Press Render of Nokia Normandy Leaked

This popped up earlier this morning and I finally got around to posting it now. It shows off the rumoured Android-fork powered Nokia device, sporting a rather Metro looking UI. It make sense really, as Nokia would obviously try and keep a consistent experience across the portfolio of devices.

Rudy Huyn Finishes his Tinder App, 6tindr

Quick heads up! Rudy tweets he’s finished making his Tinder app. Creator of the 6Tag and 6Sec app, we should be getting 6Tindr once the final tests are done and it’s published. Tinder, if I understand from how my housemate and friends use it, is like a dating app kinda thing. You might link it up to facebook, see who’s in the area, like a picture of people you might know and get chatting.

Rudy’s not only filling in WP where it’s missing, he’s actively updating his apps with features and bug fixes! Even though the official Vine and Instagram apps are here, I prefer using Rudy’s apps :).

That’s why when users asked Rudy to make a Path client and he said there’s an official one coming, folks said his would be better.

AshaTips: Saving Battery life on your Nokia Asha.

Whilst these might sound obvious, you’ll be surprised at the number of people who aren’t aware of these battery saving tips.

This one is from Nokia on how to save battery on your Asha (though don’t they have super long battery lives anyway?)

e.g. Nokia recognises battery saving by turning Glance Screen OFF.

For some users, this is negligible battery life reduction but every little helps (the 1520 recently achieved GSMArena’s longest endurance rating WITH glance on).

It looks like a cute baby Lumia (925)

BlackBerry new CEO says “BES” coming to Windows Phone

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 11:21 AM PST

CrackBerry reports that newly appointed CEO, John Chen, will be allowing BlackBerry Exchange Server (BES) on Windows Phone.

I could put a sales team on Wall Street. I know how to do this up and down Wall Street …  we will go in and tell them why BES is the best thing for them, and go through the road map, the offerings, and all that good stuff. We’re going to protect their investment in iPhone, and Android, and everywhere else, even with Windows Phones.

Whilst you may not use it (perhaps you’re an “Exchange” person), it’s always good to have options. BES used to be one of BlackBerry’s unique plays for their OS. But since no one is biting, then it’s better for them to make something out of their situation rather than throwing it all away.

BlackBerry and WP/Nokia were fighting for third place. This shows more and more than 2014′s options will be that trio.

A handful of users reporting of Update Error 80188309 with Lumia Black?

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 11:15 AM PST

Screen Shot 2014-01-13 at 19.11.52

It’s not a lot, there’s only one result on google search so far and a handful of tweets. But as the update becomes more widely available it might (or might not) experience more problems.

The issue? The update is downloaded but it won’t open. Hopefully nothing worse (like the phone bricking).

It seems to have affected 820/920 users atm.

We’ll update if there’s more info or a solution to this.

Update 1 @19:45:

Cheers atesates for the video. Here’s what the issue looks like.

@kinaton tweets us that it might be due to low storage space but other users have said they have ‘plenty’ (though what specifically is required isn’t mentioned. WP sometimes refuses to install 900mb sized games if you have 3GB left)

Update 2:

Cheers @dhrtwitt for the screenshot.

Clove’s quick comparison between the Nokia Lumia 1520 and HTC One Max

Another quick comparison from Clove, this time a little ‘fairer’ given that both devices have exceptionally large screens.

Promo: Nokia Video Director – Capture, edit and share. Edit on the tablet – because you can’t do it on your phone.

Here’s a promo for Nokia’s video director App.

I actually find it annoying that instead of editing on the phone, I have to transfer it to another device.

Even just splicing some clips together. It shouldn’t be that hard. I mean, even for the 1520 which is identical processing wise to the 2520?

LeakyLeak: Interesting App homescreen for (Android powered?) Nokia Normandy. Flat UI affair

Another shot of the Nokia Normandy device. This time showing the app launcher. It’s all very flat which seems to be the new in thing.

I’m not sure the purpose of having these shelf like segments.

PureView Perfection: Nokia Black reaches 808 PureView standards?

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 10:37 AM PST

Screen Shot 2014-01-13 at 18.31.31

Apologies for the lack of posts today (and the past few days) I’ve had exams and whatnot.

But here’s an awesome article from Steve Litchfield to make up for it.

The Symbian Aficionado reckons that in Nokia Black, Nokia have now reached the Purer pixel standards as set out by the 808.

The gold standard for oversampling is the Nokia 808′s hardware processing of the 41MP sensor data and, with this update, the Lumia 1020 matches what the 808 achieves in terms of reducing noise and creating ‘purer’ pixels

http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/features/item/19078_Stunning_Black_imaging_on_the_.php

It’s true that the software-based approach here is still a lot slower – shot to shot times on the 1020 are still over three seconds – but the important thing is that the ‘PureView’ vision is fully realised on Windows Phone with this update.

In fact, in terms of image quality, I’d declare the Lumia 1020 with Black to be nigh on ‘perfect’, and you’d hopefully agree, given the images above? Aside from faster shot to shot times (achievable perhaps with a 1020 successor in 2014 with four times the chipset speed?), there’s almost nothing that can be improved on here.

Let’s hope the Nokia imaging team with Microsoft’s help continues to improve the 1020 and its successors.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!
