Nokia’s Refocus, explained and demoed Posted: 30 Oct 2013 01:36 PM PDT Nokia’s liking the whole pictures in pictures thing. Reframing in the likes of the 1020/1520/808 and with the refocus ability, different subjects in focus.
Subjects can be in various depth ranges and you tap where that object you want in focus to be, and the image will readjust in front of you, as if you were there. Lytro style but done with software. It’s not just about you as a photographer refocusing but later your friends on sites like facebook (it would be cool if you could do that with the 1020′s images. i.e. someone reframes online though given that the 5MP versions are the ones for sharing, the Nokia brain team would have to work out some solution there). An interesting feature in refocus that I didn’t have with the app version we found (independent from Nokia?) is recombining the photos to make EVERYTHING in focus. As well as refocusing and having all in focus, you can even play with colours, so that what you touch stays in colour and everything else goes black and white (and out of focus!). This is the computational photography that Jo Harlow mentioned a while ago.
Everything in focus. Super EDOF: You can see this on video (as well as the improved OIS on the 1520) below.

Nokia wins another victory in patent battle with HTCopypasta Posted: 30 Oct 2013 11:58 AM PDT Reuters reports that Nokia has won another victory in its patent battle with HTCopypasta in the UK. This follows another ruling in the US by ITC that HTC infringed a further two Nokia patents. A Nokia spokesperson says that today’s judgement was a significant development and that “Nokia will now seek an injunction against the import and sale of infringing HTC products in the UK as well as financial compensation.”" Nokia has invested over 45 Billion Euros into researching new technologies. Usually other companies may seek to license these technologies from Nokia. This is what happens when you copypasta. Source: Reuters Cheers @ph_eagle for the tip! |
Video: Save Nokia Pitch from Nokita – Aims to offer four times Microsoft’s bid. Posted: 30 Oct 2013 11:44 AM PDT This morning we saw a story about the potential value of Nokia with Android according to possibilities of it somehow getting 25% market share in the space of only three years. The video below is a pitch from Nokita which is trying to save Nokia from being consumed by Microsoft. Nokita as we have learned is the Finnish word used in poker to raise a bet. And so, these guys plan to offer more than 4 times what Microsoft is offering. They want to turn Nokia around with a Nokia dream team.
Cheers Michael and Aymen for the tip!

RAW DNG on Nokia Lumia 1520 and 1020 explained – first smartphones with RAW Posted: 30 Oct 2013 09:23 AM PDT NokConv talks about the Nokia Lumia 1520 and 1020′s ability to shoot RAW images. Basically digital negatives where you can tweak settings AFTER the photos are taken delivering maximum versatility when editing your images post production. It’s a much requested feature, especially from the 808 users who wanted to push the boundary of mobile photography further. Colours, tone mapping, noise filtering – change it how you like! Although on the one hand we’re moving towards the “point and shoot” simple photography, on the other, people are becoming more creative with how they’re editing their pictures. In Nokia Smart Camera (and in a way on the N9 I believe) Nokia allowed users to edit photos in a non destructive way. Likewise with cropping on Pro Cam. This allows for that and so much more as your images can be tweaked AFTER the photo is taken. Yes you can do that with jpegs but the quality and flexibility isn’t the same. Juha says:
The downside is the files are quite large, as expected in RAW images (and the fact that they’re 38MP!). 40MB. Fortunately there’s a memory card slot in the 1520. Cheers Janne for the tip! |

According to this translated article, should Nokia have gone Android they expect Nokia’s mobile unit to rise to the value of EUR 23 billion. This being based on instantly taking 15% share of Android within a year and 25% in three years. Other parts of the translation mention Nokia phones that could run on both Android and Windows Phone :/. What is “Nokia puuhataan” which is supposedly giving a counter offer to MS? Nokia posted a profit yesterday, signifying stronger beginnings of a turn around. Source: talouselama.fi Thanks Eero for the tip! |
Behind the Scenes of Ellie Goulding’s How long will I love you, filmed on Nokia Lumia 1020 Posted: 29 Oct 2013 11:59 PM PDT
Yesterday you may have seen Ellie Goulding’s Music Video shot entirely on the Nokia Lumia 1020! Here’s the behind the scenes of what went on. Check out the usefulness of the Nokia Camera Grip there. It’s nice seeing where we’ve come along, from the N93 that was the first of Nokia’s phones to focus on video (remember ‘DVD-Like quality’ lol). It reminds me again of the work done with the N8, and that short film starring Tywin Lannister, Pamela Anderson, Dev Patel and that guy off Gossip Girl (?). The film makers say they’ve been able to try shots they’ve always wanted to do but not been able to prior to this.
George the sound guy sounds a bit like Steve Litchfield.
