Video: Nokia Lumia 625 promo featuring ‘Grass House’ Posted: 06 Aug 2013 08:40 AM PDT Here’s a promo for the Nokia Lumia 625 featuring a UK band called ‘Grass House’. It’s nice as a music video featuring the Nokia Lumia 625, but otherwise I’m not quite sure if it works.

Nokia to Announce Quad Core Phablet with 1080p Screen Later This Year (September?) Posted: 06 Aug 2013 08:31 AM PDT The latest whispers to reach our ears from a source “familiar with Nokia’s plans” (but is no longer on the team) has mentioned that Nokia plan on releasing their first ever WIndows Phone phablet later this year. The device will also usher in Nokia’s era of Quad Core Lumias and it is very likely to also have a 1080p screen; all thanks to the upcoming GDR3 update which enables both those hardware features. We don’t have any word on the actual screen size as of yet but it’s definitely more than 5″. GDR3 should finally level the playing ground in terms of the meaning less spec race that is going on (but in the end is what convinces most consumers, since “more is better”). Unfortunately I find a phablet Lumia pretty pointless if the larger real estate isn’t utilized by better software optimization; I don’t just want larger tiles, I want to get more out of my screen. More tiles per row (sure to come thanks to 1080p screen), landscape mode would be welcome, plus perhaps some other features to help with media consumption and more “tablet-like” features? What features do you think should come with any Phablet (software or hardware wise?) Styluses? keyboards? It’s likely that we’ll see the launch of this device at the Nokia event this September, alongside a couple other devices. *Image above is NOT the phablet in question, only a MyDreamNokia render

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 08:06 AM PDT PhoneArena compares the Nokia Lumia 1020 with the HTC One. The bit I’m most interested in of course is Nokia’s offering in the camera, mainly because readers on another site seemed to harp on about how much better the One was (despite what the rest of the world’s reviewers said). Jump to about 08:35. Note when they talk about modes for the HTC One, you can achieve the same thing with ‘Lenses’. “It’s not even a close race in the photo and video quality department. The Lumia 1020 just outclasses the HTC One in every category from details, colours, dynamic range, low light performance, it’s just the absolute winner between the two” “When it comes to image quality, there’s no question about it, the Lumia 1020′s 41MP camera just destroys the ultrapixel camera on the HTC One.” For video it’s a clear win for the Lumia 1020, and you also get that cool 24PS mode for cinematic videos.” In terms of imaging, the 1020 is the one to go for. Credit where it’s due, the HTC One is a very nice, well rounded phone. We’re still waiting on MS of course to break down the hardware limitations and feature set so we can all tick boxes on paper and truly leave things to just the few differentiating factors that would of course, help push Nokia ahead. Fortunately the 1020 is still a pretty great phone. As Gizmodo said, finally a terrific camera in a great phone.

Skype for WP8 Updated; Still No video Message Support Posted: 06 Aug 2013 07:24 AM PDT The Skype app for Wp8 has just received an update pushing it up to version 2.8 bringing the following improvements:
Unfortunately the app still doesn’t bring support for Video Messaging, still leaving WP out in the cold in terms of that feature. Grab the update from the link below: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/skype/c3f8e570-68b3-4d6a-bdbb-c0a3f4360a51

GSM Arena reviews the Nokia Asha 501: The candy store kid Posted: 06 Aug 2013 02:12 AM PDT
Here is an excellent, and fair thorough review of the cute little Nokia Asha 501. The GSMArena team have a lot of respect for this handset and its history and finds it as being a fresh take on the touchscreen dumphone concept.
GSMArena love the hardware and design (considering the price bracket) and find the Asha platform (which reminds many of us of Swipe UI on the N9) as being fresh and the closest Asha has been to being a touchscreen with features of the core platform not far from the basic droid or WP7.8; a solid performer at around 100 EUR, which at this price means it is said not to have few natural rivals. Cheers Alvester for the tip!
