Lumiappdates: Metrotube, YouTube player updated

MetroTube got updated to v4.0.3.0. It’s one of the beautiful, slick, Metro style YouTube apps for WP. Like several of the cool WP developers, you can have the app fully free and unrestricted, but if you like it enough to show your support you can buy it.

Can’t seem to see any notes of changes in the blurb or the app itself.

Nokia Exclusive Apps temporarily available to Non Nokia Lumia by glitch

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 02:08 PM PDT

nowei

The picture above might look like another pre-emptive move from Huawei to get ever closer to Nokia but no. A glitch in the Windows Phone store has recently meant that Non-Nokia devices get access to Nokia exclusive apps.

The glitch requires you to put your store through a proxy, which might seem like a huge security risk according to the comments. Access to all Nokia Lumia exclusive apps isn’t known.

BTW, for those that whine about Nokia exclusive apps, you know that respective manufacturers could, you know, produce their own or try to get other third party app developers to work with them? If they’re too lazy to do anything about it and you’ve chosen that manufacturer that is not Nokia, well, it’s not Nokia’s fault for being pro-active.

July 1st may see Windows and Windows Phone division merger?

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 01:52 PM PDT

A couple of weeks ago we heard that Microsoft maybe merging the Windows and Windows Phone division. There’s more legs behind this as TheVerge and AllThingsD report this may take place as soon as July 1st. It would be one of four main sectors at MS.

AllThingsD via TheVerge

Ideally a unified Windows division will only boost the ecosystem, increase development speeds, both for third party apps but also for the improvement of the OS itself. We’re still yet to see the increase in speed that the unified kernel between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 was supposed to have brought. It’s not enough that we’re not really even catching up. We need something momentous, some ginormous leap to bring excitement back into the WP platform as something that continually, and quickly evolves.

Apparently, most senior execs have been left out of Ballmer’s decision making in his goal of turning MS into a ‘devices and services’ company (e.g. Xbox – Xbox Live, Surface – Windows 8). Such changes understandably leaves many high-ranking managers  worried about their position.

One person ‘close to the situation’ reportedly said, “It feels like it is going to be titanic — that Steve is doing this change for his legacy…And it's the first time in a long time that it feels like that there will be some major shifts, including some departures’.

Given the closed nature even between MS execs, could Nokia have been informed of this shake up? As we mentioned before, a unified Windows might gain Nokia even more importance. It’s about time the super high end Nokia’s make themselves known (with the hope that MS unlocks the hardware restrictions) as well as tablets. Lumia of course is not the first time Nokia has produced a Windows device. The booklet 3G was a remarkable little trooper, hampered perhaps only by the lack of processing power (to get more battery life?). Imagine how different things could be now.

Confirmation: Windows Flag on Lumia 925 Does Act as a Notification Light (of sorts)

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 11:32 AM PDT

8737103497_0d44a6d6b8_zThere’s been a fair bit of confusion regarding the Windows/Home button on the Lumia 925, and whether it can act as a notification light or not. Well it seems that it does indeed “breathe” to show off new notifications as seen in the video below; kindly demoed by Ellen on her Lumia 925 with Firmware revision number: 3040.0000.1322.2005:

925-software-version

*It’s worth noting that Ellen’s 925 is the 32 Gb version of the device, perhaps that’s worth something?

As confirmed in the tweet and video above the light breathes to indicate charging when the phone is dead, and currently indicates an available “phone update” when the phone is powered on.

Once the phone was updated the flashing light no longer appeared and was not reproducible, so it seems to be dedicated to a sole usage at the moment; hopefully with more to follow.

When you start charging a completely empty battery, the start key flashes until the screen wakes
up and the charging progress is shown.- Lumia 925 user manual

The flashing light can also be spotted in the video below around the 1:20 mark on one of the devices in the background.

Weekend Read: Business Insider – “Maybe there’s hope for Microsoft yet”

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 07:39 AM PDT

DSC01526Here’s a random article from the Business Insider about normal non-techies switching to Windows Phone.

The dentist looked over at my puny iPhone and said (paraphrasing), “You still have an iPhone?  Ugh. Best move I ever made was ditching that thing.

“My IT guys gave me this,” he said. “I love it. So simple. Everything you need is right on this screen. I’m so glad to be done with that Apple crap.”

It’s interesting that although Blodget himself hasn’t switched to Windows Phone, it appears as if he somewhat agrees with the whole “ditching iPhone” notion.

Weekend Watch: Nokia 808 PureView vs Samsung Galaxy SIV Zoom

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 05:52 AM PDT

NOKIA 808 VS SAMSUNG GALAXY SIV ZOOM

Watching this video, I’m feeling the original purpose of the 41MP sensor (of which is the largest ever on a mobile device, not in terms of just MP count but the actual sensor size) is lost. Zooming ‘lossless’ is awesome but the biggest thing is PureView – SuperPixel, combining several pixels into one perfect pixel for the best quality image.

Anyway, check the video out. They say the 808 is the camera with a phone whilst the SIV is a phone with a camera. Perhaps on software -with Symbian being the niggle of most of the 808 reviewers. On appearance, the 808 certainly appears to be the smartphone.

Nokia EOS, is then going to be the super camera smartphone. I just can’t help but find the SIV Zoom horrendously ugly (hey, not dissing it because I’m a Nokia fanboy. We’ve got several sammy things at home)

Weekend Read: Why Microsoft Shouldn’t Acquire Nokia

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 03:16 AM PDT

microsoft-nokiaLast week we heard a bunch of stories/rumors regarding potential buyouts of Nokia; namely from Huawei and Microsoft. When the story of talks between Microsoft and Nokia fell through I felt something was off, especially since Microsoft didn’t seem to gain anything from purchasing a company that was already 100% committed to their platform (and doing more work then they themselves were doing). Here’s an interesting read on a couple reasons why Microsoft’s buyout of Nokia doesn’t sound reasonable, with some very good points. Mainly why would Nokia agree to only sell their devices decision and not the whole company? Especially as pointed out that it would be cheaper for Microsoft to buy the whole company flat out.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/1516012-nokia-microsoft-too-early-for-an-acquisition?source=yahoo

One good thing from all these rumors, is the fact that it has helped surge Nokia’s stock prices (currently $3.93/share); so we thought we’d do our part and help our beloved company by putting in some rumors of our own :P

Weekend Watch: Nokia Lumia 925 vs HTC One Low Light photos

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 03:06 AM PDT

Remember how we showed you a comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S4 against the Nokia Lumia 925 where it just seemed like the S4 didn’t even take a picture because the screen was black? It wasn’t just our test, it’s the same from others too, the Nokia Lumia 925 is a low light beast.

HTC’s also trying to muzzle in PureView low light territory with ‘ultrapixels’ though even the non PureView 720 seemed a tough opponent. Point of the matter is that whilst the 920 ruled low light for a long while, the 925 is even better.

And the strongest non-Nokia competitor the HTC One gets put in its place even further in this category.

LOL at the idiots that think the focus assist light is the LED flash.

UPDATE FOCUS ASSIST LIGHT IS NOT THE LED FLASH FOR TAKING A PHOTO. IT’S JUST THERE TO GET THE PICTURE IN FOCUS. IT WILL DO THE SAME THING IF YOU TURN AF FLASH OFF.
