| Nokia EOS PureView rumours again, 1mm thinner than Nokia Lumia 920 but with 41mp camera and xenon Posted: 31 May 2013 11:18 AM PDT Yet another set of rumours about an upcoming EOS. Mostly it’s the same stuff you’ve heard before but WPC have kindly confirmed this as “highly accurate” now. Something new is that the EOS apparently takes both 35MP and 5MP shots at the same time. One for saving, another for sharing. So no need to consider having to go to PureView mode and trade off possible detail for extra light or whatnot. The device, whilst with said hump is 1mm thinner than the 920. If previous rumours are right, then it’s meant to feel and look a lot thinner too due to the tapered edges. The interesting thing here is that the 41mp crops up again, though the specs for the most part seem to indicate EOS V1 (12mp?) and not the super EOS we’re kinda expecting (1080p screen, quadcore, etc).

Posted: 31 May 2013 09:41 AM PDT There appears to be a big screened Nokia Lumia In addition to the bigger device (see comparison against the HT Cone) note the tiles on the screen. It oddly looks too similar to this. Bezel seems to be minimised. If it’s real. Fingers crossed it packs a 1080p screen (for the tick box). I’m not sure about you but I’m noticing ever larger and larger phone screens amongst my peers :/. Source: WPC Cheers arts for the tip! |
| Review: Nokia Lumia 720; the Mid-Range Beast Posted: 31 May 2013 06:56 AM PDT Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, as is the case with my Lumia 720 trial device; which should now be faring the seas on the way back to the mystical Nokia Connects headquarters in London. Thankfully I was able to sum up my thoughts about the phone in a moderate 6 minute video review:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ28coaz2R4 For those of you who prefer written content, I’ll cut to the chase; the phone is the most beautiful Lumia (or other) device I’ve ever had the pleasure of handling so far (my opinion of course), the screen shames all other 480p displays and even the iPhone’s retina display, the design is *just* right. Performance wise it’s a mixed bag, delivering the same consistent lag free and smooth usage we’ve come to expect from WP8; however the phone struggles when resuming some apps (the whole OS will continue to run buttery smooth, but sometimes apps will get stuck on the resuming screen, or just take an abnormally long time to resume). The verdict is as I expected it from day one, I love the phone and I’d switch my 920 out for it in a heartbeat…. if it had the same processor/RAM. | Posted: 31 May 2013 05:48 AM PDT Whilst I didn’t have that much time at the Nokia Lumia 925 launch in London (literally just about 30 minutes and then setting off for the train) I did try to get some pictures again with the Nokia folks This is @juliegri, Nokians.fr The infamous Deano, Dean Pattrick from Nokia, “Entertainment Evangelist”, Nokia Music guy, bringer of awesome laces Mark Guim, TheNokiaBlog.com Pinoy Pride Michael Hell John Pope, Nokia Coms. I’ve known John through email chats and first met him in Finland last summer. Mark Squires, Nokia Comms Director who also loves Pin ball machines (@drpinball). I think I saw him at the last Nokia World but this was the first time we actually met. CJ, Clinton Jeff. Another of the ‘old guard’ previously known for ZOMGitsCJ, but more so now for his love of lady Gaga, Action figures, looking suave and unleashthephones.com. I forgot this guys name (sorry) but he had cool hair. Here’s Risto, remember him from the 808 Filmed tour of the Nokia Flagship store in Finland! He was there demoing the 925. Rafe Blandford, All About Symbian, All About Windows Phone. I also first met Rafe in Vegas to see the N93i and new N800/N95. We’ve had many encounters at various Nokia events since. Rafe is uber knowledgable at everything mobile. This wasn’t everyone. I didn’t get a change to snap a picture with all the Nokia folks due to time constraints. You can see some others here. |
| Posted: 31 May 2013 02:17 AM PDT As you may or may not know, outside of Nokia Blogging, I’m a medical student. After my final exam for this academic year, I’ll be going into my SSC (Student Selected Component) project. Being the tech/nokia geek that I am, my top choice was, “How will new technologies alter the delivery of health care?” which is led by possibly one of the best consultant/teaching staff at the hospital. Just yesterday we discussed what angle I would go to and I was so ecstatic to get the approval to pursue smartphones.  FFC 920, idstagram (now Instance) filter :p Surprisingly enough, they’re a lot more relevant than you might think. The smartphone sector is the fastest growing in the industry and has already made quite an impact on health care but we have only just scratched the surface, especially regarding where the future is and could be headed. A few years ago now I was at at the OpenMobile Summit with the WOMWorld/Nokia Crew. One of the talks I attended discussed how mobile was changing healthcare, e.g. avoiding hospital admittance, reducing hospital costs for patients. That was only in 2010 and so much has changed already in the way we use smartphones (and tablets) in healthcare. My University (Manchester) is apparently one of if not the first University to trial the use of tablets (you can guess which one) for their medical students – eco wise, cuts down on the paper trail; useful perhaps for learning with the various apps. Likewise for phones.
I’ve spoken about it before now and again when talking about Nokia’s potential role here, specifically regarding the studies being undertaken at Nokia Research Centre (nano sensors that can constantly monitor your vitals, your smartphone can keep recordings and suggest places for you to go, food for you to buy, health professionals to go and see etc – that’s just one aspect). This isn’t going to be a full blown article, but the starting point of my project. I’d like to get some ideas from you guys on where smartphones will change the delivery of health care? What have you experienced at the moment? Are you a health professional? How do you use your smartphone? Searching medical evidence? Apps for healthcare guidelines? Monitoring apps? How will smartphones change? Bigger phablets can perhaps eliminate the need for a separate tablet? Perhaps even more sensors? Hopefully you guys can follow me/interact whilst I do my research project. I’d like to get in touch with some folks from Nokia/Nokia Research Centre, at the very least to get some insights from them. If you have suggestions on areas to cover, feel free to chip in |

BenThePCGuy says he’s bought a SGSIV outright (750USD!) but asks what can you get for that price? Well a Nokia Lumia 521, MicroSD Card, Nokia Purity earphones and a Windows 8 touch laptop. Other things you’ll learn in this video is that Ben uses a Nokia Lumia 920 as his main phone. Either he’s ditched the HTC 8X or he never had that as his main phone. Again, pretty nice of Microsoft to be pushing Nokia Products. Let’s hope they’re doing the same amount of commendable work on WP behind the scenes.

When Amber update comes out and we get Nokia Smart Camera, you’ll see how much nicer it is to have the option of having a lens start up at default (and a useful one at that). The interface on Nokia Smart Camera is much nicer and more intuitive too.

This video is about how Nokia Asha users use their device to keep themselves preoccupied whilst waiting for something or someone. It makes me wonder if this is the Asha experience that makes younger people think Nokia is ‘old’, not realising what Nokia’s capable of in the new Lumias. Hopefully this might change slightly as Lumia gets cheaper and new Asha becomes more prevalent.
