Nokia top of Finland, outsells Apple and Samsung; Nokia outsells iPhone in Italy Posted: 25 Aug 2013 06:01 PM PDT
A couple of somewhat related news. First up, Nokia outselling iPhone in Italy. This information comes from IDC, which indicates that Nokia is the second highest in terms of smartphone market share, displacing iPhone in Q2 2013. Over in Finland, Nokia’s home, if you remember back in Q1 2013 Nokia had lost the crown as top phone manufacturer to Samsung. The rise of both Android and iOS had already been going on for many years prior to a switch to Windows Phone (as did the nose dive of Symbian), but it’s still never a pleasant sight to see in your backyard. Now in Q2 2013 as Nokia holds on to their long term strategy, they pull back into first place. Slowly but surely, Nokia and Windows Phone makes gains against iPhone. Apple sees this threat and have already readied their Lumia 620 looking budget iPhone 5Cs (at least that’s what comments have compared it to). The bigger problem is of course, Android. But one battle at a time, eh? Cheers Allex and Tayyab for the tip |
Video: Topolino70 – The Power of ZoomReinvented on Nokia Lumia 1020 Posted: 25 Aug 2013 05:14 PM PDT Here’s Topolino70′s latest video. Although it’s not a video as such, these are some beautiful stills that show the zooming capabilities after a picture is taken. Stunning!

MyDreamNokia: Nokia 3220 nostalgia & the Lumia 622 Posted: 25 Aug 2013 01:55 PM PDT The Moto X maybe stealing the spotlights with its customization, but Nokia is certainly a leader in this area it didn’t just steal the lights with highly customized devices, it used to create light shows “ literally”. Nokia introduced the Nokia 3220 eight years ago, it was a colorful phone you could have in white, blue, red and black frames that surrounded a see-through casing, that came with artworks you could replace with anything.
Nokia didn’t set people up to buy expensive artwork, instead it equipped the Nokia 3220 with a paper cutter and encouraged people to make their own, my favorite material was notebook covers that came in 3D, it certainly made for great back covers for that phone. Nokia also equipped the Nokia 3220 with a light show, where the phone had four translucent rubbers covering an array of colorful led lights that would dance to music, you couldn’t wait for it to ring at night. It also had wave messaging cover that sent messages in the darkness with light! You enter the message you want to show in the app that comes with it, wave the phone in the darkness and through light illusion you’ll actually read what its saying even across the street. (I know most of people wouldn’t believe this as I didn’t get to see it myself until very recently in a Youtube video.) Skip to 1:04 to see the wave messaging in action
Nokia couldn’t help but screw this phone over, it had no IR port, No BT, no MMC and no standard headphone jack! I was still working as a phone salesmen at the time and I still managed to sell lots of them specially to the ladies which liked the fashion choices that it enabled.
I believe that like many things Nokia did, some things deserve to be done better, this is why MyDreamNokia today will be the Lumia 622.
Design wise its basically the Lumia 620 with the same 3.8″ screen but with a thinner profile and the same translucent rubber covers and light combinations, it has the exact same specs as the Lumia 625 with radio and super sensitive touch , dual core 1.2 snapdragon with dual sim support and exchangeable back cover artwork. It’ll be the most amazing mid range device ever and thanks to the rubber sides it’ll be rigid and handle a fall or two, and thanks to the Lumia set of apps it’ll have amazing wow apps at every turn, it has to be shipped with “Blue software” so Nokia can add the lights drivers, (and Nokia should also program an app that mimics wave messaging ) This way Nokia could have recreated an amazing phone without sand bagging it with lack of features that’ll appeal to youngsters in the mid range and keep true to Nokia’s way of doing customization. So guys tell me what do you think?

Beautifully Minimal Nokia Lumia 1020 review Posted: 25 Aug 2013 01:51 PM PDT
Here’s a beautifully shot, picture by picture review of the Nokia Lumia 1020. It’s by Andrew Kim who writes on Minimally Minimal. His background is interesting:
You may have seen his 920 review. It appeared well after global availability but the style was fresh and the honesty was frank and welcome. Despite working at MS (Xbox) you’ll be told when things are crap. Andrew Kim is a stickler for design. He has high standards and openly praises what Apple has achieved on their hardware. As for the 1020, like other Nokia products, he finds this very well done saying Nokia has mastered polycarbonate and that the 1020 feels even more solid than the 920. Interestingly, Kim suggests that the 1020 would look hotter if there was a silver finish on the circular anodized aluminium camera bit (which surprised him to find it was not plastic) On the camera, there’s obvious praises. Whilst we’re told it’s not going to replace his RX1, it’s apparently better than most point and shoots and for 99% of consumers this would be the only camera they’d need. Kim notes that he’s an app fan and wants apps that share and manipulate apps. He doesn’t like the lack of instagram. Although he’s aware of Instance, he doesn’t like using it. Thankfully there’s 6tag (he hates the name) which he finds comparable to instagram on iOS. He doesn’t like the wireless charging cover either and thinks the added thickness isn’t worth it. It’s a fair and positive review. It’s not technically in depth but it’s an interesting angle in more ways than one. Reddit is a bit too focused on it being so hipster (I think they found the 920 review more agreeable, though it’s pretty similar so..:/) |

Weekend Watch: Nokia Lumia 1020 takes flight on Parrot AR.Drone Posted: 25 Aug 2013 06:55 AM PDT Here’s someone using the Nokia Lumia 1020 to record video in flight. The blades obscure the shot somewhat but otherwise, a cool looking video.
You may also remember the purpose built UAV for the Nokia Lumia 1020. I’m yet to see a clip from that but I’d love to see how that looks. |

Nokia Infographic: “Indestructible… My NOKIA has survived….” Posted: 25 Aug 2013 04:27 AM PDT The theme today seems to be the robustness of Nokia devices. Nokia’s facebook page posted this infographic of what their (fans?) Nokia has survived. Note, these are the regular standard Nokias, not the purpose built rugged ones. BTW, does anyone remember the tests that the 920 went through against a purpose built robust Sammy. No need to guess which actually survived more insults. |
Nokia Lumia 620 protective case bundled at “Nokia Lumia 620 Protected Edition” Posted: 25 Aug 2013 03:57 AM PDT
There’s reports of a ‘protected edition’ version of the Nokia Lumia 620 that’s being sold at Gigantti.fi and Verkkokauppa.com). I think that’s the 620 bundled with the IP54 certified protective case. Good way of presenting it I guess. Nokia hasn’t really done a ‘rugged’ version of their phones in a while – though some say they don’t need to since in the minds of the blogosphere, Nokia is indestructible. This adds a slight bit more protection in terms of dust and splash proofing. Via: esphoneblog Cheers Jonne Eilimö |
Nokia Lumia falls into Zoo enclosure of monkeys in Helsinki Zoo Posted: 25 Aug 2013 03:57 AM PDT Here’s a picture of a monkey giving this delicious Nokia Lumia a bite after it fell from the owners hands and into the enclosure at Helsinki Zoo. The monkeys were apparently fighting over this highly sought after phone. Did it survive? I can’t tell from the translation but it has come survived worse.
