Nokia and Microsoft working even closer, MS to raise Nokia visibility Posted: 11 Jun 2013 04:28 PM PDT   Engadget reports that Nokia and Microsoft are going to be working even closer. Nokia’s Ray Haddow says we’ll see fruits of this closer pairing in the next few weeks. Some query whether it’s new software or new services. Nokia has told Engadget that Nokia and Microsoft will work to raise Nokia’s profile. I think it’s working at least in the US. You can see MS is promoting not just WP features in Nokia Lumia, but Nokia specific features, such as imaging apps and camera functionality/performance exclusive to Nokia. It helps keep a unified image and brand, and doesn’t dilute the message by suddenly switching topic to HTC/Samsung who are mainly in the Android camp. Windows Phone is pretty much Nokia. Whilst it’s in WP’s best interest that as a growing OS to have multiple manufacturers, on the flip side, it’s also important to focus on a hero manufacturer that will act as the flagship brand too. Lumiappdates: Swapchat and Day Counter Posted: 11 Jun 2013 04:00 PM PDT   Swapchat and Day Counter just got updated. Swapchat is the number 1 Snapchat client and in this update it gets bug fixes, front camera fix and ability to draw on the photos (previously only text captions). Day Counter – I have a few of these pinned on my homescreen. Fantastic app that counts down how many days left till certain events. One in particular says 0 days as the Final exam is tomorrow. Anyway, Day Counter gets a new updated design, ability to pin all three tile sizes as well as support for higher resolution tile). The update is actually pretty cool. I needed to reinstall the app to make it work (possibly cos I had some old tiles from the old format? The developer emailed me back real quick to say they’re already working on a fix for that). Much neater interface. I like the countdown as well as telling ‘days since’ e.g. given up something. It has in app purchases for new colour options, ad removal and something called ‘streaks’ which I haven’t tried yet. One of my favourite apps. It’s free as well to download. V. interesting in app purchasing :)

N9Appdates: Nokia Link 3G Network compatibility fix Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:43 PM PDT MNB Reader, Raj shared us this screenshot of an update his Nokia N9 just received. Nokia Link which fixes some 3G connectivity issues. It’s an important fix as voice/data may stop working otherwise. Cheers Raj!

Last Symbian shipments this summer Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:16 PM PDT   FT.com reports that Nokia will stop shipping Symbian devices this summer. The Nokia 808 PureView was the last device Nokia had worked on with Symbian. Nokia had apparently said that it took them 22 months to get phones out with Symbian but less than a year with WP as they no longer have to tinker about with the deep-lying code and spend more time on elements that make a difference to experience. Full force now on WP (but then also Asha, which they kinda have to tinker with but possibly not to the same extent) Nokia may still support Symbian up to 2016 with updates and such. Source: FT.com. The latest results detail June or at least early June since we’re freshly into it. Nokia: Growing once again to 84% of all WP8 devices – helped by addition of 720 and 520 Growing to 83.3% of all WP devices Top handset in the world is supposedly the Nokia Lumia 920 amongst WP devices. WP8 now outnumbered WP7 in a much shorter timeframe. 70% in US, up from 65.9% 70% of WP devices are WP8 Top US device is 822 77% of all WP8 devices in US Verizon edges out AT&T as top WP network Italy – top 800 21.8% Germany – top 920 – 17.9% China – top 920 at 23.3% India – top 520 already at 20.8%. Since it has only just been launched, it seems to be doing quite well. not top, France has HTC 8S. In related news, this domination is apparently scaring some other manufacturers into joining WP. What’s the logic behind Nokia’s launch schedule? (Rant) Posted: 11 Jun 2013 05:33 AM PDT Just a few days ago we saw the sales launch of the Lumia 925 in Germany. There isn't much more to say about the 925 other than that it is an improved version of the 920. A good one in my eyes, after all it addresses quite a few 'problems' some smartphone buyers might have with the 920 like its weight and thickness. Considering the significant improvements and arguable better visual design of the 925 one would assume that Nokia is trying to get it out into the market quickly and bolster up the still meagre sales numbers of their Windows Phone line up, right? Right?!? Apparently that isn't the case. It did go in on sale in Germany but just today I learned that its western neighbour, the Netherlands, will only see the 925 going on sale late this year. Late, as in late Q4! What's up with that? This the exact same thing that happened with the 920, first have it available in the US only and then launch it a few months later in some European countries and a few months after that in a few more. Of course, there were supply constraints and the hardware in the 920 was fairly new anyway so a staggered launch did seem to make sense. The 925 however is a warmed up version of the 920. I understand why a company launches devices in a staggered fashion, it makes sense sometimes either from a financial standpoint (low stock and manufacture on a need basis) or from the standpoint of creating the 'want factor' for those who can't get it yet. What I don't get is these weird segmented areas. The 920 was available in France and Germany months before it was in Belgium and the Netherlands. Has Nokia somehow determined that Lumia's aren't being sold in the aforementioned countries? The Lumia 800 was available at launch in the Netherlands, but that wasn't  a device to judge momentum or interest by. Only die hard Nokia fans or Windows Phone fans bought that. Again, a staggered launch is understandable. But launching a device or product approximately 4-5 months later (to expected from info now available from Nokia) in a neighbouring country is insane and frankly beyond me. Especially when you consider the Netherlands having a very high smartphone adoption rate and a fairly high (smart)phone refresh rate. So Nokia, what's the theory behind this rather weird launch strategy? (Again)

iOS 7 Siri default search is Bing instead of Google. What’s with that dialler? Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:43 AM PDT As part of iOS 7′s approach to becoming WP7, Siri also now defaults to using Bing for searches. Bing. Who knew. Well that’s cool. Instantly a lot more Bing users I guess as most probably won’t know or bother switching back to google. Source: iMore Via: WPC Oh. Keep your head above the water and impress us with whatever major update you’re going to give WP8. You can’t stop people ‘stealing’ or being inspired by your design/features. You can only keep progressing, keep the competition either ‘guessing’ or trying to catch up. You CAN do it. But potential and executing something with definite precision are different things.
