RT @WindowsPhone: Join @BillGates on his Reddit AMA happening right now Posted: 11 Feb 2013 11:33 AM PST @WindowsPhone just tweeted that MS Founder and Philanthropist ($36.8 Billion donated) is doing an AMA on Reddit (Ask Me Anything). Not strictly Nokia related but the WP twitter just tweeted it. Bill’s a pretty interesting guy, down to earth and generally very well liked (not many CEOs are, especially MS related ones). Bill says he uses a Surface Pro as a computer right now. I wonder if he’s using a Nokia Lumia 920 as a phone? Ctrl+F phone doesn’t come up with anything yet.

Nokia Dominating Windows Phone With 78% Marketshare, 54% of WP8 Devices Have Received Portico Posted: 11 Feb 2013 11:32 AM PST Another pretty chart from adduplex brings more good news; most importantly the fact that Nokia’s share of Windows Phone devices (7 and 8) has increased to 78% of the Windows Phone market-share. Interestingly the HTC 8x has had almost no success in gaining market-share, seeing that it’s being dominated by almost every single Lumia; except the 822 and 810 which are carrier specific in the US only. In terms of updates adduplex reports that over 50% of Windows Phone 8 devices have already received portico update (which makes me part of the minority who are still waiting); while only 16& of WP7 devices have received WP7.8. (keep in mind some devices won’t even get it due to carriers, such as the 710 on Tmobile and multiple HTC devices). Via Thanks for the tip |
Low Light Shoot-Out: Lumia 920 vs. BlackBerry Z10 Posted: 11 Feb 2013 10:40 AM PST Earlier today I finally got my hands on my very own BlackBerry Z10; and all joking aside it’s pretty sweet! The BB Hub is everything I wish People’s Hub in WP was; and the gestures are just like Meego with a twist; but more on that in the future. Today is all about the camera, and I went ahead and took the liberty of shooting a couple images (9 PM-ish so it’s pitch black and almost no street lights in front of our building). The first image of each set is the Z10 while the second is the 920 (all in night mode, no flash except the last picture showing the front half of the car).

Video: Spotify demoed on the Nokia Lumia 920 (920 available in Amazon for $69 all colours) Posted: 11 Feb 2013 06:40 AM PST A couple of stories from Mark over at TheNokiaBlog. First up, a demo of Spotify that was recently made available for WP8 on Friday. I’ve been complaining over and over about the lack of this app as I had enjoyed it so much in WP7. I wanted to demo it after having played with it for a bit but I’m totally snowed under with project work after project work. Fortunately, Mark already has a demo to share. Spotify was one of those apps I’d be using on a day to day basis. It’s great to pair up with the Play 360 (now JBL play up), get some offline tracks and head out to the park. Or listen at home with friends. Tip: Stick spotify (for WP8) into Kids Corner so you can hand over your Lumia without fear of being fraped (so easy on an integrated social phone like the lumias to have unauthorised facebook statuses from friends). I need the Purity Pros with this pls
Next up, Mark reports that the Cyan, Yellow, Red, White and Black Nokia Lumia 920 are all available in Amazon for $69. |
Video: Nokia Purity Pros unboxing (black) Posted: 10 Feb 2013 10:00 AM PST Here’s a very different, artistic style of unboxing one of the most highly anticipated accessories of the year (for me anyway), the Nokia Purity Pros. Daaayuuum, look at that gorgeous yellow over ears at the front of the packaging. Sweeet! As outlined yesterday by CNET, it’s a mean bit of kit too.

Nokia Russia’s DIY Nokia Lumia stand from every day objects #LifeProTips Posted: 10 Feb 2013 03:05 AM PST Sometimes, over dinner, I watch some videos on my Nokia Lumia 920. Just yesterday in fact my housemate was shocked to realise the sound was coming from the 920 and not a separate speaker due to its clarity. Anyway, the point is, before I received my flip case (I’ll share some pics at another time) It was hard to watch videos hands free (well I still had to lean it against a glass). Nokia Russia has uploaded this really useful video that shows some household objects can turn into a very simple phone case. I tried the card trick before and that one works really well (it has to be a plastic card, not a card from business cards). That bulldog clip is neat too (a variation on Ali’s quadpod bulldog clip trick).

Joe Belfiore says he’s got to know the competition (uses mac and iPad too) Posted: 09 Feb 2013 06:26 PM PST
For some, you can be a fan and even employee of a company and still use products made by the competition (either by choice or for their learning). For others, it’s unacceptable. Yesterday there was some uproar regarding Joe Belfiore’s tweet from an Android phone. He has said in the past that he uses devices from the competition (as should everyone) to know what they’re up against and what they need to improve. Nokians are known for this too. Joe responded saying:
There definitely is a lot to learn from the competition. It’s sometimes difficult to see different avenues when you’re engrossed in a one direction path. Even if Joe and other MS people are trying other platforms, can they really appreciate what it is that makes the others stand out? What things they could bring to the Windows side? Hopefully they don’t simply look at other products with the conclusion that their implementation and way to go about things is better (though it is nice to occasionally say “yes, we’ve done this right and it’s so much better than how they do it”) What is it that the bloggers are loving? What is it that the consumers are really appreciating? Am I using our own products enough in real life situations to see where it falls short? Am I critical enough of my own products to push the platform forward? Where is the next step for our platform to leap frog the others? What are we missing in our platform that the others have as standard which is loved by techies and the general consumers? HOW and WHEN can we adopt these into our platform? WHAT is our next big thing that will make others want to copy us? WHAT can we do to be the best at this game? These (and many more) are questions I hope MS and Nokia peeps ask themselves daily, when using either Nokia/Windows products or that of the competition.

Weekend video LOL: Nokia 3310 in the Lord of the Rings Posted: 09 Feb 2013 01:52 PM PST
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. Ring, ring, ring….hello? It’s the Nokia 3310 in the Lord of the Rings.

Nokia teases Nokia Lumia 1000 PureView super zooming ahead of #MWC launch?! Posted: 09 Feb 2013 01:13 PM PST Remember last year how Nokia teased us with PureView in the snow? They showed us crystal clear snowy scenes that turned out to be part of a much larger picture. Guess who appears to be teasing again? Nokia Facebook just asked if you can spot the guys ice fishing in front of Nokia HQ. Of course, they could just be talking about the Nokia 808 PureView, but the timing’s just about right to tease this before MWC. After a post that suggested a new Nokia Lumia that’s capable of quite a bit of zooming, one of our readers linked this facebook post by Nokia on Thursday which said:
It’s very difficult to see anything in the picture. Unless of course it was originally huge and something we could zoom/crop into… What do you reckon? Update: Nokia says it was taken by a 920. But the 920′s pictures isn’t known for seeing detail from far away, it’s about low light. Hmm… Why not 808? Why not 1000? :p
Ooh, they’re very quick to correct us
Cheers jmlion for the tip!
