Windows Phone 8 GDR3 to bring support for more tiles?

Posted: 11 Apr 2013 06:04 PM PDT

GDR3 mockup more tiles

According to Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft is going to solve the issue of wasted space on bigger displays, but essentially, filling them up – with more tiles that is. The rumour is that there will be support for a third column of medium sized tiles. Windows Phone Daily made the mockup you see above, and I actually quite like it. At first, I thought maybe it was too cluttered, but now, I think it works, especially since we have heard that WP8 will have bigger and better displays.

I recently had the discussion on twitter that MS may soon run out of UI/UX innovation, but hopefully this is the least exciting change they make. I’d love to have those 3/4 tiles – both landscape and portrait and the folder implementation. Oh, and of course, our very own Peter Lackman’s concept of “Hyperspace” notifications.

So my last addition is, is more better?

AT&T Nokia Lumia 920s get Firmware Update to 1232.5962.1314.0001

Update COgs

We heard recently that 1232.5957.1308.00xx was rolling out globally, after being on AT&T branded devices for a few weeks now (as well as shipped on new devices and flashed to existing). In that time, it seems AT&T customers were suffering from some connectivity issues. Namely, their data connection would drop out and be unreliable on the Lumia 920, when on LTE.

In new Nokia fashion, they have pushed out the update (yes, literally a matter of days from confirmation of the bug to a solution). The update is reportedly live for those of you with an AT&T branded Lumia 920. For the rest of the world owners, enjoy your 5957.1308 update, and let us know if you have any issues.

Video: Sharing to Instagram on Windows Phone Via Instagraph

Posted: 11 Apr 2013 07:04 AM PDT

wp_ss_20130411_0001We’ve heard quite a bit about the new app Instagraph, which lets you post pictures to your instagram account on Windows Phone, provided you already have an account. Well the app is finally int he store (for $2.49) and you can download it and give it a spin, or check out the video below and see it in all its glory:

The pictures that I had Queued uploaded after about 30 minutes of waiting, but the point is they finally go through. The app itself is super smooth and responsive, easy to use and seems well built. Unfortunately the servers are currently getting hammered by users so it might take a while to get your photo posted.

One feature I’d like to see added in the future is the ability to share the picture you’re uploading to your twitter account (as you can through the official instagram app).

Instagraph is priced at $2.49 in the marketplace and you can grab it from the QR code down below. Currently it’s only available for WP8 devices, but a WP7.X app is in the works.

Patent Details Nokia tablet Equipped With Kickstand and Keyboard; Beat Microsoft to it.

Posted: 11 Apr 2013 06:38 AM PDT

269971bc27772b1034a7b664bd4149a5Nokia have been toying with tablet designs and concepts for a while now, everybody knows this; but nobody knows exactly what or when it’s coming. A recently unveiled patent application shows a Nokia tablet concept with a keyboard and a kickstand that “envelopes” the device (which matches the rumors we’ve heard before). The patent application was filed before Microsoft unveiled its surface tablet; which has its now iconic flip out kickstand (which seems to be  the only feature they’re capable of marketing).

There are rumors on the interwebs that Nokia had a hand in designing the Surface with Microsoft, or at least some part in “inspiring it”; given strength by Microsoft’s choice of colors for the tablet’s clip on covers (Cyan, Magenta and black). Of course there is no proof of that, but certainly is intriguing.

Microsoft, Nokia, Oracle and others file antitrust against ‘Trojan Horse’ activities of Android?

Quick heads up just to share the story if you missed it  from a couple of days ago:

I believe it’s about Google app bundling into Android, getting unfair advantage over consumer data. Whilst Android is free, Android partners are required to install a set of Google apps in-order to be Android certified. The FairSearch group, consisting of MS, Nokia, Oracle and others has asked the EU Antitrust commission to investigate these alleged antitrust practices by Google

Oh, Trojan Horse, phrase of 2011 :p

Cheers all for the tip
