ll be a dual printed version with working buttons (that they say is very good, nice and easy to push – btw, 820′s buttons feel much nicer than my 920s I think).

TVCatchup app for WP8 brings more Live Streams Posted: 28 Jan 2013 03:52 AM PST Well, hello there, TVCatchup app! I was rather excited to hear this app my friends love to use on their iPad is making its way to WP8 in the next couple of weeks. AAWP has the scoop as well as several screenshots.
You can use either WiFi or 3G/Mobile data to watch live streams. This means on the go TV when you’re away from home – make the most out of long train journeys (provided you have signal, though some trains have WiFi on board) .

Video: Four Finnish Professional Photographers and Nokia Lumia 920 – Nokia Suomi Posted: 28 Jan 2013 03:21 AM PST
A promo video from Nokia Finland. I think it’s about Pro Photographers taking a look at the Nokia Lumia 920.
This is roughly translated into:
I have no idea what they’re saying but it’s a very beautiful language to listen to. |
Nokia Conversations: The Graphene Initiative; Helping With New Lightweight Devices? Posted: 28 Jan 2013 02:55 AM PST I’ll be honest I don’t know much about graphene, in fact the first time I heard of it was on this blog last year when people were suggesting what new innovations could come with the N8′s successor, where the word “graphene sensor” was thrown around a lot. Well it seems Nokia have been working with graphene in some research, What’s so special about graphene? Well first of all it’s a material so thin that it’s classified as 2 dimensional (only one atom thick), yet still manages to be immensely powerful
But instead of me blabbing about it, check out this cool video explaining it:
Hearing all that makes me want a graphene bodied device right now, but I don’t even know if that’s possible? (how expensive is it?); regardless this article reminded me of the rumors of an aluminum bodied lightweight 920 sucessor that might show its face at MWC. Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but I don’t see why Nokia Conversations would post about it, unless they were somehow going to use it later?
