Creator of the Instagram supported 6Tag, and the Vine client 6sec, Rudy Huyn was on Reddit answering questions about Windows Phone.

He reveals that his SnapChat app is due for release in the next 2-3 weeks.

Other salient points?

  • Main phone – 1020. Also has:  520, 820, 920, 925, 8x
  • dev on WP is a pleasure, work on ios/android is… a work
  • On the WP- youtube saga:

    Child play…

I really don’t like when google do that. If I was Microsoft, I think I have released the youtube app source code

  • Any work on a Tinder app – well not sure Rudy’s aware of it. Let’s get snapchat out first :p

WP8 Update 3 changelog; Nokia Camera available for Lumia PureView and Nokia Black coming early next year

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 06:56 AM PDT

Three main tidbits:

1) The WP8 Update 3 changelog. This is just the raw stuff from MS, which does not include Nokia’s goodies.

2) Nokia camera. Available right now for Nokia Lumia PureView devices. I’m enjoying it a lot actually. Still some improvements I’d like to see but overall heading in the right direction. Much nicer to rotate the dial for smartcam versus going through “lenses”. Colours have improved. Yes yellowing, especially under xenon.

3) Nokia Black (Update 3 + Nokia stuff) coming early next year. Next year :( .

__________

Update 3

OS version: 8.0.10501.127 or 8.0.10512.142*

Accessibility. We’ve made several improvements for customers who are visually impaired.

Storage. Now you can easily free up storage space on your phone and manage temporary files. New categories show what’s taking up space.

Driving Mode. Feeling distracted behind the wheel? Driving Mode allows you to minimize incoming calls and text messages to help you focus on the road.

Screen. Reading emails in bed? You can lock your screen orientation so it doesn’t shift when you move your phone around.

Wi-Fi. Start preserving cellular data on your phone right out of the box—you can now connect to Wi-Fi during set up.

Internet sharing. Now you can use your phone's cellular data connection from your Microsoft Windows 8.1 devices by pairing them over Bluetooth.

Bluetooth. Several fixes were made to address known issues, and improvements were made to connection quality for Bluetooth accessories.

Ringtones. Do more with ringtones now. Assign ringtones for text messages, so you’ll know who’s texting you without even looking. Use your custom ringtones for more things—text messages, instant messages, emails, voicemail, and reminders.

App switcher. Don’t look back. Now you can use the App switcher to quickly close apps when you’re finished with them.

Other improvements. Includes many other improvements to Windows Phone.

*Your update version number depends on your specific phone model and mobile operator.

Ollila: Choosing OPK’s successor (and MeeGo)

This article reveals more from Ollila’s book which was previously discussed here.

http://www.iltasanomat.fi/kotimaa/art-1288610386912.html

Janne shared a comment from “Random Random” which at first discusses Vanjoki’s part. The whole article is actually a pretty good read. The translator makes it slightly easier to understand than usual though I don’t want to summarise as I’d still be lost in translation. There were three candidates and their vision for Nokia was scrutinised. Vanjoki looked to be the next ideal leader, at least in the eyes of Nokia fans. Not just because he was a Finn but because of his direction to go MeeGo, Qt, Symbian. But it wasn’t that simple.

About Vanjoki as the candidate.

They had hired almost 2000 people working for the MeeGo project while Google implemented Android with just 400-500 people.

Here goes the claim that MeeGo was a cheap small project for only 200 people working for it.

Imagine!

Almost 2000 people and they managed to ship just one phone with all those people working for it.

N950 doesn't count because it was cancelled already in H1 2010

Belfiore: 3 column WP8 depends on screen size, not resolution.

Joe Belfiore confirms that the 3 column addition seen in the Nokia Lumia 1520 depends on the screen size, not resolution. Technically that means it doesn’t depend on anything at all. The manufacturer decides whether it’s in the user’s best interest to have additional tiles which may or may not hamper usability if the tiles become too small. With Nokia being the only WP manufacturer really, it’s mainly then just up to Nokia to decide to let users have the two or 3 columns (though technically there are 6).

Why not just give it as a user option eh? 4 mini tiles or 6 mini tiles?

Nokia making up 90% of Windows Phone share.

Just a quick update where things are on the up and up. With more Lumia and Asha sales versus the previous quarter, Nokia is now making 90% of WP share.

http://blog.adduplex.com/2013/10/adduplex-windows-phone-statistics.html#more

WP is becoming a stronger third place contender behind Android and iOS. There’s tough times ahead but it’s getting better with each revision of WP8 and each set of newer Nokia Lumia handsets.

Nokia’s been delivering some great hardware with Nokia Lumia, but another route of their success is bringing great features at lower price points. Here, a 6″ phablet like the 1520, but with slightly more modest features. Still a great 720p screen but powered by dual core and a 5MP camera at just a crazy $339! Just over 200GBP!
