O2 Germany Said to be Leaving BlackBerry in favor of Windows Phone

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 02:52 PM PDT

DSC01862The gap between BB and WP keeps getting bigger and bigger (although WP could learn a couple tricks from BB’s Hub), the latest blow to BlackBerry comes at the hands of a leaked report detailing O2 Germany’s plans to ditch their Blackberries in favor of Windows Phone devices. The switch is due to O2 preferring WP’s enterprise services by Microsoft and to save a chunk of money off BB’s enterprise fees; of course lets not forget that O2 is owned by Telefonica, which are supposed to be unveiling their own 64Gb variant of the 1020 soon, so there’s always that.

GDR2 Reportedly Fixes all “Other” Storage Issues

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 02:38 PM PDT

WP_20130728_006

According to Joe Belfiore, the GDR2 update (which is packed into the Lumia Amber update on Nokias) should completely resolve the “other” storage issue. Where mysterious files would slowly eat away at your phone’s capacity till it emptied it.

Belfiore confirmed that the 1020 he has running GDR2 was resolved of all Other storage woes, which were being caused by improperly deleted XAP files, so hopefully the answer to many of your prayers is near.

Michael: Seeing as GDR2 is in “Amber”, figured the Lumia 925 would have this “fix” too right? Well, sadly, the Lumia 925 shows that I have 6.02GB of “Other” storage. Either thats the standard amount, or something isn’t right here. (Or simply that the 1020 is on a newer version than the 925 I have been using.)

More DIY Matte Phones, This Time the Lumia 820

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 10:24 AM PDT

543742_634743619876802_1482390880_nAnother one of our Facebook readers sent in this picture above of his Lumia 820′s shell after it went head on against a piece of sandpaper; and as always the results look fabulous. True there are some variants of the Lumia 820′s shell that come in matte (the wireless charging shells I believe). But if you’re bored of your glossy look it’s one more thing to consider (and this is making a really good case for the yellow 1020).

Thanks for sending this in Matvei

MyDreamNokia: Lumia 950 Mini

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 10:17 AM PDT

1014149_295476633930473_2011562301_nOne of our readers shared their DreamNokia on our FB page, the Lumia 950 mini carries a 4.1″ screen (which is what passes for Mini nowadays) with a 720p screen. It seems to carry the same 8.7 Mp camera of the Lumia 920 but does away with the wireless charging in favor of a super light weight of 120 grams and an aluminum/polycarbonate body similar to the Lumia 925.

What do you guys think? is 4.1″ still to big for a “mini” phone?

Sorry I haven’t been able to update on the go, but as the title suggests I’m at Helsinki Airport as I’m now on the journey back to UK after a fantastic and surreal re-visit of Finland. Kudos Nokia and Nokia Connects :) . More on that on Monday.

Pretty speedy considering. I wish I had this speed at the hotel :p Not that there was much time spent there.

I was going to just tweet this picture but I thought it was nice to share on the blog that whilst waiting around,  I’ve got free WiFi, a power outlet for my wired charging mac  and areas for my wirelessly charging Nokia Lumia 920 :D

MNB WP_20130727_051Helsinki AirportAlso, on the instructions about wireless charging, you can get that wireless charging accessory for attachment on Micro-USB slots in case yours doesn’t charge wirelessly by default.

As I’m writing this a cute little Korean family walked up to the table intrigued about the wirelessly charging Lumia. The kids are well annoyed that their Galaxy Note (what’s a 6 year old doing with a note? – actually the older kid, about 8, also has a Note :/) won’t charge wirelessly.

Video: Lumia 1020 At&t TV Advert

With the 1020 officially available it’s now up to Nokia and At&t to promote the hell out of it, and At&t’s first TV advert for it is a good start. The clips hows off the powers of lossless zoom, making every seat a front row seat thanks to the cropping; it could use a tiny bit more context explaining that the zoom doesn’t affect the quality but oh well.

More Proof That the Lumia 1020 was Called the 909

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 03:23 AM PDT

svUdnjWWe previously saw some Lumia 1020 early prototypes calling themselves the “Nokia 909″ under the software information, well in case you needed any more proof when the 1020 is connected to a PC the default device name is “Nokia 909″. Honestly it’s not something very important, but it’s kind of interesting to me as a fan (sort of like the Lumia 800 calling itself “Searay” while updating); I like to think of them as little easter eggs for the loyalists.

Nokia Promises All major iOS and Android Apps Are Coming, Only Question is When

Posted: 27 Jul 2013 03:09 AM PDT

nokia-apps-hero-900x365-pngEngadget had a chance to sit down with Bryan Biniak, the general manager of app development at Nokia and asked the tough questions. Mainly when are we going to see the Android and iOS gap filled in WP? Bryan’s answer was interesting to say the least; where he mentioned that not a single major app developer they approached had said “no” instead all that matters is the “when” of the apps arrival to the platform.

We’re not having a single conversation with anybody, of any material application that’s out there, that isn’t going to be coming to the platform. It’s not a matter of if — I had those conversations, the “if” conversations, before — all of our conversations now are “when.”

Of course one of those major apps would have to be Instagram, which although the demand has been sated by the likes of instance metrogram and now even Oggl, it remains the most prominent app to hold out on the platform.

The other big name who is absent from WP would have to be Google, who for competitive reasons (under the pretence of there being no interest in WP) have barely released any apps at all (only Google search and the Youtube app with Microsoft), they’ve even abstained from creating a Google+ app (not that many people care :P ). When asked about Google’s stance towards developing for WP Bryan’s reply was:

They are doing themselves a disservice by not being on every screen.” He also used the big G as an example of a company that prefers web-based apps, whereas Nokia is pushing for native apps. “That will get resolved over time, but as consumer demand builds, they’re not going to have an option,” Biniak said. For clarity, we asked whether Google is actively discussing WP8 apps, to which Biniak replied, “yeah, absolutely.”

What I find most interesting about this, is the fact that once again it’s Nokia going the extra mile (or ten) to fill the WP app gap, while Microsoft does god knows what. (as far as I can think of, the new Halo is practically the only real big app Microsoft have created besides the social apps).
