Windows Phone 8 Lumias Launching Soon in Jordan (Rest of Middle East Too?) Posted: 14 Jan 2013 06:41 AM PST Nokia Jordan just posted this picture on their Facebook page accompanied with the caption “they’ll be here soon”….are you ready?”. Assuming the shoelaces represent the amazing everyday Lumias (at least the color scheme does); then they should be talking about the 920, 820 (and hopefully the 620). This is a big step for Nokia seeing how the first generation of Windows Phone devices never landed in the Middle east (except for a year late launch in Lebanon); the reason being the lack of Arabic support on WP7 devices. The rumored launch date is January 22nd, but there’s nothing solid to back that up. There is no price set currently, but some of the shops here who have grey market 920s are selling them for 550 JOD or about $770; so hopefully the price should be somewhere between 450-500 (about $630) which doesn’t sound too bad.

Video: UI-Concept – Harmattan meets Sailfish Posted: 14 Jan 2013 02:08 AM PST Stephen emailed me his UI concept, which blends elements of Harmattan and Sailfish. It looks nice, and makes me want to see more. The more I see Sailfish related things, the more I want to test it out. Hopefully with the SDK launching this quarter, we will see Sailfish ported to N9/50.

Tactile Keyboard Screens at CES (Oh where be Nokia’s Haptikos? :/) Posted: 13 Jan 2013 11:19 PM PST
This is not Nokia related directly, but it interested me because Nokia’s research has been working on ways to make flat touchscreens more tactile – the feel that there are buttons actually there even though there’s only a glass screen. There’s some variations on tactile feedback (as seen in several of Nokia’s touch screens) as well as future labs stuff of electro-tactile feedback that can give the illusion of textures under your finger. Another implementation is to actually have physical buttons that spontaneously appear (Nokia Morph esque?). You might have heard about this before but it’s nice to see it in action at CES. Not from Nokia but nice to see nonetheless. The video is over at BBC News. Watch the plain tablet and then later see the keyboard emerge. I’m not sure how dynamic the buttons can be (is it only at pre-defined positions? Or can they be anywhere?)
There’s definitely room for this. A lot of my hardcore BB user friends endure their BlackBerry not for anything else except the always there keyboard letting them text without looking at the screen. Whilst you can try this on a regular touch screen, it’s no where near as easy. I’m curious to know what these squidgy looking buttons feel like. Surprised to see more Nokia discussion. So true though. Nokia. They either innovate and don’t bring it out or innovate, bring it out and don’t advertise/make very low quantities. |
My Dream Nokia #80: Slider-Tilt QWERTY Aluminium Nokia Lumia Concept Posted: 13 Jan 2013 10:52 PM PST Instead of having a nice long sleep prior to exam, the 808 decided to wake me up with its low battery chime (I’m a light sleeper on exam days). But what nicer thing to wake up to than a nice new concept Nokia that makes me reminisce about some older ones. This one takes us back to the delightful N97 form factor (which was brilliant, not the actual use of it) that we saw later with the N97 mini, E7 and N950 (the latter of which showed how nice this overall form factor is with a useable, friendly UI) My Dream Nokia #80 is said to have a 4.5″ display that tilts out and partners with a slide out keyboard. The back is said to feature ‘Dual Xenon’ even though it’s LED. There’s also a 10mp camera with PureView. Oh yeah, the whole thing is Aluminium too.
The front design is somewhat (very ) iPhoney. But then again, I remember folks confusing my N97 at the time for an iPhone. Heck, people confuse my N9/800/900/920 for an iPhone. I guess any rectangle slab with round corners and a screen is iPhone. When closed or from behind, it reminds me much more of the N97 more than anything. But from front view and in two separate halves, it just looks like a sliced iPhone 5. I’d be more up for this form factor if it was more Fabula, no?
