Video: How to get Folders with Lumia Black? Download Nokia’s ‘App Folder’ available in store. For settings too

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 02:48 PM PST

DSC04638Here you go. For those who are lucky enough to be on Nokia’s Lumia Black update,(edit: Apparently GDR3 only, even the enthusiast update is enough to use App Folder).  you can download the app at the store, and set up your folders to include apps as well as settings to be pined on your homescreen; check out the video below for a quick demo:

http://youtu.be/IgrTcnozvbU

Grab the app from the link below:

Note how you can also include settings. It’s not the best implementation of folder that I would have liked. You might as well have a shortcut app that has individual small tiles linking directly to settings (4 in a 2×2 square).

For apps, I guess it helps organise things like favourite games, favourite camera apps, favourite news etc. Even better if it’s possible to shrink this folder to 1×1 size. I don’t have Lumia Black yet so I can’t check it out.

Finnish guy makes a DIY solar other half for Jolla Phone

What we’re looking at is one of the first interesting ‘other half’ mods for Jolla Phone. This is a small project that ended up with a solar panel bit on the back of Jolla phone.

I remembered last night that I had solar panel in my scrap box. The size was perfect for Jolla and a quick test proved that it can be used to charge Jolla too:

- voltage is about 6 V (measured with multimeter)
- panel outputs 40-80 mA under a lamp (measured with multimeter)

I haven’t seen sun in a month or so here in Finland so the test was performed under 70 W halogen, distance ~10 cm.

I have to test the Solar Half more, but it indeed seems to be working rather nicely

MS’ Grev Sullivan “We will have the license for the Nokia name” – More Nokia WP? +related Nokia-MS stuff

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 12:03 PM PST

windows-phone-apps2-600x361

The original Nokia-MS deal said that Microsoft could use the Nokia brand name only in feature phones. Not smartphones. Which is a shame given that Nokia Lumia means more to the world than WP.

I’m not sure if there’s a little mix up here. I just noticed one of the comments (“stanger001“) saying something along the lines of MS using Nokia name in smartphones. Unless there’s been some other development, this was the only bit of news I could find.

Microsoft is in the final stages of acquiring the device business of Nokia and seems prepared to continue using the Nokia name on some smartphones. “We will have the license for the Nokia name,” Sullivan said.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9245273/Windows_Phone_8.0_is_upgradeable_to_8.1_Microsoft_says

Perhaps these were for smartphones already in development prior to the deal? (e.g. 1520, 929)

Whilst we’re on the subject of the Nokia-MS deal again, let’s take a look at this comment left by dss.

http://winsupersite.com/windows-phone/how-will-major-industry-shifts-impact-windows-phone

"That Nokia pretty much had to sell itself to Microsoft or attempt yet another turnaround and perhaps adopt Android is obvious. That Microsoft had to purchase Nokia or watch its smart phone platform disappear overnight is likewise obvious"

“The first and more desirable outcome is that Microsoft treat the Nokia hardware and services business it is acquiring as something that is essentially a standalone business that operates outside the normal Microsoft organization. Something like Skype that appears to work by its own rules. This structure, which would permit that part of Nokia that will now be owned by Microsoft to work as it did before, has a chance to succeed if only because of the massive financial backing of its parent. It would let Nokia continue doing what it does oh so well, but without the fear of death hanging over it”

“I’m just not sure how Microsoft could absorb Nokia and not screw up the things that are special about Nokia.”

Finally, to this post. Jo Harlow says there’s be a Nokia Lumia flagship across all networks (US). As for a Nokia Android, it wasn’t something Jo Harlow says she can comment on. Cheers Alvester!

Nokia Lumia Black officially rolling out, Folders and latest imaging algorithms ahoy

Nokia Lumia Black is officially being pushed out according to NokConv – Surrently 1020 and 925 owners will see this update, other Lumia devices will get the update soon. Note the implementation of ‘folders’ which seems new to me unless I’ve missed something as well as:

Glance 2.0

Nokia Refous (perhaps by default) – 1GB RAM phones

Nokia Beamer – 1GB RAM

Nokia Story Teller

Nokia Camera

Latest generation of imaging algorithms. The Lumia Black update further improves the image quality, especially in Lumia 1020. Among others, the improvements include a new oversampling algorithm, making your images more natural looking with reduced noise, while ensuring your photos remain wonderfully sharp.

The Lumia Black update also brings a series of enhancements from Microsoft to Nokia Lumia smartphones. These include safe driving mode – which cuts out unnecessary distractions when you're on the road; customised ringtones for each contact. You can now also close apps within the in multitasking view and lock the screen rotation if you wish.

"Nokia Lumia Black updates the imaging experiences on your Lumia and makes using the Windows Phone even more fluid. New App Folders and the ability to close apps in multitasker are my personal favourites. I also encourage everyone to try out the Nokia Refocus app that introduces a whole new dimension to photography," says Samuli Hänninen, vice president of software program management for Nokia's Smart Devices business

Samsung-Like Asha?

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 08:46 AM PST

Screen Shot 2014-01-09 at 16.38.07Zaid tweeted us this image from Nokia’s site of what looks oddly more like one of Samsung’s iPhone copypastas. But it’s meant to be an Asha 501. Clearly it’s not.

It resembles the S2 (which itself resembled earlier iPhone models).

The Asha 501 has a speaker on the face. There’s also a light at the bottom where the button is and the button is slightly rounder. Not to mention the splash of colour on the edges. And the aspect ratio of the screen in wrong. The only thing Nokia is the label and the button placement on the side.

Spotted: Nokia Lumia 920 on BBC’s Sherlock Series 3

For those who have seen the latest Sherlock series, you may have noticed the odd Nokia pop in here or there. It wasn’t so much as a placement (everyone had different phones from different manufacturers).

This was Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older and apparently smarter brother.

A couple of years back, the same series  did show a Vertu as a key centrepiece to one of the episodes. Now I think it’s Dr Watson with a Samsung, Sherlock with an iPhone and Mycroft with a Nokia.

Leakyleak: Verizon outs the Nokia Lumia ICON.

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 12:51 AM PST

Whilst it is not yet official, a page has appeared on Verizon showing the Nokia Lumia ICON.

20MP, 1080p confirmed. The site is no longer up it seems. Also, is it me or does the clock say 1020?

No solid info on screen size but it may be closer to 5″ according to the rumours.
