Unlocking Carrier Branded Cell Phone Now Deemed Illegal in USA Posted: 26 Jan 2013 05:33 AM PST One of the few advantages of living in Jordan is that no carriers brand and lock cell phones to their network. A law passed by the Library of Congress 3 months ago deemed it illegal to unlock a cellphone branded to a carrier in the US (think Lumia 920/900 on At&t). However it is still perfectly legal to have your carrier officially unbrand the cellphone, provided they agree of course. This does make it more difficult for people on other networks to get devices such as the 920, especially with the exclusivity deals Nokia has been striking. Thankfully there seems to be a variant of the Lumia 920 heading to Verizon soon, still it must suck to have even more to worry about next time you buy a phone.

WP8 Reference Design from MS coming Mid-2013 – Surface Phone? Posted: 26 Jan 2013 05:23 AM PST Digitimes repots that Microsoft is going to be launching a reference design WP8 device mid 2013. Not sure if they learnt the lesson regarding their “reference design” Surface tablet and how that irks other manufacturers rather than the intended “spur them to do better” The intention is apparently to expand the “ecosystem”. (Perhaps, MS, instead of twiddling your thumbs, you could put features in to WP8 that should be there already 2 years ago, eh? Or work with the top devs of app makers to make sure you haven’t got massive app gaps missing? Or other blatantly obvious things that you should have done but choose not to, instead feel content that users will be wowed away by your millionth demonstration of resizable tiles?). On the other hand, Jiipee reckons that this reference design could make it easier for smaller manufacturers to release WP devices. It is most ideal that for Nokia to grow, the Windows Phone ecosystem has to grow too. Nokia has its distinct set of applications, designs and imaging specialities to differentiate from the crowd. They’re also the go-to name for anyone wanting a Windows Phone (that’s still small right now but will hopefully grow sufficiently in the future). I’d like to see some slim, yet high end WP to grab the limelight originally stolen by the lumiawannabe 8X, in addition to some beastly Lumia flagships, like the rumoured Nokia EOS and Catwalk. I wonder if MS will try and grab some colourful Lumianess or go cold magnesium (which is quite attractive too) as seen in the Surface tablets. Cheers Jiipee for the tip! |

Cyan Lumia 920 Finally Back in Stock at Amazon Posted: 26 Jan 2013 03:46 AM PST The cyan Lumia 920 which has been out of stock at Amazon since the first batch of Lumias came in is finally back. You can pick it up for $99 on contract or $499 off contract from the link down below: Amazon Link: Nokia Lumia 920 4G Windows Phone, Cyan (AT&T) Also interestingly I noticed that Amazon wireless has upped the price of the 920 back to $99 from the previous $69.99 which is interesting to say the least. |
Serbia and Israel Finally Added to Nokia/Here Maps Posted: 26 Jan 2013 02:26 AM PST Although Here maps is pretty great it does lack severely in some countries; in fact it was non-existent in them, showing absolutely no mapping details at all. Now the folks at Nokia conversations have announced that a huge refresh to the mapping database took place, which most importantly added maps of Israel & Serbia. Also added/refreshed were 133,000 Km of roads in the UK alone (the gif above shows the new roads added/updated).
Turn by turn navigation will be available in Serbia and Israel in the upcoming weeks as well. If I recall correctly one of the few major countries left out of the mapping process as of this update is only Japan. Thanks for the tip incognito |
