At&t Increases Phone Subsidy Period on Contract From 20 months to 2 years

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 02:38 PM PDT

In a blog post today At&t announced that the new upgrade cycle for phones bought on contract will now become 24 months instead of the current 20; adding an extra 4 months of contract lock down. At&t was one of the first carriers to welcome Nokia back to the US with the lumia 900, 920 and 820 all as exclusives; (however recently Verizon has become the #1 WP8 carrier in the US); so this is likely to affect many future upgrades (and piss a fair bit of you off).

That new limit applies both to new customers and to anyone whose contract ends in March 2014 or later — meaning most people currently on a contract will get one more 20-month upgrade before the change takes effect

Once again I’m thankful that I buy my own phones straight-up and take them wherever I want; land of the free eh? (but then again at least it’s not Verizon)

WP8 UI concepts inspired from W8 + New Metro

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 11:15 AM PDT

iKFY2oAdEBY6lHere are some design concepts for WP8 brought over from W8. After hearing about the WP8.1 leaks, seeing various notification styles, mdtauk on TheVerge forums decided to put his own spin onto the WP designs.  Note above, like Peter’s concept, the notifications are brought up by opening the task switcher. Though there’s no panel to tap, the notification message is at the bottom.

More personalisation on the tiles as in W8.

Alternatively, from a different designer, there’s a different metro style (Via Reddit)

Michael: The screenshots above are actually from an Android Skin. I was meaning to post about it, then I saw Jay’s article, so I figure I would attach it.

MyDreamNokia #92: Nokia Lumia X Windows Phone Concept

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 09:27 AM PDT

MNBNokia Lumia X The s4 rival(1)

MDN #92 comes from Marcellus. It looks to be a very slim device. He mentions the specs being unrealistic but I’d say they’s kinda standard for 2013.

A phone I made in a paint program to be the galaxy s4 rival. I named it the Lumia X as a play on the numeral 10 but to mean Lumia 1000 maybe. Really I would want this to be a new series of Lumia’s above the 9xx series.

The specs are pretty unrealistic and physically impossible but here they are.

  • Dimensions: 68.3 mm x 134.9 mm x 8 mm
  • 68.3 mm x 134.9 mm x 8.7 mm (with Camera hump)
  • Weight: 140 g
  • Memory: 2 GB (US Variant) 4GB (Global)
  • Storage: 32 GB or 64 GB
  • Removable Storage: up to 64 GB micro SD
  • Display: 5 inches (1920 x 1080) , 500 ppi, Pure Motion, HD Screen, Gorilla Glass 3
  • Battery: Non-removable, 3000 mAH, Qi wireless charging (optional)

  • Colors:

Yellow, Red, Cyan, Black, White and Magenta

  • Rear Camera:

10 MP PureView & Carl Zeiss lens
10 lens (vs the 6 lens in the 925)
OIS
Dual LCD flash & Xenon Flash
HD Video capture (720p & 1080p)

  • Front Camera:

2.5 MP
1080p video recording

  • It looks thin in the picture but I definitely don’t want my dream phone to be anorexic so its as thin as the Lumia 925 but its display matches the s4 at 5 inches.

  • Finally for availability I would make available to everyone but ATT since they’re gonna have EOS anyway.

Cheers Marcellus for the tip

WP8 Blue eBay Nokia Lumia 920 recovered by MS

The excitement yesterday over the leaked WP8 new firmware with such things the new notification centre and improved calendar view has been recovered by Microsoft.

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/06/08/chinese-lumia-920-ships-with-new-firmware-brings-notifications-daily-calendar-view-close-background-tasks-and-much-more/

The temporary owner of the new WP8-Blue 920 from eBay will be reimbursed AND a new phone. TheVerge’s sources say that what we saw was WP8 Blue.

Questions:

  • When are we getting this?
  • Who can get this? (All WP8 users? WP8 users with certain RAM? WP8 users on certain networks?)
  • How close is what we saw to the final iteration?
  • What else is there that we haven’t yet seen?
  • What under the hood improvements might there be? (Speed changes, battery improvements, new features/hardware compatibility etc)
