Google’s phone that’s made to capture those moments goes up against Nokia’s phone which excels best at capturing moments in all conditions.

The Nexus 5 looks oddly hazy in some pictures, no?

Future WP devices up to 7″ – taking advantage of the bigger screen (6″ proto pics)

This post must have been before the Nokia Lumia 1520 was announced as they keep referring to it as a “Prototype 6″ device”.

Anyway, the main article talks about taking advantage of the bigger screen. In the Nokia Lumia 1520, Nokia introduced the highest resolution WP screen as well as the biggest WP screen available.

However, thanks to Microsoft’s amazing know-how about developing software, the 1520 completely takes advantage of having a larger screen, like, say the Galaxy Note 3. Oh wait, no it doesn’t. Oh you, Microsoft.

Well, it does at times display more information on screen (e.g. more tiles, more apps in the store etc). But there aren’t added value operations such as, say, snapping apps in multitasked windows, as you’d expect since W8 does this.

Here are some screenshots where they attempt to utilise the screensize better.

Note the font size remains similar but due to being on a larger display, you can see more.

Here’s an even better use..

Not only is there more visible in the list, note that the product info information is placed on the side too.

Is this extra work for the developer?  In WP8 GD3, it’s possible for apps to detect the phone’s screen size and display optimised information accordingly.

Will there even be a WP by the time the 7″ devices are available? What if WP is blended into RT? I’d love that metro experience on a bigger phablet.

Video: Even smoother stabilisation on the Nokia Lumia 1520 OIS – low light sample

It appears from this video that the stabilisation has gone up another notch in the Nokia Lumia 1520. In low light, it doesn’t exhibit that slight wobble when walking. OIS on the likes of the 1020/92x is amazing for panning/holding steady but walking produces a slight ‘wobble’. It’s much better than competition without OIS or those even with OIS as theirs looks like they’re on a roller coaster, but it’s getting closer and closer to hand held stabilisation that looks like it’s using an additional external stabilisation mount.

Weekend Watch: Performance comparison – Quadcore Nokia Lumia 1520 vs 925 and 620

WP brought speed and lag free operation even when it was a single core experience. From the most expensive to the cheapest handset, you still got a great experience. The same was the case with the dual core bunch and it’s interesting to see that from the main operations, the 925 and even 620 are just as fast as the 1520.

But where the speed and power difference is seen is in third party apps and web browser rendering. Particularly those requiring additional processing power.

  • 620, 1GHz Dual Core, 512MB RAM
  • 925, 1.5GHz Dual Core, 1GB RAM
  • 1520, 2.2GHz Quad Core, 2GB RAM

In reviews of the 1520, one of the main points mentioned was the blazing speed WP seems to be on with this chip. The only “delay” is the transitions (originally used in smartphones to ‘hide’ processing delay, but also useful as ‘signposting’ to tell the user what action will happen next).
