jolla-devices

Quick heads up on this translation from Janne. As you know, the Jolla phone is currently exclusive to DNA in Finland. Elisa are also interested but see more work needs doing to refine Sailfish and Jolla phone.

An Elisa manager is quoted as saying (my translation): "It is in consumer's interest to have plenty of choice. We'll gladly take Jolla into our sales mix, but at present it isn't a mass product. Jolla has to do plenty with the performance of the phone."

Contrary to the article, I do know of at least one case where a DNA store was reported to have a queue for Jollas in the first morning. I'd expect this to be the case in a few places at least, although of course the only really big queue was the pre-sale event queue.

Cheers Janne for the tip!

Qualcomm 805 CES preview demoes

Screen Shot 2014-01-05 at 20.21.15

Here are some Qualcomm 805 demoes, the latest version of Qualcomm’s powerhouse chip.

This one show’s OptiZoom. It reminds me of the facial recognition feature of Logitech webcams, whereby it zooms into the faces on the fly. If you move out, it moves out. I think the Kinect 2 with Skype does this too.

Here, you can do this with objects. You tap the object and as it moves around, the viewfinder will zoom accordingly.

Now onto something called Chroma Flash. I think the Fuji Z30 had this feature (and was one of the reasons I wanted to update my Fuji Z10 to back in the day). It allows you to take two pictures, one with flash and one without flash on quick succession. This eliminates the decision of taking a picture with or without flash to see which would look better.

But it does something a little different in that you end up with one picture because it combines the two so you get the sharpness with flash but the natural colours. Well more natural.

Finally processor action shot demo. This one can track an object and set exposure to that object. Another feature lets you set a line on the screen and once the object passes that line, it begins filming.

This and even more computational imaging should be seen in the 1020′s camera successor. Moreover, there should be faster processing of all those billion pixels that 41MP sensor is handling.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!

Nokia Camera Gallery lock without Nokia Black?

Posted: 05 Jan 2014 05:58 AM PST

This is just something random I noticed whilst I was taking pictures from the lecture slides.

I thought that with Nokia Black update, one of the Nokia specific features was being able to bypass the lock screen with Nokia Camera (as with the original wp camera app). As part of this update, the gallery icon become replaced with a lock button. (with the wp camera ui, you can only view the pictures you took when opening the camera from a locked state).

I haven’t got Nokia Black yet or update 3, just Amber but for some reason the camera is periodically acting like it has Nokia Black.

Anyone else see this?
