Pocketnow’s Nokia Lumia 920 durability report. “It’s a TANK” Posted: 12 Feb 2013 04:09 PM PST Michael (Tony Stark) Fischer has PocketNow’s Durability Report for the Nokia Lumia 920 below. How’s the Nokia Lumia 920 3 months after no case? Looks to be in pretty excellent shape but with some tell-tale scratches (these aren’t visible when the screen is on). These small scratches apparently occurred when crashing to the floor which Michael says would have killed any other device. Despite the glossy finish, it’s hard to see scratches. The metal bit is a lot more durable than the metal bit from the old Lumias (amazingly, mine had no scratches). Despite being beat up, Michael says the 920 has help up much better than other devices he’s owned. The floating lens, despite what folks might have thought, is not so vulnerable to drops. “The Nokia Lumia 920 might be thick and heavy, but there’s a reason for it”. It’s a tank.

Posted: 12 Feb 2013 03:43 PM PST A couple of the latest app news at WPC. First up, I fired up my Nokia Lumia 920 to get my hands on these freebies I’ve had Assassin’s Creed on my N8 and I just didn’t want to buy it all over again to play beyond the trial. But now it’s FREEE. So is Earthworm Jim – a pretty fun game. I think some other games that were once paid Xbox Live apps also turned free some days ago. I forgot which. Secondly, something called “SCRUFF” (not sure what it means in this context) is apparently coming to Windows Phone. I’ve never heard about it before but it apparently already has 4 million members. WPC says there are other apps like this called Growlr (??) and Grindr (males for males/friends?). I think there’s also something called Blendr (general dating/friends?) and Brenda (females for females/friends?). From what I gather, they’re all a bit like Instragram in the social-picture sharing sense I guess, well, no I think they’re actually more about hooking up. Why not. Valentine’s day soon. Unfortunately, none of those are in the store (and only “SCRUFF” on the coming soon list) but apparently there are already alternatives. Cheers Dan for the tip! |

Lumia Windows 8 Tablet Leaked in Pakistan Lumia Launch? Posted: 12 Feb 2013 07:27 AM PST Some of the folks at Nokia gadget were at the Pakistan launch of the Lumia WP8 range, and caught what seems to be a Nokia tablet chilling in plain sit on screen. Although I find it difficult to believe that Nokia would plaster a picture of an unreleased device front and center at a product launch (right besides the Lumia 620); the tablet does carry some Lumia-esque features; such as the vibrant colors and rounded corners (looks more like the 820 and 620 than the 920). The device appears to be a 7 inch tablet by looking at the screen ratio and compared to the size of the 620. Of course this could be random rendered photo to avoid having to put another competitors product on screen; but this close to MWC we’ll take it as a sign. (PS: this reminded me of the HTC Flyer)

ZOMG! Nokia Lumia 620 for £119.99 tomorrow one-day-only-deal with @O2 Posted: 12 Feb 2013 06:37 AM PST
Wow, talk about absolute bargains! O2 are selling the amazing Nokia Lumia 620 for just £119.99! Holy smokes! As it was liked the most, O2 are putting it on a very special offer. These will most likely be locked (sometimes, if they’re from multi-brand retailers, they’re not). My mum wants a new phone but not on this network :/. The normal price of £149.99 will resume after the sale. My housemate will love it. He’s been thinking of getting the 800 for a while but he should defo jump on this deal. |
Video: Well thought out Nokia Purity Pro Review with Audio technician. Posted: 12 Feb 2013 06:01 AM PST This is possible one of the better headphone reviews I’ve seen lately, namely because it has a well thought out approach that includes an audio technician that would be one of the highest authorities for listening to a pair of headphone. It’s nice to see that scale that compares other headphones/earphones and it was neat to have (almost) a little lecture on different aspects of listening pieces. Now Purists instantly balk at anything Monster related, so where will the Purity Pros end up?
Not bad at all considering folks think Monster is bad for sound (well they still might, but they’re not awful, at least not for the general public – they’re targeting the same people who think Beats are nice, and we all know that’s really just for fashion :p). They’re not as good as the best headphones sound wise – they’d call it semi-pro BUT as good as (I can’t hear what they said). Finally though they’re not as good as the one they’ve put on top, they say that unlike the Purity Pros, there’s no BT, NFC, No microphone and they look like s***. Did I mention I really want one? Yellow pleeease

Video: Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8 Security highlights Posted: 12 Feb 2013 05:59 AM PST Nokia @ Work just tweeted the following video called “Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8 Security highlights”; the video is aimed at business people I guess, telling them how WP8 protects them. I enjoyed the mention of “other devices getting malware” (Pst: the Number of malware apps int he Android Play store grows over 580% YOY).

Nokia Russia removes video talking about PureView, Windows Phone and PureView proto Posted: 12 Feb 2013 05:21 AM PST It might mean nothing, but usually when Nokia tries to get videos removed, it’s often because there’s some substance to it. That or they want to get rid of it because it’s misleading (but normally they’d ignore that). This morning we posted about an odd video from Nokia Russia that seemed to speculate what might be coming at MWC. Our readers noted the video isn’t there anymore. The video might simply have been talking about last year’s MWC (talking about WP coming, the new 808 PureView with 41MP and PureView protos) or it could be they’re gearing us up to expect a combined WP PureView 41mp MP Nokia EOS . What do you reckon? BTW, Nokia execs have said last year that in spring, there’ll be a Nokia product people will be climbing over each other to get this. The EOS and Catwalk have already been rumoured. So it’s not like it’s out of the blue or anything. Nokia is focusing their resources on areas they can differentiate, one of which is camera. They have said there’s more PureView to come. Although we saw Lumia PureView in the 920 last September, that was a different breed to the beast in the 808. Whilst PureView V2 is phenomenal in low light, the 808 is no slouch either and destroys all other camera phones in every other department.

Video: #SwitchToLumia – Nokia India and Nokia Lumia 920 – Good Promos Posted: 12 Feb 2013 05:21 AM PST
Here are a couple of very interesting promos from Nokia India. I like them because whilst being ads, they’re also teaching the audience how to use features in the Nokia Lumia 920, whilst showing them in “real life” scenarios which the audience can empathise and connect with. Oh dear gosh, FINALLY, someone at Nokia is beginning to understand this. Good job guys! It’s not the flashiest, and there’s definitely much room for improvement (how to make it memorable for one) it’s a whole lot better than the vague arty-farty stuff.
