PSA: Latest Whatsapp update Allows You to Navigate to a Contacts Location Via HERE Drive

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 02:29 PM PDT

Whatsapp

One previous irritation I had with whatsapp on Windows Phone 8 was the fact that sharing a location through it was next to useless in terms of navigation. The app would open up the location in a map view (I believe it might have been Bing maps still? Or just Nokia maps without any navigation options), with no reasonable way to navigate to the shared location. Instead you’d have to check out the street name (or nearby landmark) then search for that in HERE Maps/Drive and navigate to it.

Thankfully in the latest update the location is shared through the HERE maps  (sharing is through google maps, but locations navigation is through HERE) service meaning you can instantly navigate to it without having to manually launch the app (plus you have the option of choosing your mode of navigation- car/walking), or you can stick to listed directions (not turn by turn). wp_ss_20130726_0002 wp_ss_20130726_0003 wp_ss_20130726_0004wp_ss_20130726_0005

Nokia, A Historical Turnaround in the Works.

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 02:02 PM PDT

Nokia+logo,+Helsinki,+Finland+87570One issue anyone that’s been following the Nokia scene for a while now is sure to be familiar with is the horribly underpriced stock prices. Almost exactly a year ago (July 20th 2012) stocks reached an all time low of $1.70, a price so ridiculously low that the rumors of a buyout were coming from all directions, and they weren’t too far fetched. There are multiple reasons for the horribly low stock prices, some of them obvious such as people “losing belief” and poor sales, on the other hand one constant factor over the past 2 or 3 years has been analysts constantly trashing Nokia’s stocks and underpricing them; calling out Nokia as a disaster waiting to happen.

Well as of today Nokia’s stocks have reached a healthy $4.05, carried by a fair bit of upward trend since mid April (and for the first time in longer than I can remember Nokia’s stocks rose after a launch event rather than dipping; when the 1020 & 925 were announced). The more interesting thing for me personally is seeing signs of renewed belief from analysts and other non tech related sites in Nokia and the Lumia strategy, to be specific Insider Monkey’s latest article titled “Why Nokia Corporation  Is a Historical Turnaround in the Making“.

The article goes as far as calling out Nokia’s strategy as one for the books to teach from:

It may become an impressive case study, a must-read in all MBA programs: how a company once had it all, lost it by missing the smartphone revolution, but managed a turnaround in the end, after years of patient hard work.

Among the strengths listed to bolster confidence in Nokia’s strategy and future are, Nokia’s Lumia range outselling all of BlackBerry’s (BB10 & 7) sales last quarter, a promising outlook for Nokia Siemens (which Nokia recently bought out completely) and high quality feature phones (that compensate for their shrinkage in the feature phone market).

Most of all I found it interesting to finally see someone point out that the light at the end of Nokia’s tunnel isn’t as far away as it used to be (and is most definitely there); and it’s always nice to see someone sharing your belief in something you’re passionate about.

Lumiappdates: Transfer my data updated with SD card support

Transfer my Data is an exclusive lumia app to transfer your contacts data from phones like symbian, ios, etc to your lumia device at ease.

The latest update for the app now enables backing up your information onto an SD card (rather than transferring over bluetooth), technically this should also mean that you can restore the contacts/messages from your own device back onto it after a hard reset (provided the device has a Micro SD card of course).

Grab the update from the store at the link below:

http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/transfer-my-data/dc08943b-7b3d-4ee5-aa3c-30f1a826af02

Scan with Windows Phone

Transfer my Data is a quick and easy way of copying contacts from almost any phone (Symbian, Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and others) to your new Windows Phone using Bluetooth. Some phones may also be capable of transferring text messages and pictures, including many Nokia phones. Transfer my Data copies all your contacts into the Windows Phone People Hub, from where it's easy to call, mail, chat or follow friends on your favourite social network. On supported phones, contacts can also be exported to and imported from an SD card.

Changelog:
- Expanded compatibility for SD card import of contacts
- Usability, performance and localization improvements
- Bug fixes

Nokia & Scalado: A Very Fruitful Acquisition

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 10:50 AM PDT

Nokia

A lot of times we hear about a company purchasing another, making all sorts of buzz during the acquisition phase; then apparently do next to nothing with the company for the next 3 years or so. That’s definitely not the deal with Nokia’s purchase of Scalado’s imaging technologies last year, who within the short year of changing ownership have pushed out some incredible Lumia apps including:

  • PhotoBeamer
  • Creative Studio
  • Smart Shoot
  • Smart cam
  • pro cam
  • Glam me
  • and many more

Nokia Conversations have an article up about the history of Scalado and their relationship/acquistion by Nokia, so do check it out below:

How well has Scalado been integrated with Nokia?

I think this must be one of the most successful integrations. The evidence is that within months we had brought out some of the key experiences.

Why did the deal with Nokia make sense?

We were recognised as a leading and creative company with a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve, but often we didn't have the full means to do it.

Nokia Lumia 925 and Lumia 625 Hands-On/Launch Event in Sydney #Lumia925AU

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 08:08 AM PDT

IMG_3947Typically, I attend the Australian Nokia events, and last time I brought along my friend (and Symbian/MeeGo Dev) MJ (@MJJagpal) with me to photograph the 820/920 (as he is an awesome photographer). Anyway, seeing as I am travelling Europe, MJ attended the event solo. Here is what he had to say.

IMG_3953

Tonight was the Lumia 925 / Lumia 625 Launch event in Sydney hosted by Nokia. I was lucky enough to go to see what has been going on with this new launch for the Australian market. The Lumia 925 has been extensively covered and loved by people around the world, it was great to see it and play with it here in Australia.

IMG_3949

It was an interesting setup for the event with a space that was lit enough to create dramatic lighting effects and making you realize that it is all about the low light capabilities of the Lumia 925. The Lumia 625 was also on display along with JBL and Monster accessories. Nokia also brought out the "Here" car to the event and it was interesting to see passersby take photos of the car.

 IMG_3944

The differences in the Lumia 925 really stand out from the Lumia 920 as soon as you pick up the phone. The new slimmer, lighter profile and the mixture of Aluminum and Polycarbonate make the Lumia 925 feel premium while retaining solid build you get with the Lumia 920. Nokia has done a good job creating a range that will cater to the different tastes and requirements of the end users.

 IMG_3967

The Lumia 925 will come preloaded with the Amber update, giving you Data Sense, Smart Cam and Glance pre-installed. For Symbian and N9 users who wanted to have a "Sleeping Screen" this is now a standard inclusion. When charging Glance will show the profile icon along with the charging icon. Double tap to wake also works like a charm.

The Lumia 925 is available in retail outlets already! The RRP is $699 AUD. Telstra is expected to carry the phone on 30th July, 1st August for Optus. Vodafone will be launching very soon with an exclusive 32GB version. All colours are expected in Australia, availability will be dependent on carriers.

IMG_3982

The wireless charging shell will be available for $39.95 AUD RRP.

 IMG_3972

The Lumia 625 was also on display and is expected to hit the retail channels and carriers towards the end of August.

The 625 drops the wireless charging and NFC capabilities; however it brings along options of an SD Card and changeable back covers. The phone itself feels good in the hand and you can easily notice the larger screen along with slight loss of sharpness due to the lower resolution. Considering the price point it will hit, I think it is a good balancing act.

It is expected to be carried by Telstra, Optus Business and soon after by Virgin Mobile. The RRP for the Lumia 620 is $399 AUD.

Nokia Releases “YouTube Upload” App, Allows Sharing Videos From Library

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 06:45 AM PDT

YouTube Upload

One of the major nuisances I first faced with WP was the fact that most app couldn’t share videos recorded with the phone after they were saved. Meaning to upload to YouTube you had to open the youtube app, record the video then upload; far from the perfect solution, especially for those spontaneous moments. Once gain Nokia have swooped in to the rescue with the latest app “YouTube Upload” which does just that, uploads your videos to YouTube.

This app helps you to share your videos quickly and easily with your friends, and works for all videos shot on Nokia Lumia phones with Windows Phone 8. Simply select the video in the Photos app and share, or upload after capturing and trimming with the Nokia Video Trimmer through share option. Share your video over Wi-Fi or a mobile data connection, but be sure to check your network operator's data charges first.

At the moment it seems this app is only available for the Lumia 1020, but there doesn’t seem to be any reason for it not to come to the rest of the Lumia family (since Wvga is listed as a supported resolution as well).

If you’re lucky enough to have a 1020 at the moment go ahead and grab the app from the link below:

Alleged Nokia Phablet Screen Leaks, Packs a Whopping 6 Inch screen and a Tiny Bezzel!

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 06:35 AM PDT

6cb26641jw1e6zbpq0ysmj20hs0np756

Bezzel haters rejoice! If the image above is correct then you’re lucky day is near. What we’re looking at is apparently Nokia’s very first Phablet, packing a whopping 6 inch screen and an extremely thin bezzel! Also visible is a slot for a front facing camera (hopefully 1080p) and not much more besides that. Of course GDR3 is said to bring 1080p resolution support for WP8, which would look absolutely grand on such a large screen; if only WP8 gave some sort of optimization for larger screens (rather than just fitting more tiles in).

So what do you guys think? Is it real? And more importantly do we like it?

Achievement unlocked: Jay Montano becomes a Nokia Most Valued Connectors judge

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 03:37 AM PDT

Achievement-Unlocked (1)

NC_MVC_JUDGE

I bet after years of good work by Jay Montano, Nokia just can’t thank him properly anymore.

This is why when an award for the Most Valued Connector was going to be presented to some lucky fella , Nokia choose Jay Montano, Mark GuimJenifer Hanen,Clinton Jeff and Jason Goh  to actually be the judges on who deserves the  award.

Nokiaconnects

So whats MVC exactly ?  as Nokia connects puts it

Liking and sharing all of this[videos/pictures and fan submissions]  isn't enough though. We want people who are doing amazing things with Nokia to be recognized and appreciated as our Most Valued Connectors (MVCs). We'll be picking an MVC every month starting from today, and to show our love for them we'll be taking them on amazing and bespoke experiences… made by Nokia just for you!

The MVC award will be monthly and will be judged by the amazing 5 team and I just know Its going to be a hard job for the team to pick just one person for the award because if the experience Jay is having in Finland today is anything to go by , the title will be worthwhile.

for the full article about the MVC awards click here.

Have fun out there Jay, be sure to hit us with updates.

Why would you want the Lumia 1020 camera grip ? Hint: its not just the battery.

MNB IMG_0314battery grip nokia lumia 1020

First off you should know I’m in love with mobile photography , those of you who follow me on twitter will quite notice , and part of being a fan of Nokia is the sheer amount of technical information Nokia and its blogs publish.

I basically attribute any good picture I take to MyNokiaBlog and then Nokia.  This is why I was glad to join MNB’s team as a thank you in return.
How it all started…

When I took my first decent picture using a Nokia N73 I was immediately in love with photography , as the years passed by I became spoiled and started picking up every Camera oriented Nokia phone (sadly I skipped the N95 for financial reasons).

A flower-n73

OIS was years away and a good picture demanded a steady phone, this is why I loved every Nokia that stood on its own ,  and this is why I slightly hated the 808.

Phonesstanding

Now the Lumia 1020 can indeed stand on its own despite the huge sensor !

But Landscape photography will prove difficult , ( I noticed that most of my good pics are taken in portrait!. )

Nokia+Lumia+1020+official+photos+14[1]
By now you must be wondering why a phone with second generation  OIS  might need to be steadied or mounted ? Answer  : longer shutter times and better low light marvels and camera apps that uses motion.

You can set the ISO to 100 basically killing noise off , while prolonging shutter time to get crisp and clear photos at night. much like this photo I took with my Lumia 920.
You see that HUGE grip doesn’t just give people the prospective of a good camera  , It actually lets the phone stand  to take great portrait pictures and helps it stand on its side for great Landscape goodness.

The apps which will benefit from the grip are many :

Nokia Pro cam  ,  Nokia Smart Cam , Burton lens , Cinemagraph , Refocus , Proshot , HDR photo camera, Panorama , photosynth , Ready click and the voice controlled camera apps.

It’s a grip that lets you Skype hands free, your father could use it comfortably to take a family picture using voice commands, you can use it to take great pictures at the restaurant you just checked in via Foursquare , If your friends are into action shots any  flat object could be your mount.

Nokia_Lumia_1020_Camera_Grip[1]

Add the 50% increase in battery life and the comfort of a big shutter button , then sprinkle the universal mount  and I’ll gladly shell out the 80$ for it , this is why I won’t buy my Lumia 1020 unless I have that sweet grip to match it.

This article can be a little silly and borders fan boyism,  I know but its only until you read the following quote that you’d begin to understand how cool this thing is in COMPARISON.

The Zoom adopts the GS4′s plasticky design, so right off the bat it doesn’t feel like a premium device. It’s significantly thicker than any current smartphone, and even most point-and-shoot cameras. Still, it fits in a jeans pocket, and it’s comfortable to hold both as a phone and as a camera. Curiously, every side of the device is slightly curved, so it’s impossible to stand the camera up on its own. You can mount it on a tripod, of course, but if you don’t have one around and need to do some hands-free shooting, you’re out of luck.
