#Recap! #ZoomReinvented And the Peeps at Nokia’s NYC event Posted: 23 Jul 2013 04:30 PM PDT Here’s an image recap featuring the peeps we saw at NYC for the #ZoomReinvented event! These were some of the most awesome folks ever, and half of the excitement at these events as well as the new device launch, is getting to meet and talk with them. I’m terrible with names. Feel free to help me name that Nokian. Getting to the hotel. Going to evening get together, near Times Square Posh inside!
MyNokiaBlog tag Event…waiting outside Ooh, saw this on CJ’s album after looking for a different photo. It’s the keynote area After the keynote, rushing to the demo section
There was a blogger session at 4 to see Juha and Eero talk about the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the camera innovations inside. Zoom party predrinks

Nokia Lumia 1020 show floor tour #ZoomReinvented – 925 OIS test Posted: 23 Jul 2013 04:08 PM PDT
After it quietened down a bit, I thought I’d record a video to show you guys the setup Nokia had at the demo floor. It’s something that I rarely see given that we only ever usually just take a look at the device and immediate surroundings. This place was also used later for the Nokia ZoomParty. The video is recorded by the Nokia Lumia 925, just handheld. The OIS and Audio are pretty awesome no? The original file looks even better.

Quite a few inside linkbacks to this post, but another reason to point out is that Stephen Elop replied to one of our commenters through email regarding the ‘issue’ some seem to have with perceived ‘noise’ on the Nokia Lumia 1020 vs the Nokia 808 PureView in certain situations. Whilst there isn’t yet a comprehensive camera comparison between the two, we shall just have to take the words of those who have some experience with these devices. Furthermore, to calm the waters, I think we ought to celebrate the best cameraphones being Nokias. Right now, Nokia Lumia 1020 is competing against the iPhone and Galaxy S series. Not anything internal anymore like the N8 or 808, so whilst it’s great to inspect for progression, we should not forget that our flagship aims to battle the flagship of the competition. For example, how in this scenario, look how the Nokia Lumia 1020 demolishes an iPhone 5. Anyway, onto Stephen Elop’s email. He’s famous for getting back to people to email him.
Parameters fully tunable in future software updates. Those currently complaining that there’s no sharpness control or some other controls missing, perhaps that will appear in future software updates. Cheers Taras for sharing the email and to Mystp for the tip! |
Nokia Lumia 1020 unboxing – box contents AT&T Posted: 23 Jul 2013 08:28 AM PDT I was looking in my mail for an eBay notification of some items I was expecting today and came across this tip that I think got missed from last week. It’s a look inside the Nokia Lumia 1020 box. This is the box you get from AT&T and not the usual Nokia retail box (the regular blue sliding variety) This was found on eBay. Currently on sale for a whopping $1000. If you’re interested, here’s a hands on of the Nokia Lumia 1020, also a Black Nokia Lumia 1020 from AT&T.
Item location is in NYC, where the 1020 was launched. Just be warned about buying expensive goods from eBay.
Cheers bleh for the tip! |
The Unlikely Hero, Nokia 100 Helping the Blind Thanks to South African Mobility for the Blind Trust Posted: 23 Jul 2013 06:56 AM PDT On the other end of the spectrum opposite to the Lumia 1020 and 925 are Nokia’s simple S30 budget phones designed with a few simple tasks in mind, making phone calls, telling time, perhaps a radio, and a speaking clock. Something that has surprisingly made the Nokia 100 a great asset to the South African Mobility for the Blind Trust (SAMBT). The SAMBT help the blind in South Africa by providing them with walking canes, teaching them how to deal with currency and much more, the Nokia 100′s role came in when they were looking for a suitable talking watch to help the visually impaired:
The Nokia 100 is priced at the approximate equivalent of $15 (or less), making it entirely affordable and serving up such a simple function to help those in need, read more about SAMBT’s efforts and their usage of the Nokia 100 at the source link below. Thanks for the tip Dion.

How it’s done: Smartphone Rig – comparing Nokia Lumia 928 with iPhone, SGSIV etc Posted: 23 Jul 2013 05:53 AM PDT Here’s an interesting video on how microsoft went about comparing the Nokia Lumia 928 against the competition’s camera. They made a rig so that the phones are pretty much in a similar position and made sure that the cameras are pressed at the same time. Hopefully, when taking photos with flash or focus assist light, they aren’t firing at the same time as light coming from one source may affect another camera (either negatively or positively, either way it’s not a fair test).
Interestingly, MS says the shots were so convincing from their comparison that they used them in their current campaign. Unfortunately, they didn’t pick the one that really showed off the 928 the best. This is what they chose They had better samples like this. You know, where there isn’t any neon lights which some might want to show up more clearly in a darker pic. Also, the Nokia Lumia 928 has a freaking XENON Flash. XENON Flash. XENON Flash. Do I need to repeat it one more time? XENON Flash. The Nokia Lumia 928 would have been amazing at both low light without flash and possibly low light WITH flash, freezing the moment like the N82, N8, 808 and most recently the Nokia Lumia 1020. |

The Nokia Lumia 1020, launched in July 11th 2013 was already sent to AT&T stores as the demo device by July 17th.
When sample pics appeared on Reddit, we followed that story and shared those pics here.
Nokia clearly liked them because they retweeted it. See the screenshot above. Note the date, July 21st. By the time Nokia had retweeted it, picture links to the original files were already removed. The only things that remained were screenshots. A few days ago we were contacted by the original poster and his AT&T superior to remove those picture links (redirecting to flickr/imgur) so we did. It seems they uploaded anonymously to imgur so the photos are kinda stuck online if you still have the links. :/ We mentioned that briefly in this post, another set of images taken by a regular average person. What’s happening now? Looking at Reddit, it seems that it hasn’t ended well as the original poster of the first batch of pictures, ‘goldegl’ seems to have lost his job from AT&T. It is sad and unfortunate but we are told in this link below he is handling that relatively well and has more work lined up.
I’m sure I read from the original first post on reddit (the username is deleted now so I can’t see the comment) that he would ask his superiors if it was OK to check the device out first? It seems it’s AT&T’s policy on NDAs – non disclosure agreements. Folks are allowed to know and see things in advance but can’t disclose anything or face the consequences they agreed to. We know of Nokia folks who have ‘leaked’ things prior to launch and have since been ‘let go’ for breaching NDA.
But given that the 1020 is already launched and the devices are already shipping and the demo unit likely already has the latest firmware which the shipped devices have, does the NDA still stand? I mean, just today our own Deaconclgi got an early hands on of the Nokia Lumia 1020 at a AT&T store. That’s a cool thing to do, AT&T folks. Don’t penalise peeps for that. The darn device is already launched!
We were already sharing sample pics from the Nokia Lumia 1020 on the day of launch! This one was from Nokia’s own Chris Weber’s 1020. Admittedly, I didn’t say it was a sample. As the comment here below from Reddit mentions, goldegi was really keen on the Nokia Lumia 1020. He was one of the few that would actually push a Windows Phone device and in particular this Nokia Lumia 1020! The last thing AT&T needs with their record of ‘success’ with WP is to lose folks that actually know something and would be willing to sell Nokia WPs. Remember on launch day for the Nokia Lumia 1020 how Forbes’ Joan Lappin demolished AT&T as a Nokia/WP partner? AT&T was said to be a dreadful partner. Sales people apparently knew nothing about it and if you asked about it, they didn’t really promote it. How is Nokia/AT&T/MS gonna make sure that they aren’t gonna let this fantastic device avoid the same crummy treatment? Make sure you have guys like goldegi on board who love your device and will push it. Don’t get rid of them.
What’s the right thing to do here, eh, AT&T, Nokia, Microsoft? I’m not saying not to respect NDAs. Perhaps if the Nokia Lumia 1020 wasn’t announced officially announced yet and someone leaked info on it. Then perhaps that would be a call to have some talks. Eh, Mr Belfiore?:) But it’s not like Redditor, goldegi leaked anything. The handset was already announced. The handset was already in the store for demoing. The device had already gone to pre-order (16th, the post was on the 17th)… I don’t really know the intricacies of NDAs. Perhaps someone can help out goldegi if he’s still interested in returning to AT&T? |
Posted: 23 Jul 2013 04:48 AM PDT Over at Windows Phone user voice (where folks can submit ideas to MS for WP) Joe Belfiore was noted to have responded to the 4101 voted suggestion that Microsoft needs to listen to their fans’ ideas and DO something. http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-suggestions/suggestions/4215803-we-need-microsoft-to-listen-to-our-ideas-and-do-so (Via: winphoneviet, WMPU) This time, WP has a shut up and ship policy. When it’s ready we’ll get the update soon without all the awkward waiting, and all that time for other companies to steal things as their own. There’s also the unforeseen delay with some of the problems MS is supposedly having with the Qchips. We get frustrated because it really does ‘feel’ like MS isn’t doing anything at all. Belfiore says they’re listening and that after GDR2, later in the year we should expect more updates and more after that. Belfiore responds:
Imagine the pace that WP would grow WITHOUT Nokia’s input. :/ |
Comparisons: Nokia Lumia 625, Lumia 720, Lumia 620, Lumia 520 Posted: 23 Jul 2013 04:19 AM PDT Continuing Nokia’s efforts of having some of the best entry level smartphones ever, the Nokia Lumia 625 with its gigantic 4.7″ screen looks positively beastly against his brothers, the Nokia Lumia 720, 620 and 520. Check out below, both devices are in the same 62x close family but the difference, crickey! It’s like wittle Mario after eating a red mushroom. Despite having a large screen, it’s slimmer than the 620, and 520. Possibly by having that larger footprint to space out components, whilst accommodating the larger battery.
The 720 and 625 are quite similar in height but the 625 utilises the space better. A view of the homescreen doesn’t help the 720 here because it makes it look like the screen is smaller what with those black edges around the tiles, as well as no notification pop up at the top of the 720 to define the top edge of the screen. Hands on video time with the new Nokia Lumia 625, the biggest screened Nokia device to date (not counting the Nokia Booklet 3G or them Nokia TVs of the past)
