Back towards the end of May I told you guys about a Uni project that I had that somehow allowed me to amalgamate my geekiness of Nokia phones and Medicine. From the comments and mails I got, we were shared some info about something called the Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE.

There’s $2.25 million dollars worth of prize money available to encourage breakthroughs of health sensing technologies. As you’re aware, our smartphones are the ubiquitous device that’s always with us, either as a patient or as a health practitioner. With the sensors built in or the sensors that they can connect to, smartphones are transforming healthcare in areas of diagnostics, telemedicine, research, reference and interventions.

There are two parts to the Nokia Sensing X Challenge and the first 12 finalists for the first Nokia Sensing X Challenge have been chosen:

http://www.xprize.org/press-release/final-12-teams-selected-in-nokia-sensing-xchallenge-demonstrate-potential

XPRIZE and Nokia today announced the 12 finalist teams for the first competition in the $2.25 million Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE, two separate and consecutive competitions to advance innovative sensing technologies that capture meaningful data about a consumer's health and surrounding environment. The advancements in sensing technology resulting from this competition will help lay the foundation for a mobile health revolution that transforms healthcare into a system that is highly personalized, instantly accessible and relevant to the medical needs of each individual.

To further highlight the drive behind new uses of mobile sensors in healthcare, there’s also the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, worth $10 million.

Imagine a portable, wireless device in the palm of your hand that monitors and diagnoses your health conditions. That's the technology envisioned by this competition, and it will allow unprecedented access to personal health metrics. The end result: Radical innovation in healthcare that will give individuals far greater choices in when, where, and how they receive care.

p.s. Thanks to everyone for the help on the Uni project. I just noticed now that the marks have been officiated – Full marks all around! Hurrah! :D

AAS: Video test – Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Nokia 808 PureView

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 01:50 PM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 21.33.50

Steve Litchfield from All About Symbian compares the video capture of the Nokia Lumia 1020 against the Nokia 808 PureView.

The OIS really shows itself off when zooming – the 808 shakes a bit whilst the 1020 looks steady – to the point that you can’t really tell you’re zoomed in on the 1020. On the 808, the shake when zoomed in is exaggerated and obvious. Steve agrees and says that the OIS makes it rather special.

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/18094_Nokia_Lumia_1020_vs_Nokia_808_.php

Viewing the montage several times, as I have, it’s hard not to give the Lumia 1020 the win overall, if I’m honest. Yes, the colours are more accurate in the 808 footage and yes, there’s very slightly more clarity and detail in some of the scenes, thanks to the real time hardware-accelerated oversampling. But the presence of a really decent OIS system in the Lumia 1020 makes a huge difference to video capture. I’m even warming to the 1020′s slightly ‘richer than life’ colour casts – hey, every day should glow like this!

B(r)ing your Windows Phone up to scratch with these new Bing apps

bing_apps

If you ever used Windows 8, you've probably also used one or two of the inbuilt Bing apps like Weather or News. Both apps are good at what they do and it made me wonder why these good apps weren't yet available in Windows Phone.

Wonder no more, since Microsoft released Bing Weather, News, Sports and Finance apps for Windows Phone. There isn't much more to say about it as I can't yet download the apps from the store. They are all listed as 'needs newer phone software' or something like that, which is weird since I'm on the newest FW on a Lumia 925. It is probably due to the apps needing to be properly indexed in the store before they are available globally.

Try the links below for yourself and see if you can download them already. As soon as I or any other of the MNB guys have the apps downloaded expect to see some more coverage, but until then; feel free to sound off in the comments if you have the apps installed already.

Video: Nokia Pro Cam running on Lumia 925

Nokia Pro Cam is Nokia’s advanced Camera App that was announced alongside the Lumia 1020 is said to be coming to the Lumia 92X series (920/925/928). However, if you’re like me, you don’t like waiting for things. If you currently have Amber on one of these devices (in fact any WP8 running Lumia Amber can run this – however if you’re using the 520 it will crash when you select the Front Camera), you can get the app installed, via a workaround (it won’t show up in the store just yet).

Take a look at a quick demo I recorded earlier of Pro Cam on the Lumia 925. You may also want to go have a read over at reddit (although we take no responsibility with what you may find there – or what you do with what you find). Reddit uses a method initially outlined here (Windows Blog Italia ) although the method I used was different.

Obviously, reframe won’t work the same as it does on the Lumia 1020, but boy are the real-time settings changes amazing! I’ve already made this my default camera after spending the last 6 weeks with Smart Cam as the default. Seeing how good the app is on the Lumia 925, I can only imagine how good it is on the Lumia 1020.

I love that you still have access to Lenses, and that if you set Pro Cam as the default camera, Smart Cam is provided as an available lens, which makes switching between the two very easy!

Motorola, like HTC, are also trying to push their luck with their camera technology. This time they’ve got something called ‘Clear Pixel’.

Camera talk begins at 3:27

In terms of camera, PureView wins here.

Other specs wise, they’re quite comparable.

Whatsapp for WIndows Phone Updated With Voice Chat

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 01:14 AM PDT

Whatsapp

Whatsapp for WIndows Phone has just received a feature update (surprisingly it doesn’t require you to actually update the app itself), that allows you to send instant voice messages to your contacts. A new microphone option appears next to the text input that starts recording instantly and sends the message as soon as your done (no more “review audio” option). A big plus is the fact that it seems to be using the microphones properly, as previously when sending a recording through whatsapp I literally had to shout to get my voice to register.

To record a new voice chat simply press the mic button and keep it pressed till your recording is done, or swipe to the right to cancel the recording, plus now an added cool feature is the senders display pic showing up next to the attached message; pretty cool huh!?

wp_ss_20130807_0001Of course the usual “shows read messages” option is still there (but I don’t think it works in group messages of course):

All in all it’s a pretty sweet feature update, made even cooler by the fact that this update rolled out to WP the same day as iOS Android and BB Yay!

Windows Phone Store passes 2 Billion downloads, 1 Billion in the last 6 months

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 12:45 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 08.20.52

Microsoft reports that in the last 6 months alone, there have been 1 billion downloads at the Windows Phone Store, totalling 2 billion since WP’s existence (October 2010). That’s some pretty excellent growth in the last 6 months, no?

Just for comparison, Ovi Store was launched in May 2009.  About 18 months later we reported that 1 billion download ‘rate’ had been reached (November 2010) Note that’s not yet 1 billion downloads. I believe the expected 1 billion was to come after 23 months. Similarly, it was August 2011 that the cumulative 2 billion for Nokia Store was reached.  Also a 6 month time frame. Considering the differences in sales between Symbian and WP, it shows that the approx 40m WP users more active at their downloading (relatively more apps/quality apps).

Apple, who popularised the app store format took about 14 months to reach 2 billion, in September 2009, with 50M devices (iPhones/iPod touches) and 85,000 apps. The first billion was reported in April 2009, about 5 months to get the second billion.

I couldn’t quite find similar details for Android.
