Posted: 24 Dec 2012 06:36 AM PST Another week, another rumor; this time coming from a source at the verge. According to the latest word of mouth Nokia’s Windows RT tablet will be coming soon (possible MWC release) sporting a 10.1″ screen, HDMI & USB ports, Cellular connectivity (Via AT&t). The interesting part of the rumored tablet is a “book-like cover” that envelopes the tablet acting as a kickstand and a keyboard while packing an external battery to help juice up the tablet on the go. Yes please! The rumored tablet will supposedly give off 10 hours of usage on a single charge, while supporting quick recharge to boost it to 50% battery in as little time as possible. The part that makes this believable is the claim that the tablet won’t be widely available, but rather as a sort of “testing the waters” device towards Windows 8 RT tablets. What do you guys think? It certainly sounds reasonable, but I’d hate to see people fall in love with a limited production tablet; that once re-introudced would have become outdated.

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 06:26 AM PST The folks at WP7forum.ru had a chance to interview Eugene Gavrilov; the current head designer for Windows Phone who joined the team about 5 years ago when Windows Mobile 6.5 was rebooted into Windows Phone 7. After a couple small talk questions they got straight to the point asking about the design process of the WP start screen, as well as why it took so long to get re-sizable full screen tiles. The honest answer was that What you see in Windows Phone 8 (in terms of home screens) was planned for the original version of WP (7.X) at launch; but it took too long to implement. (Note quotes are translated from Russian so don’t expect them to make too much sense).
Eugene also called Windows Phone 7 “the first test”, once again stating that it takes a while to implement these ideas; and with the introduction of larger screen sizes and resolutions later on it became important to provide full screen re sizable tiles. When asked about the changes to the camera UI in WP8, surprisingly the answer was that it was influenced by Nokia; where they insisted to “focus on the camera” whereas in WP7 which was only supported by Samsung and HTC at first nobody really cared to focus on it. (Is this part of Nokia’s special relationship with Microsoft? Forcing some small but important OS wide changes?)
Regarding Metro design language Eugene stated that he believe it SHOULDN’T be set in stone; meaning depending on the type of app (Children oriented apps/Adult oriented apps)
Regarding the changes to WP8 and what it means in terms of support and updates, Eugene mentioned that users should now expect more frequent over the air update in smaller size, due t being able to simply add files to the system without having to re-write anything. This also means that such updates won’t be available to WP7.X due to the lack of shared core (nothing new here)

Lots of Nokians to Follow in Engadget’s Who to Follow (Twitter) Mobile Edition.. Posted: 24 Dec 2012 01:30 AM PST A while ago, Engadget updated their Who to Follow series with their Mobile Edition (who to follow on Twitter related to Mobile)
I was pleased to see so many Nokia related people there. Mark’s TheNokiaBlog, Marc’s PureViewClub, Steve Litchfield, Ricky Cadden (I still count him as Nokian :p), Rafe Blandford, Joao Luisc, Mark Guim and Stefan (as he was once a major Nokia fan, and even worked at Nokia though he does all mobile stuff now). I’d previously also be including Myriam Joire as her personal blog always included a lot of talk about Nokia, Nseries etc but Myriam is now Engadget staff (though still always fair about Nokia products) and Nseries is no more. The official Nokia account, as well as NokiaUS and Jolla are there too. Props to Engadget for including us in that list (@mynokiablog). I think my twitter list of people I follow (@jaymontano) is also a pretty awesome group of people. Though I do think I’m missing out on a few, so feel free to drop some other names of other Nokians/Nokia related folks to follow

Videos: Electric Guitar covers recorded on Nokia 808 PureView #RichRecording Posted: 24 Dec 2012 01:18 AM PST Check out these videos by Joseph Periappuram. This is just an everyday, bedroom style recording of him playing his guitar recorded on the Nokia 808 PureView. But it doesn’t sound like a plain old, harsh, tinny, scratchy home video recording (especially not from a phone!). Note how close the camera is to the amp and all.
