Nokia Pulse Discontinued For Symbian and N9; Desktop Client to be Discontinued as Well

Posted: 01 Feb 2013 04:49 AM PST

wp_ss_20130201_0002Nokia Pulse is my all time favorite beta app that ever came through the Beta apps site. Unfortunately support for Symbian as well as Meego has been discontinued; meaning there will be no future updates or compatibility fixes. Users who have already downloaded the app will continue to use it, but the new layout (which uses single posts, rather than stories with comments) will not be available to users.

The desktop client will no longer be accessible via browser after March 5th, you can still use the web client on your mobile browser (provided its HTML5 capable).

With Windows Phone as our primary smartphone platform, naturally we are also focusing our primary development efforts for Nokia Pulse on it. That's also the reason why we haven't updated the Nokia Pulse clients for both Symbian and the N9 recently. Moving forward, we will now officially conclude the Nokia Pulse beta trial for Symbian and the N9 and will no longer offer the download option of Pulse for these platforms on Betalabs.

We truly appreciate the role the Symbian/N9 trial members have played in providing feedback on Nokia Pulse on these platforms, enabling us to learn from it and improve the application.

While we will conclude the public beta trial for Nokia Pulse on Symbian/N9, users that have already downloaded the beta for Symbian and N9 can still continue using the service. Please note, however, that these versions may be affected by upcoming backend changes that can impact the app performance and functionality.

As Nokia Pulse beta further evolves as a mobile messaging experience, we have also decided to discontinue the desktop web support for Pulse on March 5th, 2013.  After that date, you will no longer be able to access your Pulse conversations from the desktop web. Nokia Pulse will continue to be available on Nokia Lumia phones and all other Windows Phones via the Windows Phone Store. It will also be available on other smartphones such as iPhone and Android devices via your HTML5 enabled mobile browser at http://pulse.nokia.com.

We are very grateful for your feedback, suggestions and insights. Thank you for using and contributing to Nokia Pulse.

Video: BlackBerry Z10 and Nokia N9 MeeGo Swipe UI similarities with BB10

When we first some glimpses of the new BB10 OS, we saw it had a lot of similarities to Nokia’s revolutionary Swipe UI in the MeeGo-Harmattan OS. BB10 seems to be a collection of different OSes into one, and the Swipe UI homage might find some new fans for the z10.

Previously from Nokia Experts, concentrating on ZDNet, Matthew Miller notes the following similarities.

  • Tap/swipe the screen with no button press to turn on and unlock device
  • Swipe up from bottom to return to “home”
  • Display of applications and folders, one with multitasking tiles that are live, and one with recent comms (BlackBerry Hub)
  • Swipe down to reveal upper menu
  • Slowly move finger across the screen to see elements behind active one
  • Deep multi-service integration.

I think their clock is similar too no (at least it was at the time).

Thanks NSX for the tip!

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 09.34.42We received this email the other day about a new Nokia twitter account, @NokiaatWork

Hi Jay,

We are getting in touch with a selection of people in the Nokia community to tell you about a new Twitter channel launched recently: @NokiaAtWork.

The channel is all about how to get the most from using Lumia in your work life.

We are keen to know how you guys use Lumia to be more productive – whether you're a student or the CEO or a major corporation, we want to share your tips & tricks on getting the most from your phones: from how you manage your calendars, contacts, email – right up to how you use Office, Skydrive and anything else that makes your work life more productive.

Come say hello to the Nokia@Work team!

Thanks, and if you have any questions please do ask away!

Regards,

Joe

How does your 920 fit in your “work”? My homescreen has a few of my different email account set up. A main one, a side one for e-receipts, and the university one. The calendar as standard has been syncing with Uni events, so I know where I’m supposed to be. I’ve got a to do list called “clearer” on the same screen that shows me how many tasks I’ve got left to do (and optionally it can show on the tile what those tasks are). Nokia Drive is a must whenever I’m being sent on placement to new and different locations I’ve never been to. In terms of blog work, Rooms and integrated messenger have been pretty useful. Integrated chat has surprised me in its usefulness. Never really used it before on 800/900 but I like how it just sends me facebook messages as if they were texts (which I can reply to in the same fashion or by text if they’re offline). I do love SkyDrive. Skydrive on PC, Mac, iPod, Lumia. Whereever I am, I have the SkyDrive files with me. I also love the automatic upload to SkyDrive feature as I don’t have to think about backing up my pictures and videos. (It’s funny that it sometimes uploads so quickly, you might delete a picture after taking it but it’s already online). I often have to make copies of written notes, or get pages from textbooks by taking a picture of them so it’s nice that they just end up on my computer without me having to manually put it on my computer.

Why is my @Nokia Lumia 920 turning itself off? Even after the Portico update? Beta Test is NOT over.

If there was one thing I could say about my Nokia Lumia 800 and then the 900 I used after it was that they were super reliable. No freezing, no random reboots, no switching themselves off.  Within a few days of my first Nokia Lumia 920, I found out the LED stopped working. That’s fine, the rest of the phone was OK, and I got a replacement as it was within the 30 days. That was a hardware issue.

I’ve no idea if I’ve ended up swapping it for another dud 920 or it’s just part of the quality of WP8 (I guess it should be more widespread if that’s the case) but my Nokia Lumia 920 randomly turns itself off. Before, it did this once or twice a month. Then every other week. Then a couple of times a week. I thought that this infamous Portico update would sort it so I waited around for that. No. It happened not long after the update and just this morning when it was meant to be an alarm. I was kinda wishing I didn’t set an alarm as I wanted extra sleep (I didn’t have to come in till late anyway – call it a new Lumia extra rest feature that intuitively knows if you’ve slept late and need more sleep :/). Imagine if I had set it as my only alarm for an exam, morning lecture or whatever situation I might have actually needed it in.

I’ve looked around and I’ve noticed this happening with a some users on this thread. They’ve had the update since December.

I am now an expert of soft reseting (volume down and power) which resets my date to September 5th, 2012, 09:47.

Here’s a  different thread, I guess before the update with users experiencing the same problem.

I was wondering if this was a WP8 thing. But I searched for users of HTC 8X experiencing the same thing. Unless it’s my google-fu gone bad, I can’t seem to find a thread about it.

BTW, here’s yet another 920 thread, from Nokia discussions.

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 09.24.22 Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 09.26.30

Is this something Nokia is aware of? Is this a specific Nokia firmware problem? Or a hardware issue? Am I going to have to send in my 920 for servicing (I’d rather not have to send a phone away and use an old one, lose all whatsapp messages etc)?

The 900 and my 800 have gone months without being turned off (and when they did turn off, it was a no-phone-zone me turning them off). I did find out the reason why my 800 would not turn on after the battery depleted was the Samsung charger I used on it didn’t supply the same power – as my other Nokia chargers could ‘wake it up’.

I’d love to blame MS and whine about how they’re taking so long to implement few features (hey to being late with notification centre!) – I thought it would be to at least make the phone stable (and it is when using the rest of the phone) but looking at it, it’s sadly seeming to have a lot more Nokia involvement to it…actually, no wait. whilst I was updating this post with screenshots I found one. Just one so far.

I’d like to know what’s causing it to turn off. I’d like to know what can be done about it.

Update: Peter’s comment below suggests it could be hardware.

http://forums.wpcentral.com/nokia-lumia-920/214477-nokia-just-replaced-my-920-no-more-crashes.html

Update 2: As for ‘Doug’ recommending “other” more reliable phones, for every one thread about the 920 shut down, there is about 20 of the “recommended” handset. Perhaps as it has more users, but still goes to show it plagues them too. See comment

Update 3: I forgot about this twitter service – @NokiaHelps.  Various companies have specific twitter accounts to help their customers. I’ve found a lot of them more useful than having to call customer care lines. Let’s see how this works.

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 10.41.23

Update 4: Got an email from Nokia Care ( Customer Support & Team Coordinator
Customer Escalations and Resolutions Team) who wants to give me a call. Phone on standby. Let’s hope it doesn’t turn off so I don’t miss the call, eh :p.

Update 5: Well, that was quick. Nokia helps, certainly did help. I got a call as soon as they received my email (they were having problems with their email system so things were coming in slowly). They’re sorting it out through something called Door Step Swap. I don’t have to come in to a shop, I don’t have to call the shop and wait for them to get stock, I don’t have to send my phone away. They do next day (it’s Friday so it’ll be Monday, or Monday dispatch with Tuesday delivery) service. Just swap the phone on the doorstep. How cool is that. :D Thanks!

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 11.53.12Fingers crossed I am third time lucky.
