Concept: Nokia Lumia Smartwatch

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:13 PM PST

When it comes to Smartwatches everyone has his own preference, which is a little bit surprising considering how new this genre is! Some will argue for round screens some will argue for color and some will argue for the fashion statement.

Anyways a while back we took a look at what Nokia R&D was playing around with on that matter, but today however we’ll show you a very cool concept Lumia Smartwatch which was posted on TheVerge forums  by a very creative designer called  pirelaneuman.

smartwatch concept

The first thing I adored about the video is the new possible Logo for the Lumia line (after D&S sale) as it compliments so many things about Windows new design languages (particularly Bing’s new logo), it also looks like two Windows logos representing connectivity with Windows Phone and finally the logo gives that premium brand vibe.

Concept2

The concept shows the best use case of live tiles ever, glance information about notifications on your apps, while specifically designed to use the power of AMOLEDs screens and minimize power consumption.
Not to be outdone by Samsung Gear the concept also shoves a Camera sensor up top, which I didn’t care for in the Galaxy and will not care for it in a smart watch, although I would like to see a smartwatch with a view finder of my Smartphones camera with a shutter button.

Enjoy the video and do share with us in the comments; is that a Smartwatch you’ve been waiting for? How would you improve on it?

Due to Nokia, Windows Phone climbs yet again in Europe, overtakes iOS in Italy

The blogosphere is rife with results from Kantar World Panel which oddly looks super positive about Windows Phone again. This is said to be attributed to Nokia’s sales entirely.

Windows Phone now makes up one in 10 smartphone sales across the five major European markets*, has overtaken iOS in Italy, and is gaining momentum in emerging markets.

http://www.kantarworldpanel.com/Global/News/Nokia-and-Windows-global-momentum-continues

*The big five European markets includes UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

Result in the UK shows that in 3 months, it has gone from 4.2 to 11.4%. Note that it was at 12% in August - possibly against new phone launches, particularly the new iPhone.

In Europe it sees WP go to 9.8% from 4.6% three months previously (9.2% in August)

In Italy, WP oddly climbs to 13.7% overtaking iOS despite the launch of the new iPhone at 10.2%. Can it keep it up during October? Italy was at 9.5% last month. Italy has been a bit up and down with WP before.

In USA, it’s now at 4.6% (3% last month). Spain 3.7% in Sept and 2.2%  in August.

There is a slight dip however looking at previous month in these regions

  • France 10.7% Sept, 10.8% Aug
  • Germany 8.5% Sept, 8.8% Aug
  • Australia 9.3% Sept, 6.5% Aug

It seems Italy and Spain’s growth have pushed the EU5 for WP despite the slight declines in France, Germany and UK. Australia is of course not part of that :p.

BlackBerry’s $4.7B deal fails, CEO Thorsten Heins is out

Not only is this quite major news but for a long time, Nokia fans have been looking at BlackBerry’s bleak future and making comparisons. Some said that BB were doing well having stuck to their guns and sticking to BBOS versus Nokia going a different route on WP. Both of course haven’t gone to plan. Whilst WP is growing and Lumia is on record sales, this still wasn’t enough to keep Nokia from selling off their D&S division.

Plans to take BlackBerry private in a 4.7 billion dollar Fairfax deal have failed. Thorsten Heins has been ejected and now the company is planning to raise 1 billion dollars selling convertible notes to investors.

Is this going to make a difference or just delaying the inevitable for BB? How much is Heins walking away with? Could BB’s fate have been different? If so how? Earlier release of BB10? Like if Maemo/MeeGo was released much sooner?

Nokia Illusionist: Windows 8 RT 8″ Tablet From Nokia

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:55 AM PST

DSC04218Last month at Nokia World, Nokia finally took the wraps off their much awaited tablet, the Lumia 2520; however it seems they aren’t done with the tablet arena just yet. According to @evleaks Nokia’s second tablet, code-named “illusionist” is also a Windows 8 RT tablet, but in the 8 inch range rather than the 10.1 inches of the 2520.

I know many would prefer a Windows pro version of the 2520, rather than an 8″ version RT; but what do you think of an 8″ 2520 look-alike? Interesting or boring?

Leaked: Lumia 929 for Verizon; 20 Mp Camera, 1080p 5″ Display and Snapdragon 800

WPC have gotten their hands on some high res pictures of Verizon’s upcoming Lumia, the 929. Similar to the 928 it seems Nokia can’t keep this one under wraps, as it has now been fully leaked from all angles, plus a detailed list of specs. The 929 is essentially the 1520 in a 5″ body, it has the same 1080p display, the same processor and multiple high quality mics, however it is missing the Micro SD card.

  • Qualcomm Quad-core Snapdragon 800 at 2.2 GHz
  • 5 inch AMOLED display, 1080 x 1920
  • 2 GB of RAM; 32 GB of internal storage (no micro SD)
  • 20 MP PureView rear camera with oversampling (16 MP + 5 MP photos); Front facing camera
  • Dual LED flash
  • NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE
  • Qi wireless charging
  • At least three HAAC microphones
  • Data Sense, NFL Mobile, Verizon Tones, VZ Navigator, My Verizon Mobile, Nokia StoryTeller, Nokia Screen Beamer
  • Available colors: glossy white or matte black

Apparently the 929 although in plastic, has a metal band around the frame of the phone to give it a sturdier feel. A good move in my opinion, as it already looks more”premium” than the 928 which gives off a “cheap” vibe, possibly due to the high gloss finish on the white version?

As is usual for Verizon, they’ve gone with the safe bland colors, glossy white and matte black.

Leaked: Lumia 525 AKA Nokia Glee

Nokia’s next low end device, the Lumia 525 has been leaked thanks to some Chinese certification processes (Chinese equivalent of FCC?). The phone as seen above doesn’t look any different from the Lumia 520, in fact it’s almost identical. However the Lumia 525 is rumored to have 1Gb of ram rather than the 512Mbs that the 520 had.

*You can also note that the screen is the same non-CBD version the 520 had.

Nokia Lumia 1020 shortlisted in Stuff’s ‘Gadget of the Year’. Go vote!

Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 12.36.35

Nokia tweeted that their Nokia Lumia 1020 was shortlisted for Stuff’s Gadget of the Year.

You know that as Nokia fans we love to support Nokia in polls to help them get the recognition they deserve. Even if just one more person online becomes aware of how good these Nokia devices are, the vote has been worth it :) .  If you wish to do the same, you can vote here:

http://www.stuff.tv/awards/stuff-gadget-awards-2013-pick-readers-gadget-year

Despite the competition upping the camera stakes, the Lumia 1020 is still the best cameraphone ever made thanks to its incredible 41MP camera and clever superpixel tech which combines info from multiple pixels to reduce noise and improve low-light shots. Combined with a zoom that won’t make your photos look like they were taken with a potato, you can finally ditch your compact for good.

Press Release: Samsung extends patent license agreement with Nokia for five years; additional compensation settled

Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 12.33.57Samsung extends the patent license agreement between Nokia and Samsung for five years; companies will enter into binding arbitration to settle the amount of additional compensation.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced that Samsung has extended a patent license agreement between Nokia and Samsung for five years. The agreement would have expired at the end of 2013. According to the agreement, Samsung will pay additional compensation to Nokia for the period commencing from January 1, 2014 onwards, and the amount of such compensation shall be finally settled in a binding arbitration which is expected to be concluded during 2015.

“This extension and agreement to arbitrate represent a hallmark of constructive resolution of licensing disputes, and are expected to save significant transaction costs for both parties”, said Paul Melin, Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Nokia.

Nokia will retain its industry-leading patent portfolio following the proposed transaction to sell substantially all of its Devices & Services business to Microsoft and sees further opportunity to create value by investing in innovation, and by actively managing its patent portfolio and licensing activities.

Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 12.26.35

Miguel who was also at the Digi Expo in Helsinki got a chance to try the Nokia Lumia 1520 and snapped a picture with the Samsung ATIV S. Previously, that 4.8″ screen was the biggest screened WP device up until the 1080p 6″ Nokia Lumia 1520 arrived (and its brother 1320).

There’s also a pic with the HTC One.

  • Thin and glossy red finish. Fingerprint magnet
  • Gorgeous screen.
  • snappy and nice to hold

  • here maps and other apps launched quickly and everything felt smooth.
  • a lot of ports
  • power keyboard was nice feature, but together with the tab was a bit heavy… 1.3 kgs
