More Nokia apps get updates for WP8

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 07:07 PM PST

wp8-nokia-appdate

My Lumia 820 had around 8 updates just appear, with 5 of them being Nokia apps. Only Audio and Nokia Maps had changelogs

Audio:
With this update you will get Audio leveling feature, to set the same playback volume for all music and video tracks.

Nokia Maps:

What’s New:
- new traffic layer improves reliability and quality of flow information

- get public transport schedules from the route planner

Access Point, Cinemagraph and Nokia Music didn’t have any changelog (at least that I noticed).

Update: WP Central have posted about this, and included info on the Cinemagraph update

Cinemagraph receives a most-welcomed upgrade – the ability to share your creations with the world. You can select 'share' from the app menu when viewing a picture in Cinemagraph and upload it via social media, email, or messaging. In all instances the image is uploaded to Nokia's servers and the recipients are sent a link to view the masterpiece, like mine below. The site is also mobile friendly, so if you send it as a text message to a buddy you can rest easy they'll be able to see it.

Video: Stephen Elop interviewed by YLE on Positive Nokia Lumia 920 feedback

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 08:57 AM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 16.48.03Whilst Nokia is facing tough times, there are glimmers of light at the end of that dark tunnel such as the positivity seen in the demand/reaction to the Nokia Lumia 920.

The 920 is a fantastic device, one that despite the lack of cohesive marketing, is delighting consumers that use it because it’s a great smartphone. Every day I’m finding something new to like about my Pikachu 920 :p. Elop notes that this positivity is at grass roots level, with consumers who have experienced the 920 going on to tell their friends how good it is (lol because Nokia can’t make ads for that job :p).

When asked whether Nokia was controlling stocks to thus create that image of demand, Elop says no. Nokia’s on a deliberate strategy to grow the production over time. Next, the positivity on Nokia that the interviewer feels towards Nokia recently. Elop notes that Nokia has been doing their very best work, whether Lumia 920 or Asha full touch. But now it’s not just Nokia saying that, but people who might love the Nokia but are crying out perhaps for the Yellow version (as you know I was doing :p) which creates a sense of hope. Nokia knows there’s more hard work to come. But there’s a sense that the SISU at Nokia is beginning to pay off and with that optimism will come more strength from the team as Nokia moves into 2013. Even though it might be the darkest time of the year in Finland because of the nature of the sun, it’s a little bit brighter at Nokia today.

When asked what Elop would say to the Finnish share holders, Elop says Thank You for supporting Nokia in her darkest days.

WPCentral also noted this demand which has seen investors looking positively on Nokia too.

Nokia’s Phablet Lumia Tree At Nokia House, Espoo :p

111Check out this awesome Christmas tree that @nokia posted earlier. The decorations you’ll notice looks to be massive cookie Lumias.  Yum! Gingerbread or regular cookies? :D

I love the minimal bezel. Future hints at Phablet Lumias :p

How To Send A Twitter DM Directly From the WP People Hub

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 05:36 AM PST

Windows Phone (7 and 8) are both great in terms of social integration, but one thing that has frustrated me is the lack of Twitter DM integration (I was hoping for something similar to the Facebook Message integration)- but considering how Twitter are restricting their APIs more and more every day that doesn’t seem like something that’s going to happen any-time soon.

However a neat feature that I recently discovered in WP is that you can send out a DM directly from the People hub/What’s new simply by starting your tweet with a “D” then mentioning the recipient

For example: to Send me (Ali) a DM from your phone:

Me Tile–> post An Update –> “D @AliQudsi Hey ali! ”

alternatively if you don’t recall the recipient’s twitter handle simply search for them in the people hub first, then choose “mention on twitter” after which you can replace the “@” with a “D” and you’re all set.

*Note this apparently isn’t a feature of WP but rather a Twitter feature, but I just discovered it and thought it was worth a share.

Video & Gallery: Unboxing Nokia Asha 308, Full Touch Dual Sim S40 Asha

Earlier this week we got our hands on the Nokia Asha 308; courtesy of Nokia Connects. The Nokia Asha 308 is one of Nokia’s new “Full Touch Asha’s” which have done the unthinkable, bringing decent touch screens to feature phones (or low-end smartphones). The Asha 308 comes with a CAPACITIVE (none of that resistive garbage) 3″ screen (1600 x 1200 pixels), a 2Mp camera, Dual Sim Support, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 25 Day standby lifetime (courtesy of a 1100 Ma Battery).

Surprisingly though the Asha 308 has no WiFi which means all your data consumption will have to go through one of the two sim cards, which could be an issue; but then again S40 is great at compressing data and keeping your bill reasonable. The 308 also comes with 40 preloaded Free EA games! and the usual awesome Nokia navigation for “gratis”.

Check out the unboxing video below: (I honestly don’t know what was wrong with me in the video-I swear I wasn’t drunk; but I wasn’t being too serious).

Stay tuned for a second video, this time showing off the Asha 308′s new Full touch UI that takes a load of inspiration from both Meego and Symbian.

Nokia Flagship/Hero device headed for Verizon, says Elop.

SlashGear reports that Stephen Elop teased that there’ll be some “Exciting things with Verizon” indicating that it will be a high end flagship device, “There might be another similar hero exercise with a different operator”. It could mean a variant of the 920 for Verizon or something completely different.

Regarding Nokia’s Here Maps for iOS, Elop says they’ve only just begun.

Michael: CNet have posted the full interview where this as mentioned. Not sure if you want to read it or not, but I found it to be informative

Stephen Elop speaks to CNET and weighs in on the cultural shift at Nokia, why he went with AT&T as an exclusive partner, and what keeps him up at night.

Videos: Lumia App Labs – developer videos for Lumia WP8/WP7

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this series called “Lumia App Labs” by Nokia. There are 5 episodes now:

The first one is just an Intro to the devices, so that devs know what they’re going to be using. It becomes more technical as the episodes progresses.

The second video looks at Windows Phone 8

Windows Phone 8 App development

Developing apps for both WP8/WP7

Video: Nokia Lumia 920 home automated system

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:06 AM PST

I wasn’t sure whether this was just a concept or real until the blurb video claims that everything here works as advertised.

In this video you’ll see a Nokia Lumia 920 connected up to a home and controlling things like TV/lights/fans. Some things would obviously easier to switch on yourself, such as the hairdryer (though it could help in people with arthritis perhaps or other related disabilities), but then there are times when you’re just like “TV, turn on” haha. I know since getting Xbox with Kinect, I’ve really enjoyed the voice commands that reduce controller input.

What’s interesting is that the voice command instructions aren’t simply “turn on/off” the fan, but “I’m hot”.

Looking at nuuneoi‘s other videos, you’ll see he’s quite familiar with Nokia, having worked on Symbian phones like N8 and MeeGo-Harmattan (Maemo) phones like N9 and N950. It’s great to see him continue and work on WP8.

When technology meets imagination. Lumia 920 has been transformed to Voice-Command Home Electronic Appliances Controller via Bluetooth and NFC. This video demonstration show you how this project work. Please note that every single part of this video are not just the concept but it works for real. Check my previous videos about “NeuRoom” if you don’t believe it =)

Integrated/more indepth voice commands for WP8. MS demoed it in the developer preview. Where the heck is it?
