Santa giving Nokia gifts at Airport #Nokia Lumia 920

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 06:03 PM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-29 at 01.59.35Here’s a fun little video from NokiaHomebase that took place on Christmas Eve . At first, a 920 is put on a carousel at baggage collection waiting for an unsuspecting passenger to pick it up. That person sings jinglebells and wins a Nokia Lumia 920 (perhaps instead of calling, they could have put it on video phone already so they can ‘see’ santa? Anyway Santa comes over to give her a Nokia Lumia 920 and his harem of Mrs Clauses start dishing out some Christmas gifts.

Nokia Lumia 920 Shows Off Its Rich Recording Skills vs. HTC 8x and SGS3

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 01:48 PM PST

The folks at Nokia put together a little comparison, pitting the Lumia 920 vs. the WP HTC 8X and the Samsung Galaxy S3;  then had Billy Duffy from the Cult rock out while they recorded it. The results were pretty obvious as the 920 kills them with its HAAC Rich Recording capable of capturing up to 140 sdecibel (Most devices only reach 110 sdecibel).

Of course we’ve already seen the 920 vs. the 8X where the output from the 8X was honestly ear splitting, unclear and distorted beyond belief (I’m not just saying that, check out the link below for the previous video and decide for yourselves):

Lumia 920 vs. Htc 8X:

Also I Just noticed in the video Jay posted earlier today about the 822; the lady mentioned Rich Recording built-in, which is interesting since I’ve never heard that before; any with an 822 care to weigh in on the audio recording?

Thanks for the tip XKXC

Kid’s Corner Feature in Windows Phone Awarded “Pogie Award” by The New York Times

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 10:42 AM PST

Kid’s Corner, one of the new features that debuted in WP8 (which basically locks off some parts of the phone such as dialer, browser and in app purchases when activated creating a worry free environment for the kids to play Angry birds in) has been awarded a Pogie Award by the New York Times. But what the hell is a Pogie award?

We don't award these coveted trophies to the best products of the year; everybody does that. No, the Pogies celebrate the best ideas of the year: ingenious features that somehow made it past the lawyers, through the penny-pinching committees and into real-world tech gadgets — even if the products overall are turkeys.

So basically the New York Times think Kid’s Corner is an ingenious feature, which isn’t too much of an over statement (although I’m surprised nothing like this existed before), and here’s why:

KID'S CORNER Windows Phone phones may not be flying off the shelves, but it's not because the software isn’t any good. And Kid's Corner is particularly inspired.

The problem: Your offspring in the back seat claims to be bored, begs you to hand over your phone. (Yes, yes, that's right — it's a first-world problem. But still.)

In the Windows Phone 8 software, with a quick left swipe from the Lock screen, you open Kid's Corner, a sanitized version of the operating system that contains only apps, music and videos that you've handpicked in advance. Web browsing, e-mail and phone calls are off limits. So are in-app purchases.

Personally for the most inspired/innovative feature of 2012 I’d be tempted to give it to Apple’s new fusion drives (that give you the speed of an SSD, with the capacity and cheaper price of a normal HDD) IF ONLY it wasn’t introduced by Seagate about 5 years ago (or so).. So until REAL wireless charging without cables come true, I guess I’ll agree with TNYT on this one and hand it over to Kid’s Corner

Nokia Responds to Rumors of Discounting Prices to Help Boost Weak Sales

It has become somewhat of a hobby for some “technology” and news sites to misreport numbers, facts and statistics that involve Nokia to shed them in a bad light; the latest of which was the rumor that the discounted prices of the Lumia 920 ($39.99 on Amazon) and the 820 and other variants selling for free on contract are a desperate attempt of Nokia to boost weak sales (before that was BGR claiming that the report of 600,000 Lumias produced was from all of Nokia’s factories and NOT a single factory in China). This time Doug Dawson from Nokia stepped in and responded to the Wall Street Journal saying:

"pricing is always a carrier decision, but holiday season promotions are fairly standard at this time of year." He noted that Samsung Electronics Co. phones are also being offered for free in some markets.

Basically not everything is a sign of the impending doom…

Lumia 900 Spotted on USA’s Burn Notice

I have my last final exam tomorrow, which means of course that I can only be doing one thing; catching up on my Burn Notice episodes. Iin episode 14 ( a bout 3 episdoes ago) one of Michael’s clients pulls out a Lumia 90 (stormtrooper ftw!) to call for help while having some thugs hammer the door in from behind. However the phone was obviously planted since it got more screen time than needed; but then again Burn Notice has essentially become one large advertisement for Hyundai.

Somebodies proximity sensor is broken… or he’s just faking a call.

Video: Nokia Wireless Charger in floating shelf (with Nokia Lumia 920)

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 04:46 AM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 12.39.26The moment Nokia introduced their wireless charging enabled Nokia Lumias (920/820) I was hoping that we’d see people apply the wireless charing in all sorts of neat ways. I’ve got my own ideas but my pile of things to do never seems to get done anymore due to uni schedule (currently trying to learn 250+ medications :p).

Anyway, I just came across this video of someone using the Nokia Wireless Charger plate in a floating shelf.

Note also that it works with a case on. I’m loving that about the wireless charging. I don’t even need to take it out of the pouch/case etc. The charging sound (and charging disconnection sound) will let you know if the Lumia is charging, quite helpful as sometimes I’ve put my 800 on charge only to realise later the plug was never switched on or worse the MicroUSB connection became loose.

Another neat pro with wireless charging is the Sleep Screen like feature Ali talked about yesterday.

BTW speaking of 800 and wireless charging, remember this video from a while back? We already posted about it but it makes sense to mention it here again. Probably not a task you’d try at home.

CJ takes a quick look at WP7.8 on the Nokia Lumia 900.

This is the actual Nokia release version flashed from a Nokia Care Centre.

On the note of the BT sharing app, according to our readers, once installed, it becomes integrated into the sharing options.

Here’s a video showing Verizon’s advert for the Nokia Lumia 822. Simple but a lot clearer about the product than Nokia’s vague artsy-fartsy nonsense ads.

Statcounter: Nokia Top Mobile Vendor for December 2012

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:26 AM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 07.51.54Interesting bit of data from Statcounter which shows for the December 2012 period, Nokia being the number 1 manufacturer.

I’ve not looked at this section of statcounter before but I think, as usual, it’s to do with having a huge userbase to begin with (rather than sales). As much as Android and Apple has grown, Nokia has had a big head start, which is helping them maintain a lead in this chart.

Looking back at it in line format, you can see the gradual decline (both of Nokia and Apple it seems). Samsung is the only one making significant one directional growth (to be fair, they have been adapting to the market best, seeing what’s popular and going with it).

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 08.21.37

In the last half of the year, the rate of decline seems to be more shallow, steadying off in December.

Cheers Anders for the tip!
