Lumia 820 European Version Update Appears on Navifirm

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 11:38 AM PST

A-gGTb9CAAAJ0C9Earlier today we heard that the first WP8 update for both the Lumia 920 & 820 would begin rolling out later in the day to At&t branded Lumia devices. Later Jay posted that the update has gone live, but Nokia stated that the update wouldn’t be available for the international versions until early February 2013. However it’s possible it might be available a bit sooner, seeing how the firmware for the 820 can now be downloaded and flashed off Navifirm (version number 1232.5951 rather than 1232.2110). So hopefully we won’t have to wait till February, or if worst comes to worst you can always flash it…

Thanks for the tip dkm1101

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 update available in US/Canada. Rest of the world, wait February 2013? :/

Screen Shot 2012-12-19 at 18.07.31As noted by Ali earlier, NokConv confirms that the US and Canada now have updates available for Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 users.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/12/19/us-and-canada-update-your-nokia-lumia-920-lumia-820/

Note battery improvements and imaging improvements as well as many other enhancements.

Today's update brings the following enhancements to the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820:

  • Enhancements in Messaging

  • More efficient and reliable Bluetooth connectivity

  • More efficient and reliable start-up sequence

  • Enhancements in imaging performance and battery management

  • Additional platform updates and enhancements

The next bit I don’t seem to understand. Are the rest of the users supposed to wait until February 2013?

Although this update is initially available for owners on AT&T and Rogers in North America, we haven't forgotten about Lumia owners in other markets. Rest assured, we are working with Microsoft and our operator partners around the globe to ensure the highest quality software updates for our family of Lumia smartphones. Together with Microsoft, we aim at beginning to deliver these updates to other markets in early February 2013

Nokia’s Beijing Factory Can Only Push out 2 Million Lumias Per month, 600,000 of Which Are 920s

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 09:14 AM PST

According to a leak coming from Nokia’s Beijing factory (its largest factory) the maximum production capacity is 2,000,000 Lumia devices per month; of which only 600K are Lumia 920s.

Nokia's biggest factory in Beijing can only produce 2 million Windows Phones per month, consisting of 20,000 Nokia Lumia 920's per day,   25,000 Lumia 820s and 20,000 Lumia 620.

However those numbers really aren’t too bad; assuming that all Lumia 920s produced have been sold (and as far as we’ve seen that looks like the case); and also assuming that no production had started until after the Lumia 920 announcement (Sept. 5th-4 months ago) then accordingly there should have been 2.4 Million Lumia 920s made from the Beijing factory alone.

Besides the Beijing factory Nokia has another 7 global factories, working on the crazy assumption that all these factories can only work at an average of 25% the efficiency of the Beijing factory (which would mean 500K Lumias, 150K of which would be 920s) = 150,000*7= 1,050,000 Lumia 920 devices. Adding up the 2.4 million from the Beijing and the 1.05 from the rest of the world we get 3.45 Million Lumia 920s (and 5.5 Million lumia total-920+820+620); of course that’s all on the bare minimum assumption that production only started after the launch event, and that all the global factories are only working at 25% the efficiency of the Beijing factory. Suddenly that 7 Million number doesn’t sound too far fetched does it?

Lumia 920 Exclusivity on Everything Everywhere Ending Soon, Set To Join Vodaphone Ranks

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 08:06 AM PST

DSC00956Earlier today Vodaphone UK posted a blogpost officially announcing that the Lumia 920 will be coming to them starting next year, and that they have begun stocking the 920. The Lumia 920 upon launch was tied to EE (everything everywhere- which from what I gather has no coverage anywhere); but it would seem that exclusivity deal will end with the year’s ending. Meaning the rest of the players get a jab at this Lumia goodness:

Already confirmed as heading to Vodafone in the new year are the Nokia Lumia 820, the HTC 8X and HTC 8S. They're a stunning set of Windows Phone 8 handsets, but one more can't hurt, can it? With that in mind, we're donning the party hats early in light of the news that we'll also be stocking the Nokia Lumia 920.

Introducing the Lumia 920

Being able to stock the Nokia Lumia 920 is a real boon. It sits right at the top of Nokia's new Windows Phone 8 family with a stunning 4.5-inch ClearBlack display, an 8-Megapixel PureView camera that'll take some of the best shots you've ever seen, and wireless charging built in.

In my opinion this is how exclusivity deals should be everywhere, give one carrier the chance to sell the device as an exclusive for a limited period; then once they’ve capitalized on a device’s initial launch they can begin selling on other carriers to maximize sales.

Video:Demoing Asha S40 Full Touch UI (On Asha 308)

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 07:58 AM PST

DSC00925If you happened to stop by my post earlier this week about the Asha 308 unboxing; I commented that the new “full touch UI” on the higher end S40 devices bears some striking similarities to Meego and Symbian/Nokia Belle. I now take that back; S40 is like a Meego skin on Symbian on a 1Ghz processor, in other words it’s pretty damn awesome (keep in mind that all these devices are sub $100).

Instantly from the new lock screen you see the inspiration that comes from Belle FP2 (or vice versa), where you “swipe” to the side to unlock. After which you’re greeted with 3 screens (sounds familiar?) but instead of the Multitasking screen of the N9 you have a dialer screen dedicated to telephony functions.

WP8 Update Set To Roll Out to At&t Branded Lumia 920s & 820s Starting Today/Tomorrow

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 07:44 AM PST

ATT email portico

Last week we saw the HTC 8X get the first WP8 update “Portico”; it seems that same update will hit At&t Lumias starting Today (the 19th- possibly still tomorrow somewhere in the states?). This update should call blocking, mass SMS delete, WiFi (always on) &  bluetooth connectivity, unexplained freezes as well possibly the camera fix we heard is coming to the 920. The update should be available OTA (Over The Air) meaning there shouldn’t be a need to connect to your PC to download.

So anyone get it? Any visible improvements?

MNB RG: Windows Phone growth continues in Finland according to statcounter (27% daily spike)

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 05:55 AM PST

statcounter

Finland is enjoying their Nokia Lumia devices as evident by the continued growth of Windows Phone according to statcounter. Now whilst this is Finland, Home of Nokia, (and only a small country of 5 million residents) we can’t take for granted what the Finns will buy (as shown by the SkyDiving crash of the other Nokias powered by Symbian starting from 2009 and the steep incline of iOS and Android). It’s good to see Nokia Lumia helping Nokia climb back up – even if it’s on their home turf.

Screen Shot 2012-12-19 at 13.50.37

Janne’s been noticing several spikes in WP, crossing the 20% threshold. I didn’t catch it the first time around but today Janne notes another spike all the way to 27%.  As I’m looking at things, there’s a steady 17+% on their overall scale.

Note that these percentages do not include only recent sales but internet usage of all devices (new and old) and are only extrapolations. Also note that WP includes other manufacturers, not Nokia, but Nokia is taking a significant chunk out of old and new WP sales. Sales wise, it’s still best to wait on Nokia’s real numbers in the new year.

In what is surely just a “day in motion” glitch on StatCounter, the Windows Phone (aka Lumia in the case of Finland) installed base in Finland jumped to 27.39% in daily measurements this afternoon. It had already exceeded 20% on December 14th momentarily and probably in other times as well.

More tellingly, the daily average for December 10th was 19.67%, so reality of Finnish Lumia Internet use is hovering something in the 20% region now. Lumia has been raising steadily since its Finnish February 2012 launch, peaking again after Lumia 900 and Lumia 610 launches in early summer and then again in the last quarter of the year with the introduction of super-cheap Lumia 800 pricing and the Lumia 920 launch in late November.

Lumia 820 won’t launch until January in Finland and there continues to be serious Lumia 920 shortages with major operators or retailers not having anything on the shelves unless you get lucky, mostly just trying to fill pre-orders. Much of the pre-orders have not yet been fulfilled either in some stores. One retailer said the phone is selling better than any Nokia in Finland before and it sure feels like it.

Cheers Janne for the tip

A group of friends in Copenhagen decided to film their live studio session with a Nokia Lumia 920.

Results look great – it helps to know how to control the movement of the panning (even with steadicam) as well as what clips to cut/crop/mesh together.

Rumour: Nokia’s 10″ Windows tablet to resume production for MWC 2013 launch?

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 03:07 AM PST

Digitimes reports that Nokia is to resume production of their tablet, ready for unveiling in MWC 2013, something Michael previously speculated.

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20121218PD211.html

Nokia’s currently firmly focused on smartphones and not letting tablets distract them (despite the growing popularity for them). Though they would enrich the Nokia Lumia portfolio by creating a cohesive family of connected devices.

Digitimes says that originally, Nokia had supposedly planned for a Q1 2012 launch but apparently due to the announcement of Surface and the market for W8 needing to be proven, Nokia delayed development of their tablet and concentrated on phones.

Cheers mamos for the tip!
