Name that Nokia: Owls dancing to a Nokia Phone Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:43 PM PST
Currently Reddit’s top story, here are some owls which begin to dance once this Nokia is put in front of them whilst playing a song.

Yet another…WP Notifications concept for WP 8.1 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 11:05 AM PST Here’s another Notification Centre concept. The descriptions in the picture are pretty self explanatory. A little bit like Peter’s Hyperspace concept, pressing back reveals the notifications. Instead of pressing back and then swiping to see notifications, you get a little window peak, just right to the most recently used app.I’m not quite sure if those icons are just status indicators enlarged or possibly quick launch icons (e.g. the settings cog). It would be nice to be the latter. At the moment, it seems the official method (according to rumours) is a long and short gesture from the top that gives access to notifications control and quick settings. This concept method might please the purists that hate the idea of having another pull down. Via: Reddit |

For those who want a big phablet but without the big price, they can opt for the Nokia Lumia 1320. Alternatively there’s the popular 525
Here’s Gadget’s Boy giving a run down of the features in the 1320.

Nokia’s cute and funny 404 page – shocked 1020 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 10:46 AM PST Twitter’s got Fail Whale, Imgur’s got the giraffe. When a webpage goes missing or stops working, it usually causes some frustration. Some sites have taken it upon themselves to make light of this matter with a little humour. I’ve not come across this myself, but someone posted on Reddit Nokia’s Error 404 page which a shocked Nokia Lumia 1020, the iconic camera circle acting as :O. |
WP Outselling iPhone in 24 Countries, 2nd Most Popular OS in 14 Countries. Posted: 07 Jan 2014 09:50 AM PST We’ve heard multiple different stories about how Windows Phone (and Nokia of course) were gaining traction world-wide, most of these included outselling the iPhone, while Android remained dominant. Now Microsoft have shared some official numbers, which state that Windows Phone has been outselling the iPhone in 24 countries, and has even achieved #2 position in 14 countries. On the US front, with the help of the Lumia 521 and 520 Windows Phone’s market-share has seen a slight increase of 2.1% sales in the last three months of 2013 (making up 5% of the total sales in end of 2013). Microsoft exces further claimed that Windows Phone’s performance “was making it the fastest selling smartphone platform globally”. Read more at TechRadar and Kantar Jay:
WP is pretty much Nokia Lumia so it may be possible to accurately estimate Nokia’s sales for Q4. Although this is merely anecdotal, I’m seeing a lot more high end Lumias here in the UK than I have before. Also quite a few 520s too. All is relative. Selling more than you have before is easy if your numbers are relatively not that high to begin with (exaggerated more so by percentage displays). Whilst selling more iPhone in 24 countries sounds good, it doesn’t mean it’s number 2 OS in 24 countries because who says iPhone was second to displace? Even so, without actual numbers it doesn’t mean much. But, growth is growth and it’s remarkable considering the frozen pace at which Microsoft’s team of mitten chained WP8 people attempt to ‘improve’ the platform. It’s good news regardless as it shows that some people do prefer to get a WP over the glamorous iPhone. WP sells more units than iPhone in the following countries:
WP is also number 2 behind Android in these countries:

Nokia Twists the Knife of the Samsung and Michael Bay Fiasco With Their Latest Tweet Posted: 07 Jan 2014 09:35 AM PST In case you missed the CES action, Samsung brought action movie producer Michael Bay on stage to help promote their new 4K TVs, instead Bay flopped completely; losing track of his scripted lines, which caused the teleprompter to go off. He then decided to “Wing it” and when that didn’t work out he just walked off stage mid-presentation… yes it was that bad. The ever thoughtful Nokia twitter account took this opportunity to remind us of some do’s and dont’s when presenting a 4K TV; including using One Note to keep your thoughts straight.
If you’re up for it watch the Michael Bay fiasco at the video below:

Pretty PureView Flickr Gallery: “Massis” Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:22 PM PST In the 808 post yesterday, I saw a comment at AAS highlighting their 808 PureView Gallery. I took a nosy and thought I’d share it with you guys cos it’s really good. It’s by Massis. Check out this stitching of a panorama which produces an interesting warped tunnel. I also like the reverse effect where it turns the panorama into a mini world. There’s a whole load of stunning images here. |
