Quad Core 720p Nokia Lumia Pops Up on Benchmark Site

Posted: 16 Jun 2013 12:52 PM PDT

quad-core-lumia_thumbA while back we heard rumors that quad core processors on Windows Phone would be available later this year when GDR3 rolled out (plus full HD screens); the first of these devices has appeared on a benchmarking site “GFXBench”. The unnamed phone has a quad core processor, Adreno 305 (same unit s the 720, 620 and 520; HUH?)  and surprisingly a 720p screen rather than the 768p we’ve gotten used to in Nokia phone. Of course the new aspect ratio might just be as a place filler in prototype devices (hopefully in place of a 1080p screen).

Keep in mind that the original EOS rumors claimed that there was a possibility that we’d see a quad core variant of the EOS; and it seems that the production cycle at Nokia is working full steam with multiple devices on the way. Either way this year looks to be AMAZING.

Rumors: 2 Nokia Phablets in the Pipeline + Low Cost Lumia 920

Posted: 16 Jun 2013 09:01 AM PDT

Nokia+logo,+Helsinki,+Finland+87570According to the latest source of rumors via NokiaPoweruser there are a couple new devices on the way for a September/October announcement/release. Mainly two phablet Lumias, starting with a 5.5″-6″ screen with a camera module similar to the Lumia 925, the next generation of which would have a higher Megapixel camera and a Lytro (adjustable focus) setup.

The other device is said to be a cheaper version of the lumia 920; aimed to compete against a lower end iPhone (if it comes); the rumored specs are:

  • released along with Phablet in September-October, but not necessarily on the same date.
  • Will sport 4.7 inch WXGA CBD AMOLED display.
  • Will have 8 MP Carl–Zeiss optics camera with F/1.9 aperture for low-light imaging. No OIS though.
  • Lumia 720 like design with minor tweaks and may have slimmer profile, Lightweight.
  • May come with similar CPU/GPU combo as Lumia 920 and will be Nokia's answer to low-cost iPhone.
  • Will be priced very aggressively and will replace Lumia 82X range.

Honestly those specs don’t sound like a “cheaper” Lumia 920, and the whole strategy of the Lumia lineup was to bring down the features of the 920 to lower pricepoints, so a cheaper 920 wouldn’t make much sense. To me it sounds like some of this is wishful thinking but you never know, as always keep your bowl of salt at the ready.

Download Lumia 925 Original LockScreen/Media Pack

Posted: 16 Jun 2013 05:35 AM PDT

MNBIMG_4965One of the things Nokia seemed to have given up on when switching to Windows Phone was shipping the phones with preloaded media, for a while now the only preloaded media you get was the default Windows Phone images (counting down from 8/7 to 1). For some reason (no that we’re complaining) Nokia have decided to add some fresh pictures to the Lumia 925 which you can download below courtesy of WindowsMania.pl which contains 26 high resolution (1280×768) images perfect for your lockscreen.

Personally I don’t care much seeing how Windows Phone has apps that rotate your lockscreens on their own giving you a fresh new picture every time (I use photostream); but I know there are a lot of fans for these media packs out there, so enjoy.

Multiple Lumia 920s (Running Android) in Boost Australia’s Zombie Apocalypse Campaign

Posted: 16 Jun 2013 05:15 AM PDT

Boost Australia have some weird ad campaign that somehow involves a zombie apocalypse, multiple Lumia 920′s (running Android for some reason) and some really hot girls (the red head *drool*). They’re pretty random but entertaining if you have nothing else to do, so check them out below.

Also i think the need for simulated screens doesn’t come from ignorance about what OS these phones are running, but probably has more to do with Android notifications being larger and more customizable? (rather than a small toast notification on the top of the screen), although it does seem to look like they’re chatting with a sort of Snapchat client in one of them.

Nokia Meme on S4 zoom non pocket friendly – teaser for own Zoom reinvented? (Actual thickness of S4 Zoom pls? 25+mm?)

NokiaLumiameme4

Nokia’s got a set of Memes on NokConv one of which is condescending Wonka.

It reads: Oh so You’ve got a smartphone with a zoom lens. I bet that fits in your pocket perfectly.

Nokia is having their own event, July 11th in New York to unveil Zoom reinvented. I do remember mumblings from some Nokians about proper optical zoom coming at the start of the year. Perhaps this is finally it. In a way, 41mp simulates some zoom (with pros/cons of its own)

One thing that bothers me is how the same sources can make jabs at one phone’s thickness and question pocketability, and in the same breath say a much thicker smartphone is pocketable.

e.g. GSM Arena says later in the review the 920′s thickness makes it more comfortable to hold. but earlier they say “This one is definitely not for every pocket, or hand”

However on the S4 Zoom, they take a more kinder approach, “ quite thick and heavy compared to a modern smartphone, but still pocketable, unless you’re wearing tight jeans”

Let’s take a look again shall we:

If the 920 IS 10.7mm, there’s no way in hell the hump on the S4 Zoom is 15.4mm (which is already quite thick for most, e.g. 808 at 13.9mm at hump). Look how much of the top finger it covers on the second picture. That’s around 20mm already. Unless the hands are small but then obviously the rest of the proportions will be wrong.

How thick is the S4 Zoom in reality and why is no one mentioning actual thickness unless what I’m seeing is an optical illusion.

Humour me here. I adjusted the picture to make the length to be about 125mm (it’s 125.5mm length or 4.904inches).

The hump is clearly over an inch thick, 27-28mm which you can pretty much round up to almost 3cm in fact. I believe a few people mentioned this in the comments already. 28mm thickness, and all we hear is that it can still fit in your pocket as a comment whilst a 10.7mm is said to be not for every pocket or hand? LOL. I’m not saying they should let the 920 off on being ‘thicker’ than the other slimmer smartphones at the time, just be consistent and call what’s thick, fat (and ugly) what it is.

It could be some flawed presumption on my behalf that the height would remain proportional to the thickness.

If anyone has seen one in person, please feel free to let us know how thick it actually is.

Would people forgive thickness and weight if the overall benefit is there? Like the phablet craze which initially was laughed at until it made sense for some people to have a choice on having a larger screen.

If Nokia makes a thicker phone, they get slated. If someone else makes a thicker phone, it seems fine. Oh well, hopefully it means more room for thicker phones? Or perhaps slim phones with a slightly thicker hump?

Nokia EOS Already Undergoing Mass Production?

Posted: 16 Jun 2013 01:49 AM PDT

EOS MassThe latest leak from China comes in the form of yet another look at the metal/aluminum casing for the EOS; but wait what’s that in the background? It looks like there are plenty more where that came from, hopefully a sign of the EOS being in its final production stage? Dare we hope for a release within a week of launch? Or possibly even same day?

What do you guys think?
