MNB Reader generated: Skype Ban Lifted from UAE

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 01:30 PM PDT

One of our readers Vineet contacted us with an interesting piece of information, for the past few years most forms of VOIP contact have been blocked in UAE (to the great benefit of carriers there). Apparently the ban on Skype in the UAE has finally been lifted which should make for interesting changes in regards to Windows Phone’s deep integration of Skype services (which you can conveniently check out in the video below).

So Etisalat (the largest operator in the UAE duopoly – n the Goliath to Du’s David) unblocked Skype. Thus far, there was a blanket ban on VoIP services which adversely affected MS and Nokia since Skype is soon becoming the centrepiece of all communication in all of MS’s products (Xbox, Win8, RT, WP etc)

This is especially relevant in light of the fact that the new Z10s don’t work with the BIS plans. UAE is a BB dominated market purely due to BBM (in turn due to BIS).

Nokia Conv: What “Connecting People” Really Means

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:05 PM PDT

Nokia,_Connecting_PeopleThe official Nokia Conversation blog have posted a little something about Nokia’s Slogan/Mission statement, the ever famous “connecting people”; it’s worth a quick read to check out some interesting facts and a refresher of the features they’re offering.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/04/09/what-connecting-people-really-means/

Some of the “thing” Nokia have brought to the table is mainly they’re great effort at bringing data consumption to lower limits and lower prices, especially with the Beta Xpress browser on Ashas and Lumais. Also mentioned is connecting people through deep Social network integration (so I sense a dig at Facebook home?)- nokia state that connecting people is more than just using a SINGLE social network, which is why WP is perfect for their mission:

To us, the social experience on a mobile device means much more than just deeply embedding access to one particular social network. It means giving people the ability to connect widely with others in many different ways.

That's one of the key reasons we chose Windows Phone as our primary smartphone platform. The deeply integrated features cover not just Facebook, but Twitter and LinkedIn as well.

I for one fully agree, WP does have some of the greatest social integration, and all those “features” that Facebook Home brings have been in WP for quite a while now, Jay touched on that in his post/rant about FB Home:

Connecting People and Putting People First – Facebook Home and Facebook Phone – Nokia Lumia

Also do check out the video comparison between BB’s BBHub and WP’s Me Hub where I touched on those points, especially seeing how BB Hub is in some facts superior to WP. The message we need to get across to MSFT is that innovation doesn’t stop once you have something new as a refresher every so often, because innovations never stay new. They’re bound to be copied, ripped or “a source of influence” to others who can only improve on what you’ve done. The same applies to Nokia as well in terms of camera and screen innovations both of which have already been “ripped” by HTC (with the One’s feeble attempt at OIS) and Samsung (with super sensitive touch on-board the S4).

Breathtaking Fan-made Render of the Lumia 928

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 11:42 AM PDT

nokia_lumia_928_concept_by_jonas_daehnert-d60w9qnI’m in love all over again! At first I wasn’t a fan of the Lumia 928′s design; but the render above has stolen my heart! Sure it might not follow the curved fabula design of the 928 and all its predecessors  but it might just be something even better. The phone reminds me of the 810 more than anything, with its strong corners and flat screens, and although it might not be all curvy and sleek; the design looks to be the perfect match for the Windows Phone Metro interface.

And in case you get the feeling you’ve seen this before, it does bear a striking resemblance to the rendered concepts for a Microsoft surface phone, don’t you think?

Four Xbox Live Titles from Miniclip Free to Download!

Xbox live games are pretty awesome, but unfortunately they’re rarely free (I believe there’s only about 4 free Xbox live titles 2 form Microsoft: Alphajax and Wordament, and two from GetGlu: Bug village and gun bros). Thankfully that’s changed for now, Miniclip have discounted four of their biggest titles to the low price of free!

Grab the games from here (install them wirelessly through your computer for added awesome point)

RM-877 Spotted Heading to At&t

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 08:39 AM PDT

Nokia+logo,+Helsinki,+Finland+87570Another interesting news hint from the AdDuplex report is the spotting of an unreleased device for At&t labeled as RM-877.

This could very well be the Nokia Eos; or some other At&t exclusive device; any ideas?

Windows Phone 8 to Support 1080p Within the Year

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 08:19 AM PDT

DSC01507According to the Verge, Microsoft will be releasing GDR3 (general distribution release 3) late this year (holiday season. The update will supposedly bring support for 1080p screens as well as more processor options; paving the way for phablet like devices (with larger screens and more processors).

We understand that the GDR3 update will also provide support for new Qualcomm processors, allowing manufacturers to opt for quad-core devices with Windows Phone.

Apparently this GDR3 update is NOT part of the rumored Microsoft Blue, which is set to follow it later on.

-Didn’t MSFT say that WP8 supports up to 64 cores? Then why do they need a processor update to support Quad cored

Google to buy Whatsapp?

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:04 AM PDT

whatsapp

Several sources are saying Google is supposedly trying to buy Whatsapp for a billion dollars. Whatsapp is a popular cross platform messenger service.

The Telegraph says Facebook might be looking to buy it too.

MS should go buy it and integrate it with Skype :p Ha, no?

Well I’d rather it not be in the hands of Google (who would either prevent the service coming to Nokia Lumia/WP or discontinue it randomly) or Facebook (who, whilst now owning Instagram still isn’t releasing one for WP/Nokia Lumia). Do you reckon either would do a good enough job to keep the service multi-platform?

Victory: Nokia wins LaptopMag poll again – Congrats Nokia Lumia 920 – cheers to all who voted!

SPM_2013_WINNER

We asked Nokia fans to come together and vote for Nokia and thanks to those votes (and the voting of several other sites that were fans of Nokia Lumia 920) Nokia is crowned winner for the second year in a row from LaptopMag.

You beat the very tough competition with the Android heavy weights, SGSIV and HTC One. The finals however was a new contender – a BlackBerry! The Z10 went up against the Nokia Lumia 920 and at first people thought it would be an easy win for the 920. But don’t underestimate BlackBerry fans, who were quickly closing in on the Nokia Lumia 920s

http://blog.laptopmag.com/nokia-lumia-920-wins-4th-annual-smartphone-madness-2013

I’ve been away from my emails all day yesterday so I didn’t get to see the Final results until now. Congratulations Nokia Lumia 920!

Good fight, BB!

For me that post was more about the community rather than the manufacturer or the product. Thanks for coming together to share and show your support for Nokia. It might make negligible difference to sales, but you still made your mark by voting. We get to rub our ego for a little bit too and it means just that little bit more knowing how much BBZ10 fans wanted to win this.  :p

Cheers everyone for the tip and for voting!
