Windows Phone and the near future Posted: 27 Feb 2013 01:54 PM PST Mango, Tango, Apollo, Portico and now even GDR. You would be forgiven if you lost track of all these code names that are circling around the web. Most of you will probably know that the above names are referring to milestone builds of Windows Phone, but what is that new GDR term mean? And what about the much talked about Blue update? Let's start with the rumoured Blue update first. Blue is used by Microsoft to identify several updates across the board ranging from Windows 8 and Windows RT all the way to Windows Phone 8 and there are even sources saying that Blue is referring to updates of services like Bing and outlook.com. What this means is that we shouldn't be talking about Blue for a long while as it will probably still take a while before that will come out, I'd say late fall of this year would be a decent estimate. So, GDR then. The abbreviation stands for General Distribution Release and has been spotted first in a recent HTC leak with the addition of the number 2, making it GDR2. That would suggest there has already been a GDR1 and that is correct according to the always well informed Mary Jo Foley from ZDnet.com. GDR1 was the Portico update, which wasn't that big of an update but it did add some missing features and probably optimized others either visible or invisible. ‘…WP8 users should not fear of being left out as even the Blue update will most likely come to devices…’ What does it all mean to you as a Windows Phone 8 user? Well, the WP development team has gone so silent that it is guesswork, but rumours do indicate that not only will there be a GDR2 release, there will also be a GDR3 release. Both will add new stuff, however, it is unknown right now what will end up where and when. As a veteran Windows Phone user I have been hesitant to believe updates will come since being somewhat left out in the cold with version 7. (Although the 7.8 update is solid and Nokia does provide enough love for 7.8 users) But this time around it should be different and WP8 users should not fear of being left out as even the Blue update will most likely come to devices like the 920. NatWest and RBS Banking apps come to Windows Phone 8 Posted: 27 Feb 2013 01:32 PM PST Hi all, I was browsing the WP8 Marketplace yesterday, and I came across the NatWest banking app, something which I, and I’m sure many of you have been waiting for. Fortunately for me, I use NatWest so this was perfect, and of course because NatWest is part of RBS, they have an app too! But this should hopefully also mean that other banks should jump on the bandwagon if they are not currently in the process if making WP8 apps for their customers. Things like this are always good signs, that big companies know that Windows Phone OS is here to stay! I have some screenshots of the NatWest app which can be seen below. Nokia Indexing the Real world – the next Google, potential to be “a significant disruptor” Posted: 27 Feb 2013 11:45 AM PST   Quick heads up on this article over the The Register. My Dream Nokia #83: Nokia Catwalk Nokia Lumia 1008 WP8 Blue Concept 38mp PureView V1+V2 twisty barrel camera Posted: 27 Feb 2013 11:32 AM PST Next up on the concept list is the Nokia Lumia 1008, the Nokia Catwalk, also by seasoned My Dream Nokia designer, Edgar Mkrtchyan. The evolution from previous designs is present, what with the twisting barrel camera that allows for a large camera whilst allowing the phone to still be very slim. An interesting addition are light notification LEDs. Here is my Catwalk, I appointed in 1008, I’d love to see at MWC, it also incorporates a rotating camera, like my Nokia 809 concept. The volume buttons you can see 2 LEDs, they are light notification. dimensions: 136x74x11, the rest of the features shown on one of the images. have a nice day The specs are quite lovely, very top of the range. Lumia 720 Vs. HTC One Low Light Shootout #MustSee Posted: 27 Feb 2013 05:03 AM PST After yesterdays comparison of the Lumia 920 Vs. the HTC One; I thought it would be cool to see how the Lumia 720 compared against these “UltraPixels”, so I somehow managed (don’t ask how) to sneak one of the prototype Lumia 720′s away from the Nokia booth and ran over to the HTC booth and their darkroom. I dropped a pair of Purity Pro headsets (not mine unfortunately) in the corner along with my MWC badge and tested out the two cameras; so check out the video below- All I can say is regardless of which phone you think did better the Lumia 720 is DAMN impressive for a 250 Euro mid/Low end device, especially when it’s holding it’s own against HTC’s 600 Euro flagship phone.

Crickey! It’s so useful! Although I’m coming up to my third year as a Manchester Medic, it’s only my first year in my base hospital at Preston so I don’t really know this city that well. Nokia Drive/Nokia Maps has been useful at getting me from A-B when either walking/driving but now Nokia Transit can get me about on the public transport here. I just gave it a quick go and it tells me precisely where I am and the journey, and from where I need to go it says where I need to walk to get the bus stop, what bus number I should take, where to get off the bus, and any other buses I need to take. There’s a button to set navigation on and you’re good to go. I feel like I just need one central hub of location stuff though so I have the option of not having to go through separate apps if I just want to get from Here to There. Basically its a song, and people have posted youtube videos doing stupid dances to it. Nokia (well at least the Nokia Music office in Bristol), has joined in on the latest sensation. Nokia Lumia 900 featured in “Olympus Has Fallen” trailer Posted: 26 Feb 2013 10:45 PM PST My dad showed me trailer for a new movie coming out next month, called “Olympus Has Fallen”. It looks really good! Anyway, about two minutes in, my Nokia “fanboy” eye caught a glimpse of a glossy white phone. I paused it and guess what? It was a Nokia Lumia 900 (not the 920 as it has a flat back and no USB port on the bottom). I know people are thinking that its nothing important really, and its not. It is just nice to see Nokia devices finally making it back into films. I remember seeing the N8 in Tron, and had my friends not only go “Mike, that’s your phone”, but decide to purchase it afterwards. Having this brand recognition, especially in the US, is something that Nokia really needs, if it has a chance at being up there with the “innovative” devices of today. Side note: Shame it wasn’t the Yellow 920 Side note 2: I really wish it was Keifer Sutherland ( Jack Bauer) in this movie! At least he uses a Nokia Lumia in Touch Source: Youtube
