Nokia Lumia 1020: Quick Hands On!

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 06:46 PM PDT

2013-07-22-3225

Hello MNB Readers!!!!

The day has finally come to where I could get my hands on a Lumia 1020!!! First thing first….I do NOT own the device YET….the kind people at AT&T let me spend about an hour with the phone.

Here are a few things I noticed:

  • The 1020 is SLIM and lightweight!!! Even more so than videos and pictures make it out to be. I was surprised.

2013-07-22-3221

  • When taking a picture, it says “Saving” in the top left corner. It honestly doesn’t take much longer than saving a 38MP photo on the 808 and that is AMAZING considering that it is saving 2 photos at once!
  • Nokia Pro Camera is without a doubt the best camera interface that I have ever used. It did take a moment to find the Manual Focus as it appeared to not be clearly labeled but rather had an icon that I was unfamiliar with.
  • I could NOT find a way to quickly get photos off of the 1020 so that I can share them here. IE web defaults to mobile sites and I had issues trying to upload them to Hotmail and Gmail via the web.
  • I could not use NFC to tap and share to my 808..figures…BUT I was able to Bluetooth a few sample photos….in
  • 5MP resolution….I couldn’t get the 38MP photos off the phone. I know I know, it has been stated that you can only get them off via a computer…. I honestly found this to be a ridiculous limitation and a hassle in the future. I would like to manage my photos as I wish from my phone. I only had the option to Share via Messaging, ATT Locker, Bluetooth, Tap & Send(share?) and some other option but ALL of these except Locker would share the 5MP photo.

About the 1020 Photos:

  • There is SOMETHING going on that causes visible noise in the photos. Is it a deal breaker? NO. Am I buying a 1020? Yes. Fact is, the 1020 is more versatile than the 808 when it comes to photos and in the right environments and the right settings, the 1020 will enable photos that the 808 cannot produce (manual focus, better low light, better image stabilization). With that said, if you point and shoot in automatic at the same scene….from my LIMITED testing….the 808 produces photos with less “grain”. I swear it looks like I can see every pixel in the 1020 photos…
  • The Auto Focus blows the 808 out of the water! I was able to focus faster and closer (without going into Macro Mode) on the 1020 than the 808 could ever dream of.
  • Colors seem a little off on the 1020, punchy, like Mr. Dining stated but NOT overly saturated.  This may change depending on the lighting and settings. Something was throwing off the White Balance on the 1020. All settings were on Auto for both devices.

  • Taking photos on the 1020 is so much more pleasurable than on the 808. Did I mention Pro Camera…oh that piece of software…amazing. It draws you in with all of the creative options.
  • I still noticed the same “graininess” in the 5MP oversampled photos. Honestly…it is kind of boggling…. BUT I checked some N82 photos and some N8 photos and the same TYPE of grain is present. I don’t remember my N8 photos looking so grainy. Seriously, there is the same type of pixel grain present. My only conclusion is that the Nokia 808 is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO far ahead somehow in producing pure, low noise when over-sampling is applied that we have been spoiled. Now, the 808 ISN”T noisless, especially in full resolution but my gosh, the 808 produces pure images…smooth…very smooth details.

Look at the 1020 photo of the 808, there is noise around the camera lens. Check out the original photo here

Now, look at the 808 photo of the 1020 around the lens area. Original photo here.

Here is another photo from the 808 of the 1020. This is a 5MP photo fully zoomed in so there isn’t any Oversampling and you can now see some graininess/noise. Original here.

It honestly seems like the Oversampling on the 1020 is OFF (NOT that it is possible to do so). The 1020 photos appear to have similar noise to 808 photos that do not have any oversampling. I can’t explain it. Just take a look at the few 1020 photos on my flickr page. I could ONLY Bluetooth the 5MP photos so even if the 808 equivalent was 38MP, just compare them anyway as the 5MP oversampled photo on the 1020 SHOULD look better than the 38MP photo on the 1020. Now remember, these are photos in none ideal conditions and this is not an official camera comparison BUT simply initial impressions with a LIMITED hands on.

That is all for now. I am EXTREMELY excited about getting a 1020 and taking it through the proper tests, learning how to use all of the settings and capturing new memories for years to come. There is versatility in the 1020′s camera setup that the 808 cannot match and a clarity and zoom factor in the 808 that currently the 1020 cannot match. With that said, I will be keeping my 808 after buying the 1020 and I look forward to many more comparisons. Please keep in mind that the 1020′s competition ISN’T the 808, it is the iPhones, Androids and Blackberries that occupy the same shelf space and battle for consumer dollars. Yes, the 808 is the benchmark that ALL camera phones will be judged by but I will tell you this, more jaws dropped when I pulled out my 808, not because of the stellar photos, but just because everyone in the store DID NOT KNOW that the 1020 was NOT the worlds first 41MP smartphone. The competition lies in the known and not the unknown and unsellable and with that, there isn’t a better smartphone camera to be had when you walk into a carrier at in the next few days and months. FINALLY DO NOT USE MY COMPARISON TO NEGATIVELY JUDGE THE 1020! Please wait for more professionally done photo comparisons.

As always, thank you for choosing MyNokiaBlog,

Deaconclgi

P.S. Good news, another AT&T store called me to let me know that they got their 1020 in and that if I can work out a schedule, I can “spend as much time with it as I want to” in the store. More photos and possibly some video to come over the next few days! Feel free to check out my Flickr page to download and analyze the photos as you would like. I apologize in advance for the unscientific comparison or any incorrect terms used in this article.

Report: Nokia Decided on the “Lumia” Family Name in Only One Day

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 02:40 PM PDT

DSC02212According to an article by Reuters, the “Lumia” name for Nokia’s family of Windows Phone handsets that we’re all familiar with was picked in under a day. That might not sound like a big deal, but when you think of what the Lumia family means to Nokia (and more importantly what it meant regarding Nokia’s future two years ago) you’d think it would have been weeks in the deliberation. Instead Elop decided not to waste time and had them make the decision within the day:

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recalls a meeting in August 2011 in which the company’s leadership struggled to decide on the name of its new smartphone, the first using Windows Phone software.

“We almost fell into the trap that had often befallen Nokia, which was… let them work on it a bit longer because we couldn’t quite reach agreement,” Elop said. Instead, he demanded a decision that day.

“Why wait till tomorrow or next week? We could make the decision today. And we did.” Lumia was the result.

I recall when I first heard the name I went the first week or so thinking it was actually called “Lumina” (like the car) and thought that was an odd choice, but I’ve grown to like the name; it seems to have more character than “Galaxy”. Something Samsung might have noticed, by their decision to use a less common word “ATVI” for their Windows Phone line up.

There’s also a bit more about Elop speaking up against Nokia’s arrogance and stubbornness that lead to their downfall:

The problem, Elop says, was a stubbornness that came from years of being at the top. He says he has encouraged employees to adopt a “challenger mindset”.

“What I really mean is, don’t be arrogant,” he said. “There’s a number of examples over the last six, seven years, where Nokia heard trends but decided to ignore those trends because it felt that it somehow knew better… And that hurt the company badly for many years.”

Alf Noto, head of Nokia’s customer care division, said that approach was reflected in the way it now deals with customers. Elop answers around 10-20 customer emails each day, he said.

Others say Nokia has also become more humble towards its partners, including carriers and retailers who sell handsets, as well as developers who create the apps for phones.

“He took a lot of the arrogance out. For a while we were behaving like a market leader and we weren’t,” said Christof Hellmis, an executive at Nokia’s Here navigation business.

Once again seeing how the Lumia name was decided within a day, I don’t think it’s that unbelievable that the 1020/909/1000 had multiple “official” names along the way.

Leakyleak: Lumia 625 Revealed: 4.7″ WVGA resolution, 2000 mAh battery, 5 Mp camera (Updated With More Images)

It seems Nokia’s big unveiling set for tomorrow isn’t the Lumia Amber update (unfortunately), but instead the Lumia 625 Nokia’s first phablet-like device with exchangeable backs/shells (in 5 colors) . With a  4.7″ LCD screen at 480p (similar to the WP7 HTC Titan II); according to the spec sheet above the phone packs a 2,000 mAh battery, 512 Mb ram and a 5Mp camera capable of filming at 1080p and a 480p FFC. The phone appears to be running the Lumia Amber update (notice the Nokia smart cam app) so perhaps we’ll hear some news about when our own devices will get a taste of that Amber goodness?

Future Lumias: Bigger and smaller screens, thinner bezels says Nokia’s head of design

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 10:47 AM PDT

Nokia Phablet larger

Nokia doesn’t like to talk about unreleased products (unless they’re doing teasers), but Vodafone have managed to get Nokia’s head of design to spill a bean or two.

We called for bigger screens. We got some bigger screens in the 920 and co, but we obviously want more. Last year, I spoke to some design people about this need for larger screens (back in Finland in June 2012) and they were quite adamant on not simply ‘following’ the likes of Samsung. Well, there’s definitely a market for phablets, what with 35M last year being sold (?) with some predicting about 40-60M to be sold this year.

http://blog.vodafone.co.uk/2013/07/22/the-future-of-lumia-nokias-head-of-design-spills-the-beans/

Apparently, Nokia now sees why people would want bigger screens and want to offer consumers that choice. Yay.

  • They note that with imaging being important at Nokia, the camera does define a certain required footprint.
  • “Personally? I like a product like the 925 which is big, but that I can still use with one hand. But I can totally see why people might like bigger displays. At Nokia we like to give people some choice as to how they want to use the product”  - Nokia’s head of product design, Stefan Pannenbecker.
  • You need to understand how people use their phones, and when you know that, you can figure out how people will use their phones in the future, too.
  • We will see bigger screens with less bezel! Hurrah! “We try to minimise the footprint of the product by optimising the way we build the screen and the frame around it”. How about some on screen WP buttons eh? They eat so much space, and 99% of people ( I made that up) hate the search button.

We already know to expect the launch of the largest screen Nokia to date, at 4.7″, the same as the HTC One. Much larger than the 4.5″ screen of the 920 (which is huge btw, I picked up my N8 last week and woah, the 925/920 screen is so big in comparison :p). Interestingly, that device enters at the entry level range, as the Nokia Lumia 625. An interesting move from Nokia to continue pushing high end experiences to affordable prices (hence how the likes of the 620 got high praises all around, some saying it’s what every entry level smartphone should be, and why the 520 is selling so much.

Rumours are that future lumias will come in the 5″+ and even 6″ range. Please do. :)

Nokia Lumia 520 at AT&T for $99

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 10:34 AM PDT

700-nokia-lumia-520-yellow_cyan_white_redBack at the end of June, we saw a leak of AT&T’s Nokia Lumia 520, the most affordable and popular Windows Phone 8 handset to date.

AT&T now has the Nokia Lumia 520 at $99 without contract or subsidy. T-Mobile are said to be pleased with the sales of the 521 (a variant of the 520) and even have another 521 heading to MetroPCS which T-Mobile also owns. Reports say HSN have sold in excess of 18,000 in 24 hours (possibly more). It should be of no surprise then how the Nokia Lumia 520 has shot to the top as the best selling WP according to Adduplex.

Ina Fried at AllThingsD notes Nokia is also targeting the high end, with the likes of 925 on T-Mobile and the 1020 on AT&T (plus  928 on Verizon). Ina says that according to AT&T, preorders of the 1020 have already sold out.

Nokia Lumia 1020 vs iPhone 5 vs Nokia Lumia 920 low light flash, Xenon vs LED (Spoiler: 1020 demolishes iPhone)

There’s a bunch of sample photos (and possibly videos) from the Nokia Lumia 1020 available on Flickr. The first regular joe set we were asked to take down by AT&T peeps, but more seems to have appeared prior to the official shipping date.

Anyway, the pics we’re looking at here are the ones comparing the 1020 against the iPhone and 920. Here is a test for Xenon vs LED, but really we want examples of freezing movement too which cannot be done with the LED flash and the longer exposure time.

Like the 928, the 1020 features OIS and Xenon. But the 1020 also has a huge sensor and oversampling.

There’s a video here but I can’t tell if it’s from the 1020 as the audio doesn’t seem to be clearly in stereo. They also have a 920 so they could be testing that.

Just to show how dark this room was, you know how epic the 920 is at low light without flash…

13 minute Nokia Lumia 1020 hands on, filmed on Nokia Lumia 925

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 03:37 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 11.18.04

Here’s a 13 minute hands on demo of the Nokia Lumia 1020, filmed in 1080p by the Nokia Lumia 925.

Firstly, onto the 925 bit – it performed so well here. I was thinking we wouldn’t hear any of te audio because of all the hubbub around me but it sounds great. The AF is quick and accurate pretty much all of the time which is necessary when filming gadgets that are in such shallow depth of field (due to being closer, that area that’s in focus is very small). BTW, if the video doesn’t show options for 1080p then it’s either YouTube still processing or they’ve messed something up as usual (the original file was 2GB).

Onto the demo. We have Pablo Tapia from Nokia Global Marketing. You may remember him previously when we filmed the Nokia Asha 306 in Finland. Kudos to Pablo on being able to speak for so long about the product.

Rumor: Next Lumia 6XX to Carry a 720p Screen; Announced Later This year

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 03:12 AM PDT

DSC01909

We’ve recently heard some news about a 4.7″/Phablet-like Lumia 625 on the way, on the other hand we have received some information that makes mention of a 6 series Lumia (no word on the model name) with a 720p screen and a screen “4 inches or larger”. Adding an HD screen to a budget device would be a killer move by Nokia as it would destroy the Galaxy Grand (which is essentially a note sized device with a crappy screen). It’s not yet clear whether this is the same device as the 625 or something completely different (for all we know the device’s name could change last minute like the 1020). But we think it’s safe to bet on a HD screened budget device coming your way this september  (Nokia World?).

What do you guys think? Does the market have a gap waiting to be filled by a proper specced budget phablet?
