Nokia to Rebrand/Release “Here” Maps for Windows Phone at MWC?

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 01:29 PM PST

BDvNjE_CUAEeLMCSomething I noticed in the just leaked image of the Lumia 720, the maps tile on the screen which is clearly the old Nokia maps icon, has been re-branded to “HERE Maps”. It’s quite possible that we might see an app rebranding take place at MWC; especially since Nokia talk about their location services at every event.

*Confession- i was really hoping to see an instagram tile in these press leaks :/

@evaleaks Shows off Lumia 520 and 720 Press Shots

@evaleaks is at it again, this time showing off images of two new Nokia devices, the Lumia 520 (above) and the 720 below. Both these devices have been rumored for a MWC launch but this is the first actual image/render we see of either  and given evaleaks track record I’m inclined to call these the real deal.

The design doesn’t stray far from the fabula design language at all (in face I’m having trouble telling these two devices apart).

More speculation: ‘dsmobile’ indicates Nokia Lumia camera (EOS?) to be better than 808. Catwalk cam better than iPhone 5

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 12:03 PM PST

Nokia_Lumia_Pureview_WP8_2

It appears that dsmobile has been willing to share more information with MNB readers asking him questions about upcoming Nokia devices. Now, as we’ve mentioned before, you can take everything said with pinches of salt. He may very well be wrong but it’s interesting to speculate nonetheless as it’s not that long until these things (whatever they are) are officially announced.

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/02/22/dsmobile-says-nokia-catwalk-is-very-slim-and-good-looking-says-nokias-designing-casing-for-tablet/#comment-772899

It has been long rumoured too that alongside ‘catwalk’ there may be ‘EOS’. Some invisioned they’d be the same device but dsmobile assures us it’s one. This is meant to be the camera centric phone. Furthermore, if a 41mp sensor device is coming, at best, people were hoping it to equal the glorious 808. But it appears somehow that Nokia is to better it.

In response to a reader who thought catwalk was EOS who commented:

Slim and good looking' that means NO xenon flash for the so call catwalk phone..

No phone can be called "flagship camera phone" if no xenon flash !!

I rather Nokia just revise 808 with same camera spec but with bigger screen say 4.5″ and meego on it.

dsmobile replies:

There is camera phone "808″ with wp8 for those who really needs best pictures possible. catwalk is for people who currently are happy with iphone5 quality of photos and do not care about best camera.

It's for people just want good looking device that is well-shaped as thin, small bezel that makes big screen fit all hands.

I am sure there is lot more buyers for that device than camera phone. Still catwalk most likely will kill iphone5 in picture/video+audio quality.

Really shame that so good hardware is waisted for OS that is lagging behind in so many ways. Lumia 920 battery life is a big joke and OS is far from stable.

The camera in the Catwalk is said to “most likely” kill iPhone 5 in picture/video/audio quality.

Quite interestingly, Viipottaja shared this link indicating it may be possible to have slim and xenon.

http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/slim-downed-xenon-flash-means-super-cameraphones-incoming-1133016

Viipottaja says his 920 is very stable and wishes Nokia be more bold and release that rumoured yellow fish/banana lumia pureview.

I only wish they had the balls to release the funky "banana" shaped design for it. :)

Btw, my 920 has been very stable indeed.

dsmobile appears less sure and says he thinks the new camera phone is flat. He comments on rumous about a huge circle that possibly means you might be able to change the optics (what like interchangeable lenses?)

new camera phone most will be flat I think. Not sure Only rumours about huge circle etc. so far. May be it will use optics you can change over it. =)

Another reader asks about the camera module

Very nice! Can you tell us more about the 808 clone ? 100% port of the phase 1 system, or just partial ?

dsmobile replies

better than 808

He later adds he doesn’t expect to see this device any time soon but that’s his own estimates (possibly based on Nokia’s usual lateness) not anything known from Nokia.

But I am sure you wont see that device soon. I think it will be Q4/2013. But this time estimate is just my guess no real info about it.

If that’s the case, would this even be announced at MWC? What if it’s just about Catwalk this time around? We’ve seen at least that the 920 camera can hold off HTC’s overhyped “Ultrapixel”.

Lastly, dsmobile says there’s no plans for tablets. The last post was misinterpreted. Nokia cans tablets (the only thing they would have done was design casings).

Nokia has no plans to make any windows tablets.

Press Release: Nokia Lumia smartphones to be used in select sales operations for The Coca-Cola Company

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 12:01 PM PST

 Nokia Logo

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has announced that Nokia Lumia smartphones will be used by select sales forces of The Coca-Cola Company in Vietnam and Cambodia. The devices will be used on a daily basis by sales associates in those markets for order processing, equipment validation and market execution improvement.

Nokia Lumia smartphones offer Coca-Cola employees full support for Microsoft(TM) Office on the Microsoft(TM) Windows Phone 8 platform, allowing easy synchronization with Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Lync and Office365 as well as seamless integration with Outlook. The features enable employees to work flexibly and remotely with secure access to all their corporate data and systems.

Business level security also comes as standard on Nokia Lumia, with hardware-accelerated encryption, secure boot, sandboxed apps and remote device management capabilities. The high level security means that should an employee misplace their smartphone, confidential company information is still protected.

“Our collaboration with Nokia and Microsoft enables us to utilize our sales automation and market execution tools on two very progressive platforms,” said Javier Polit, Chief Information Officer of the Bottling Investments Group, The Coca-Cola Company. “We will be able to activate our teams with capabilities that enable us to further improve our execution and customer services by obtaining actionable insights. The Nokia Lumia and Microsoft platform fit our enterprise landscape well.”

“By combining the Windows 8 platform with eye-catching design and innovative technologies, we have created smartphones that ensure Coca-Cola employees can operate flexibly across multiple geographies and time zones and still remain fully productive,” said Stephanie Mosticchio, enterprise sales manager for North America at Nokia.  “Providing seamless synchronization with Windows Phone 8 and Microsoft Office, Nokia Lumia smartphones enable Coca-Cola employees to work as effectively on the go as they would in the workplace.”

Nokia for Business
With the Nokia Lumia range, Nokia offers business users the ability to work on their mobile as they would on their PC. With the Windows Phone 8 platform, Microsoft Office and Outlook are built in allowing employees to create and edit PowerPoint, Excel and Word documents wherever they are whilst seamlessly syncing their files. Combined with a design that stands out, business level security as standard, and a range of Qi standard wireless charging solutions, the Nokia Lumia is the most innovative smartphone for businesses on the market today.

Cheers Muerte for the tip!

Video Comparison: Lumia 620 Vs 920; Boot Time and App launching Speed

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 10:13 AM PST

620 vs 920I’ve been playing with the Lumia 620 for a couple days now, and it’s a very impressive device, but most importantly how does it shape up in terms of general performance? For me the greatest feature in WP8 is the overall speed and flow of the UI; where it rarely lags and is generally quite reliable. So how does the 620 shape up in terms of this? Well thankfully it bares no resemblance to its predecessor (the 610) in terms of performance  where-as the 610 had trouble running a lot of apps and was described as “clunky” by many the 620 is pretty much perfect.

*Note: Nokia Drive wouldn’t run on the 620 since the battery had died mid-installation; which sort of made it a corrupt install; a quick uninstall/reboot fixed the issue, so nothing to worry about.

‘dsmobile’ says Nokia “Catwalk” is very slim and good looking. Says Nokia’s designing casing for tablet?

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 06:48 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-02-22 at 14.41.50

We didn’t expect to hear any more hints from dsmobile after last year, but he’s been commenting today on the MWC speculation post. Now take what is said with a pinch of salt, but do note that dsmobile was pretty accurate last year on various subjects, including the 808 which was not yet announced at the time.

dsmobile discusses two points:

1) Nokia Catwalk is said to be very slim and good looking device. dsmobile in the past seemed quite particular with Nokia designs, having high standards for design so this is good that he thinks it’s very slim and good looking. He’s not a fan of WP though.

catwalk is very slim and good looking device but as long as there is wp inside no more Nokia phones for me. :(

It was already known that Catwalk may have been slim/aluminium so perhaps nothing new here unless you count on it being “very” slim and “good looking” (we can have slim and ugly, eh, Sammy/Moto?)

2) Regarding a tablet, he says Nokia’s designing the casing, but someone else is making the tablet. This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s coming at MWC.

We’re Going to Barcelona (Again); Covering MWC Live in All Its Glory!

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 03:42 AM PST

This accurately describes my excitement as 10 AM Sunday Morning ticks closer

Exciting days are soon to be upon us, and to add the excitement MyNokiaBlog will be on the floor of MWC in Barcelona to cover all the latest news, gossip and general awesomeness that is Mobile World Congress!

For the second year straight we’ll be in the lion’s den to get you (our beloved readers) a closeup experience of whatever it is Nokia (and others) have in stock for us.

Flight schedule is currently to fly in on Sunday (the 24th- a day before) and leave on the 27th (MWC officially ends on the 28th); so we have 4 days of Nokia related awesomeness ahead of us, and we honestly couldn’t be anymore excited.

To keep us even more tense amazingly we still haven’t seen a single leak or render of what’s coming! Last year we had rumors and specs about the 808 and we all knew the global 900 was coming, but we’re yet to hear something solid this year besides device numbers. As one of our readers mentioned in Jay’s “What are You expecting at MWC post“:

v.s.i says:
One thing is clear: the level of secrecy of new Nokia products is leaps and bounds over the pre-Elop era. Incredible as it may sound, it's even ahead of Apple's. Say what you will, but this does point to and account for something. :)

We’ll try to get you loyal Nokia fans the best coverage possible, be it device related or just trying to send out a feel of the general atmosphere; and expect LOADS of videos (seriously).

Be sure to follow our official twitter account @MyNokiaBlog, as well as JayMichael and Myself. I’ll try to post as much as possible through the official MNB twitter account; but that’s sometimes difficult through the phone; so follow us all for our impressions and thoughts!

You can also subscribe to my Youtube channel which should hopefully overflow with new videos (provided the internet there is good).
*Note: I’ll also try to get loads of comparison videos against whatever new devices are announced by other companies, or maybe just regular hands on with some new Non-Nokia devices; so if there’s something in particular you guys want to see let us know down below).

And most importantly we’d love to meet any of our readers and fellow Nokia fans, so if you happen to be in the area give us a shout out!

(Now to the most difficult choice of all, which devices to take to Spain…)

*Excited

What are you expecting from Nokia’s new devices at MWC? EOS/Catwalk/PureView? :)

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 02:43 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-02-22 at 10.41.58

We are now counting down the hours until Nokia announces their new portfolio of devices. The much awaited line of new Lumias have been highly anticipated, with Nokia Exec Richard Kerris last year indicating that in Spring we might get a new Nokia that people will climb over each other to get.

There’s been plenty of rumours of codename Catwalk and the camera successor, EOS. Whilst other manufacturers are trying desperately to defeat Nokia’s cameraphones, their current line of handsets is still more than plenty enough to hold them off. Of course they do since Nokia’s camera phone is about performance first rather than marketing (because, sorry Nokia, you suck at that).

There’s definitely a lot of excitement from the Nokia camp. They’re pretty well prepped on not revealing anything other than it’s gonna be an exciting year for Nokia. We hope so.

What features are you looking for from Nokia’s devices?

What features are you hoping MS have taken the effort to put in Windows Phone this time around?

Where is the next step for PureView?

Early Samples from NeoWin show Nokia Lumia Photos looking better than HTC One. PureView FTW!

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 02:24 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-02-22 at 10.13.00

After all that hyping, what it comes down to is actual performance, no? Nokia has not only one but two PureView beasts, with the latter in the 808 often being considered the big daddy of all camera phones, it’s also great to see the 920 flying the flag proudly for Nokia too.

In Neowin’s samples are accompanied by the following comment. The picture above is from the last comment.

  • The Lumia 920 here appears to display more contrast than the HTC One, although the One does display relatively acceptable dynamic range
  • Again it looks like the Lumia 920 (top) has taken the better photo, as it has more vibrant colors with less grain.
  • This is a true low-light test of the Lumia 920 vs HTC One, with the shots being taken in a dark environment around 9 PM. The Lumia 920 is not only sharper in the image it produces, but it’s also brighter and clearer.

These aren’t rigorous camera sample tests yet, but it bodes well that if the 920 can do this now, then HTC, Please do fear what is coming at MWC from Nokia. Your Notion that more megapixel is a myth is simply misdirection away from what Nokia has achieved in oversampling PV1.

PureView is about pushing and tackling the boundaries in mobile imaging. Scoff some might at PureView but it performs and that’s what matters. When Nokia talks imaging, they’re not about the fluff. They’re about the performance. When Nokia talks about OIS, they talk about the whole floating lens which time and time bests competitors in low light. When Nokia talks about Megapixels not being the important thing, they brought us 41 MILLION and said that’s not even what matters here. On paper Nokia intrigues but on results is where Nokia wows because they deliver.

Now, let’s have the next PureView handset in an even more beautiful new Nokia Lumia handset eh?
