Nokia Lumia 1020 – made to capture the moments that matter (1020 vs Google Nexus 5)

Google’s ads for the Nexus 5 touts the imaging capabilities in its camera phone. But really, the one made to capture moments that matter is the Nokia Lumia 1020.

AAWP have done a shootout comparing the latest from ElGoog against Nokia’s Lumia 1020 (which is going to get even better with improved software updates on the camera).

Even without touching the PureView zooming or the Xenon flash, both unique selling points for the Nokia Lumia 1020, it’s clear that basic ‘as is’ photos are better coloured and with less noise and more detail, when compared to the results from the Google Nexus 5. The 1020′s huge sensor, plus the oversampling system, is the main reason for this, of course, since the Nexus 5 has a typical 1/3″ class sensor.

At some point, surely, more manufacturers will start to catch up to Nokia in imaging and put in larger (and/or oversampling) sensors and a proper (Xenon) flash? We have seen Sony put in a larger sensor in its Z1, plus several devices with OIS now, but the gap between the Lumia 1020 and the ‘rest’ is still demonstrably huge.

It’s interesting to note how important camera is to smartphones. I want to reiterate this point as some have commented previously that camera is not a thought in consumers when clearly, with all these photo sharing sites, and all the focus of manufacturers to promote (and sometimes develop) their cameras, it’s clearly a factor worth considering and one where Nokia is at the top of their game.

Props where its due, the Nexus 5 does look like a decent camera phone too. But for pushing boundaries, for imaging/video go with the Nokia Lumia 1020. I am not sure how the 1520 fares to recommend that atm.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!

Nokia Guru – BH-121 Bluetooth Headset Schematic

When Nokia Guru was first heard, we were told it was like an iPod shuffle with NFC. So a small music device, capable of playing its own tunes.

When we saw the image, it reminded us of Nokia’s bluetooth headsets where you can plug in your own 3.5mm jack headphones to the receiving bluetooth piece (and there are several in Nokia’s range).

According to the designation, BH-121 indicate this is at least a bluetooth headset. What the supposed ‘shuffle’ bit is I’m not sure.
