Nokia’s Refocus, explained and demoed

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 01:36 PM PDT

Nokia’s liking the whole pictures in pictures thing. Reframing in the likes of the 1020/1520/808 and with the refocus ability, different subjects in focus.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/10/30/nokia-refocus-shoot-first-focus-later/

Subjects can be in various depth ranges and you tap where that object you want in focus to be, and the image will readjust in front of you, as if you were there. Lytro style but done with software.

It’s not just about you as a photographer refocusing but later your friends on sites like facebook (it would be cool if you could do that with the 1020′s images. i.e. someone reframes online though given that the 5MP versions are the ones for sharing, the Nokia brain team would have to work out some solution there).

An interesting feature in refocus that I didn’t have with the app version we found (independent from Nokia?) is recombining the photos to make EVERYTHING in focus. As well as refocusing and having all in focus, you can even play with colours, so that what you touch stays in colour and everything else goes black and white (and out of focus!). This is the computational photography that Jo Harlow mentioned a while ago.

Nokia wins another victory in patent battle with HTCopypasta

Reuters reports that Nokia has won another victory in its patent battle with HTCopypasta in the UK. This follows another ruling in the US by ITC that HTC infringed a further two Nokia patents.

A Nokia spokesperson says that today’s judgement was a significant development and that “Nokia will now seek an injunction against the import and sale of infringing HTC products in the UK as well as financial compensation.”"

Nokia has invested over 45 Billion Euros into researching new technologies. Usually other companies may seek to license these technologies from Nokia. This is what happens when you copypasta.

Video: Save Nokia Pitch from Nokita – Aims to offer four times Microsoft’s bid.

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 11:44 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-10-30 at 18.37.51

This morning we saw a story about the potential value of Nokia with Android according to possibilities of it somehow getting 25% market share in the space of only three years.

The video below is a pitch from Nokita which is trying to save Nokia from being consumed by Microsoft. Nokita as we have learned is the Finnish word used in poker to raise a bet.

And so, these guys plan to offer more than 4 times what Microsoft is offering. They want to turn Nokia around with a Nokia dream team.

  • Biggest event offline and online.
  • Great investment for the brand
  • New phones and other fun products
  • They are looking for accreddited investors who can chip in from 5 million to 5 billion (where’s my wallet :p)

Cheers Michael and Aymen for the tip!

RAW DNG on Nokia Lumia 1520 and 1020 explained – first smartphones with RAW

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 09:23 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-10-30 at 16.14.18

NokConv talks about the Nokia Lumia 1520 and 1020′s ability to shoot RAW images. Basically digital negatives where you can tweak settings AFTER the photos are taken delivering maximum versatility when editing your images post production.

It’s a much requested feature, especially from the 808 users who wanted to push the boundary of mobile photography further.

Colours, tone mapping, noise filtering – change it how you like! Although on the one hand we’re moving towards the “point and shoot” simple photography, on the other, people are becoming more creative with how they’re editing their pictures. In Nokia Smart Camera (and in a way on the N9 I believe) Nokia allowed users to edit photos in a non destructive way. Likewise with cropping on Pro Cam. This allows for that and so much more as your images can be tweaked AFTER the photo is taken. Yes you can do that with jpegs but the quality and flexibility isn’t the same.

Juha says:

"But with RAW you can define these settings on your own, and this gives you enormous creative opportunities later on. That is the power of the digital negative – you can change the settings after taking the photo. You can tune the settings separately for each photo, just the way you like it – whether you a searching for a special artistic expression or the most natural representation of the original scene."

"Overall, I'm so proud of what we have achieved in Nokia. We have the amazing camera hardware, very powerful camera user interface, and now the RAW support. When you bring this all together, the system is more than the sum of its parts. I'm always carrying my Lumia 1020 in my pocket. I use the manual controls, exposure bracketing, and RAW – and the results are just pure magic."

There is also one more additional benefit when shooting and archiving photos in RAW. "The RAW computer software and algorithms evolve all the time. If you shoot with RAW, you can take benefit of the continuously developing algorithms in the future. Who knows what these tools will offer in 10 years!"

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/10/29/another-nokia-first-digital-negatives-raw-dng-lumia/

Screen Shot 2013-10-30 at 16.20.29The downside is the files are quite large, as expected in RAW images (and the fact that they’re 38MP!). 40MB. Fortunately there’s a memory card slot in the 1520.

Cheers Janne for the tip!

Nokia’s phone operations could rise to EUR 23 Billion with Android in three years says former chief economist

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 12:11 AM PDT

Android Lumias

According to this translated article, should Nokia have gone Android they expect Nokia’s mobile unit to rise to the value of EUR 23 billion. This being based on instantly taking 15% share of Android within a year and 25% in three years.

Other parts of the translation mention Nokia phones that could run on both Android and Windows Phone :/. What is “Nokia puuhataan” which is supposedly giving a counter offer to MS? Nokia posted a profit yesterday, signifying stronger beginnings of a turn around.

Behind the Scenes of Ellie Goulding’s How long will I love you, filmed on Nokia Lumia 1020

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 11:59 PM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-10-30 at 06.51.57

Yesterday you may have seen Ellie Goulding’s Music Video shot entirely on the Nokia Lumia 1020! Here’s the behind the scenes of what went on.

Check out the usefulness of the Nokia Camera Grip there. It’s nice seeing where we’ve come along, from the N93 that was the first of Nokia’s phones to focus on video (remember ‘DVD-Like quality’ lol). It reminds me again of the work done with the N8, and that short film starring Tywin Lannister, Pamela Anderson, Dev Patel and that guy off Gossip Girl (?). The film makers say they’ve been able to try shots they’ve always wanted to do but not been able to prior to this.

George the sound guy sounds a bit like Steve Litchfield.

LumiAppDates: Whatsapp Beta, Nokia Camera, Amazon Mobile

wp_ss_20131029_0003

Yesterday we posted about a new open beta for Whatsapp that anyone can join, the fruits of this beta version have started as now WP8 users can also toggle the screen rotation for the app from the settings menu; something that came to WP7 users in the previous update. Also update are Nokia Camera (no visible changes as far as I can tell), and Amazon mobile as well as a photo sharing app called Phriz.be

Nokia Q3 Results: $162 Million Profit & 8.8 Million Lumias Sold

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 07:02 AM PDT

Nokia+logo,+Helsinki,+Finland+87570Nokia have just released their Q3 earnings, which have managed to create a new record high for Lumia sales, especially in the US. Nokia generated  $7.79 billion revenue and  $162 million profit off that. Nokia also sold 8.8 Million Lumia devices this quarter, with  1.4 Million going straight to North America (thanks to the 520 and 521). However the average sale price per device dropped from 155 euros to 143 (7%) due to the competitive pricing of the low end Lumias.

Full report here: http://www.results.nokia.com/results/Nokia_results2013Q3e.pdf

*In Q2 Nokia had sold a then record breaking 7.4 million Lumia devices, thankfully that number continues to increase.

*Both HERE maps and NSN managed to maintain a positive outcome, offsetting a negative 1.6% perating balance from the Devices and Services division (meaning that the parts that Microsoft didn’t buy are the profitable ones :P )

*Nokia also sold 5.9 million Asha full-touch smartphones, now with the release of the 500, 502 and 503 those numbers should hopefully increase.

Thanks for the Tip Janne and Alvester

Video: Sailfish OS running on Nokia N9 (VERY Alpha)

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 04:32 AM PDT

N950 Sailfish OS Jolla

This has been around for a few days, and for some reason I thought I had posted it, but clearly I haven’t. So if you follow what’s been happening in the N9 porting effort, you may or may not be aware that recently the community ported Wayland (the software running the Sailfish UI) to Nemo (the base of Sailfish). Pretty much what this means is the community managed to get Sailfish compatible with the N9, it was just missing the Jolla specific UI.

Well, it seems that some adventurous community members have tried (and succeeded) in installing the packages from the SDK onto the N9 and have a very early (Pre-Alpha if you will) build of Sailfish running on the N9. This is not intended to replace Harmattan in anyway at the moment, but its great to see how close we are to having Sailfish fully operational on the N9.

Nokia films Children in Need song for Ellie Goulding Music Video on Nokia Lumia 1020, (with 1020 and 925 in video)

Ellie Goulding is quite the sensation here in the UK with hit after hit of catchy songs and collaborations. So it’s quite amazing to see her latest music video featuring, not simply the Nokia Lumia 1020 but also filming the ENTIRE video. It also shows the 925.

You may or may not remember it, but the Nokia World in in which the same year which the Nokia N8 was released, one of Nokia’s hired celebrity entertainers? Ellie Goulding! I wish I could find those pictures now.

Nokia, “How Long will I love you?” Forever :)

Another super cool thing? This song is the official Children in Need song! A huge UK charity yearly event. So it’s definitely going straight to number 1. Other online media talking about this song seems to point to this video :) .

Whatsapp Open Beta Now Available for WP

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 01:57 PM PDT

Whatsapp

For anyone interested, similar to the “Facebook Beta” which allows users to gain access to early builds of the app, provided they’re willing to put up with the occasional bug and hiccup. Whatsapp now has a  similar app available in the marketplace; the app is an open beta meaning anyone can download it without being added to a beta users list, but it won’t appear in marketplace searches. As of yet there doesn’t seem to be anything new compared to the public versions, but if you’re interested grab the app from the link below:

*note: I was planning NOT to use it as I didn’t want to lose any of my messages, but it turns out the backup & restore worked perfectly between the two versions, so no worries. wp_ss_20131028_0006 wp_ss_20131028_0007Via Reddit

Nokia Teasing First Images of Official WP Instagram App

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 01:23 PM PDT

BXrkWBfCAAEQjGeOne of the announcements at Nokia World last week was that of the official instagram app coming to WP. Of course there are plenty of 3rd party alternatives currently available (namely 6tag and instance) but the official app carries weight with it, finally recognizing the platform as worthy.

The app looks pretty much as expected (and in fact I think 6tag still looks better), but hooray for official apps right? Anyone excited? Does it even matter anymore?

P.S. You can follow the official Nokia instagram here: http://instagram.com/nokia

DPReview’s Lumia 1020 Vs. 808 Photo Comparison

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 01:14 PM PDT

cb209592934c094bb364ef04afa53e96

DPReview have done a comparison of the Lumia 1020 vs the 808; and using some of their fancy in-web software you can compare both the images side-by-side simultaneously. The 808 does capture more details at full zoom, as well as having more defined colors (rather than a slightly washed out tint of the 1020); of course this is most likely due to the different software techniques at work here. However the oversampling and perfect pixel technique should both come to the 1020 in future updates, so perhaps we;ll see some improvement then?

Check out the full comparison here:

“NOKIA” Software Update Available for Lumia 1020

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 06:57 AM PDT

DSC04370

I;m not sure exactly what’s in this update, but my 1020 just alerted me of an available NOKIA software update. It only took about 3 minutes to install, but it’s currently “migrating data” so I’m not sure what’s new yet; unfortunately  this probably isn’t the Nokia Black update that was announced alongside the 1520 & 1320, but who knows?

*P.S. my 1020 is UK region, running GDR3

Update:

After the update my software version is 3050.0000.133x.1001.

According to the Nokia support page the included features are:

  • Imaging enhancements
  • Touch functionality improvements
  • Performance and stability improvements

Surface 2 can’t compare with Nokia Lumia 2520, ‘not really a contest, Nokia tablet bigger, faster, and lower power!”

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 06:07 AM PDT

The performance on [the 2520] is brilliant,” Raj Talluri, senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm’s application processors, told CNET. “It’s really at the next level. It’s not even really a contest [compared to Surface 2] … In every area, it’s much bigger, faster, and lower power.”

Cnet

Well those words are coming from a Qualcomm exec, proud of Nokia’s Lumia 2520 tablet which is powered by a Qualcomm 2.2GHz quadcore S800 chip. The Surface 2? 1.7GHz from NVidia.

Talluri also mentions that what we see of RT now may not be what we see tomorrow. Big changes planned ahead? Hopefully it just signifies RT becoming something accepted and not the joke it seems to be at least where the tech blogosphere is concerned.

Social Scene – Social Time Lapse Photography for Windows Phone

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 05:35 AM PDT

Social_Scene_3

One of the great things about Nokia, is networking. At this year’s event in Abu Dhabi, I got to meet Jason, a budding developer who took part in Nokia’s Future/Capture Hackathon in Sweden earlier this year. He was at Nokia World, to showcase his app, Social Scene. The idea around the app is really simple, and I love it! This is the kind of app I think with the right level of exposure and cross-platform uptake, can be along the lines of Instagram and Vine – yes, the concept is THAT good!

Social_Scene_4

Social Scene is a social network of its own pretty much, allowing users to snap an image of a certain location, and uploading it to the service. Other users (or the same user) visit the same location at a different time, and capture the same image. What the app will then do, is show a time lapse of that location, generated by the various users. Pretty neat huh?

Despite Jason having had over 20 years experience in development, this was his first WP8 app, and bloody hell did he do a good job! Here is what he had to say about the idea behind Social Scene:

I lost my father when I was young, but knew I was walking down the same streets and seeing the same local sights that he would have.

The idea that using todays amazing mobile devices with excellent cameras and GPS would let me capture these local sights for my children to see, led me to the idea of Social Time Lapse Photography.

Time Lapse Photography is nothing new, but doing it in a 'Crowd Sourced' way is. It means I can take a photo of the Eiffel Tower in Paris on a sunny day, then later someone else can take the same photo when it's snowing. Over a long period of time when can capture changes and share this 'story of change' with others.

One of my favourite features is that you can overlay an existing image. This allows you to line up the shot perfectly!
